SCDJJ Juvenile Detention Complex Inmate Search
Laurens County Inmate Search: Tracking Down Someone on Templeton Road
Whichever agency makes an arrest in Laurens County, adults are jailed at the Johnson Detention Center, 154 Templeton Road, Laurens, SC 29360. It is the Sheriff's Office's lone jail, reached at 864-683-4055. Read on for search tips, bond, video visits, postcards, deposits, warrants, hearing dates and a roster of local police departments.
Open the Sheriff's official inmate lookup; a surname alone is enough, and shorter searches forgive spelling slips. Fresh arrivals can lag behind on that list for a few hours, so try again later. Anyone released minutes ago, or transferred to another lockup, may vanish from it.
To confirm charges, bond and a first court date, dial Booking at 864-683-4783. Release steps are on our release and bond page; the case itself is on our criminal court page.
1. Laurens County jail roster: how do I search it well?
The Sheriff's site links to the Johnson Detention Center lookup. Five quick moves:
- Open the Sheriff's jail search.
- Start with the surname alone, then add a first name to thin out a long list.
- Compare age or birth year on each match, because shared names are common in a county this size.
- Jot down any booking number shown. Staff and deposit services ask for it.
- Still no luck? Phone Booking, 864-683-4783.
Under S.C. Code 30-4-30(D)(3), jail rosters count as public records, so jail staff may confirm whether someone is in custody.
↑ Back to the question list2. Name missing from the Templeton Road list?
Common explanations:
- Intake isn't finished. Fingerprinting and the booking photo come before the name is posted.
- Spelling differences. Search a second last name, a nickname's real form, or the name without a hyphen.
- Already out. Under S.C. Code 22-5-510(B), bond is heard within 24 hours, so plenty of people leave fast.
- Held somewhere else. Officers from Clinton or Laurens may still be processing the arrest, or another county, the U.S. Marshals or a juvenile center may have the person.

↑ Back to the question list3. Johnson Detention Center or another jail: where could they be?
The county keeps one jail: the Johnson Detention Center, 154 Templeton Road, Laurens, SC 29360, 864-683-4055. Its Detention Services Division calls it a place of pretrial confinement, so most people inside are awaiting court. The Sheriff names no annex, work camp or second building for it. SCDC inspectors visit every South Carolina jail at least yearly (S.C. Code 24-9-10).
Someone arrested on another county's paperwork could sit in that county's jail instead. Jails close to Laurens County:
- Greenville County Detention Center, 20 McGee Street, Greenville, SC 29601, 864-467-2309
- Spartanburg County Detention Center, 950 California Avenue, Spartanburg, SC 29303, 864-596-2607
- Union County Detention Center, 1657 Jonesville Highway, Union, SC 29379, 864-429-2818
- Newberry County Detention Center, 3239 Louis Rich Drive, Newberry, SC 29108, 803-321-2141
- Greenwood County Detention Center, 528 Edgefield Street, Greenwood, SC 29646, 864-943-8059
Detained teens usually go to DJJ's Juvenile Detention Complex in Columbia, not Templeton Road.
↑ Back to the question list4. Will a mugshot show up in the jail lookup?
Sometimes a booking photo appears beside a listing, and sometimes it doesn't. For a copy, ask the Sheriff's front desk at 864-984-4967 to connect you with Records. Open records requests generally get an answer in ten business days (S.C. Code 30-4-30(C)).
- Some private websites post booking photos. Was the charge dropped, expunged under South Carolina law, or tried to an acquittal? Then mail the site a certified request. The operator must pull the photo inside 30 days and may not bill you for it (S.C. Code 17-1-60).
- Booking photos from immigration arrests: file through ICE's FOIA request page.
- Federal mugshots mostly stay unreleased. The U.S. Marshals sometimes share one, such as when searching for a fugitive.
5. Release or transfer texts: does South Carolina VINE send them?
Yes, and it's free. South Carolina VINE reports custody status plus the holding facility, then calls, texts or emails you after a release or transfer.
- Register online through VINELink South Carolina.
- Prefer the phone? 866-727-2846 works in English and Spanish, searching by name or offender number.
Victims are owed word of a release on request (S.C. Code 16-3-1530). When minutes matter, call the jail too.
↑ Back to the question list6. Bond after a Laurens County arrest: how does it work?
Bond must be heard within 24 hours (S.C. Code 22-5-510(B)). On weekends and county holidays the Sheriff's Office lists bond court at 9 a.m.; on weekdays, Booking at 864-683-4783 can give that day's time.
- Bail is a right for most defendants. Capital crimes, life-sentence crimes and crimes on the violent list can be held without it (S.C. Const. art. I, § 15).
- Judges choose among a signed promise, cash, a surety bondsman, a court-approved 10 percent deposit and GPS tracking.
- Murder and other death-or-life cases need a circuit judge for bond.
- After payment, the jail gets as long as four hours to release.
Our bail page covers fees, refunds and bondsman rules.
↑ Back to the question list7. Which crimes were charged, and what class are they?
Booking, 864-683-4783, can read each charge and its bond. The warrant also names the crime and the law it falls under.
A charge's class sets its ceiling (S.C. Code 16-1-20). Felony classes span A (30-year cap) through F (5-year cap). Misdemeanor classes span A (3-year cap) through C (1-year cap). Crimes punishable by under a year stay unclassified.

