Throughout South Carolina many of the counties, including Richland County, use the state facility for their juvenile offenders. With a top capacity of 72, the facility accepts youth who have been charged with delinquent acts and who are waiting for a detention hearing, adjudication, or transfer. All care and responsibility for the residents relies upon the staff, and they will observe the youth through cameras for security, interact with them to support positive social interactions and keep them on the strictly scheduled routine that is in place, healthy meals are provided along with snacks, and a medical staff care for all medical needs both ongoing and illness or injury as they occur. Mental health professionals provide counseling in both group and private settings, and in some situations may provide family counseling to encourage reunification as well. Learning opportunities occur for life skills such as household management, selfcare, job searches, and more and social skills will develop and improve. The goals of juvenile detention are to provide rehabilitative services and provide tools for a successful future, providing support for learning improved decision making and managing anger or other emotions in a way that is beneficial to the individual. Mail is subject to search for the removal of any contraband. Phones: Phone calls to parents and guardians ease the anxiety of both families and juveniles, and support mental health and safety of the facility, so all juveniles are permitted phone privileges upon arrival and can access phones at least once each week, but most often each day. Incoming calls are not permitted. Visitation: Visiting hours are offered at least once each week, allowing parents, guardians, and even grandparents to visit the juveniles during their stay.