↑ Back to the question list8. Who represents someone jailed without money for a lawyer?
South Carolina appoints counsel for anyone financially unable to hire one (S.C. Code 17-3-10). The applicant swears to their finances in an affidavit and owes $40, though the clerk may lower or drop that fee (S.C. Code 17-3-30).
- Public Defender, Eighth Circuit, Hillcrest Square office: 100 Hillcrest Square, Laurens, SC 29360, 864-984-8807.

↑ Back to the question list9. When and how can I video-visit at Johnson Detention Center?
Visiting here happens on screens. Connect from a phone or computer at home, or use a video kiosk inside the Detention Center, 154 Templeton Road, Laurens, SC 29360.
- Hours: 8:00 to 10:30 a.m. and 1:00 to 3:30 p.m.
- Schedule 24 hours or more in advance with the video visit company, at 877-570-4268, or through its app or website.
- Your slot must match the person's rec time.
- Disciplinary status blocks visits.

Visitation office: 864-683-4785. Our visiting guide offers general advice.
↑ Back to the question list10. Kiosk or money order: how do I add funds?
Two deposit routes, per the Sheriff's Office:
- The lobby kiosk at the Detention Center, 154 Templeton Road, Laurens, SC 29360.
- A money order written to the person by name.
Canteen orders, the jail's store, arrive Mondays and Thursdays; canteen questions go to 912-427-9022. Before mailing a money order, ask the jail at 864-683-4055 where to send it. More help: our inmate deposits page and our canteen and commissary page.
↑ Back to the question list11. Can they phone home, and can I message them?
Jail phone systems generally let people dial out, while relatives can't ring in. Ask the Detention Center, 864-683-4055, which phone and message service Templeton Road uses and how families set up and prepay a calling account.
Video visits here are recorded, and jail calls usually are too, so steer clear of the case and the alleged victim. Our jail calls page and electronic messages page describe how such services typically run.
↑ Back to the question list12. Postcards only: how do I write to a Laurens County inmate?
The jail takes postcards and nothing else; envelopes and packages get returned. Address it this way:
The person's full name
Laurens County Detention Center
PO Box 329, Laurens, SC 29360
- Include your name and return address.
- Keep it simple, and leave the charges out of it.
- Lawyers sending legal papers should check the method with the jail at 864-683-4055.
Our jail mail page has more pointers.
↑ Back to the question list13. Who can collect clothes and personal items?
Clothing and belongings taken at intake are stored by the jail. Phone 864-683-4055 to learn the release process, whether a relative may pick things up, and which ID to carry. The building is at 154 Templeton Road, Laurens, SC 29360.
On release, property usually leaves with its owner. If the person heads to state prison instead, ask staff what becomes of anything left behind.
↑ Back to the question list14. Illness or injury behind bars: what can family do?
State law makes the county responsible for basic needs in its jail, medical access included (S.C. Code 24-5-80). If the person has a condition or takes a prescription, tell the Detention Center at 864-683-4055 and ask how medical staff can receive that information.
In a family crisis, ask staff how to relay word to the person. Concerns about treatment or conditions can go to the Sheriff's Office front desk, 864-984-4967.
↑ Back to the question list15. Open warrant in Laurens County: who can confirm it?
Throughout the county, Sheriff's deputies serve warrants; in town, Laurens and Clinton police handle theirs. Ask about a warrant through the Sheriff's front desk, 864-984-4967. General Sessions warrants are filed with the Clerk of Court. For probation absconders, PPP keeps South Carolina PPP's Most Wanted Offenders; the U.S. Marshals 15 Most Wanted names federal runaways nationwide. Anyone named should talk to a lawyer first, then turn up voluntarily at the Hillcrest Square clerk or whichever magistrate signed it. Clerk of Court: 100 Hillcrest Square, Suite B, Laurens, SC 29360, 864-984-3538.
↑ Back to the question list16. Next court date: which office holds it?
The court with the case has the date:
- General Sessions or Family Court: Clerk of Court, 864-984-3538.
- Magistrate Court: 864-681-5689, open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays.
- Clinton tickets and arrests: Clinton Municipal Court, 211 North Broad Street, Clinton, SC 29325.
- Gray Court tickets and arrests: Gray Court Town Hall, 329 West Main Street, Gray Court, SC 29645.
Skipping court brings a bench warrant and may be charged as a separate crime (S.C. Code 17-15-90). Hearings, pleas and trial steps are mapped out stage by stage on our court guide.
↑ Back to the question list17. U.S. charges: where do the Marshals keep them?
Federal charges from here land in the Greenville Division of the U.S. District Court, 250 East North Street, Greenville, SC 29601 (Carroll A. Campbell, Jr. U.S. Courthouse), 864-241-2700.
- Detention is decided at the opening federal appearance (18 U.S.C. 3142).
