Beadle County Inmate Search: Locating Someone Held in Huron

Arrests made by Huron police or sheriff's deputies end at the Beadle County Correction Center, 455 4th St SW, Suite 100, Huron, SD 57350. This 62-bed lockup, run by the Sheriff's Office, holds both men and women. Answers below start with confirming custody, then charges, visits, calls, mail, money, hearings and release.

Enter the person's name in the official inmate lookup to see if they are in custody. South Dakota's free notice service, SAVIN, can also alert you when their status changes. If a result looks wrong or comes up empty, phoning the jail clears it up.

Call the jail at 605-353-8424. Spell out the legal name and read off the birthdate. Then ask what the booking charges are and whether bond has been set. Our bail page handles bond and payment, and our court page handles hearings.

1. Step by step, how does the Beadle County lookup work?

The lookup is a statewide offender search. To use it:

  1. Tap the official inmate lookup link.
  2. Start with the surname; add a first name to trim a long list.
  3. Check the age or other details so you don't mix up two people.
  4. Note any number on the record. Jail staff find files faster with it.
  5. Register for a release notice on the same record if you would like one.

Still stuck? The jail and Sheriff's Office share one line, 605-353-8424.

2. What if the lookup shows no record?

Usual explanations:

  • Still at the booking desk. Intake paperwork can lag behind the arrest.
  • Name typed differently. Spelling slips happen. Re-run it with a nickname, middle name or prior surname.
  • Already out. In the Third Circuit, Class 2 misdemeanors are released on a signed promise, so stays can be brief.
  • Arrested in another county. That county's own jail usually takes the booking.
  • A minor. Youths are held in juvenile detention, outside the adult records.

A quick call to 605-353-8424 beats guessing. All 911 calls in the county go through the Huron Police Department's communications center, whose main number is 605-353-8550.

3. Is everyone from Beadle County held at the Huron jail?

Adults charged here nearly always stay at one site:

A person arrested across a county line is usually booked by that county. Jails in the region:

4. Are Beadle County mugshots available?

The state lookup exists to confirm custody and send release notices, not to display mugshots. To request a booking photo taken at the Huron jail, phone the Sheriff's Office at 605-353-8424 and ask what the process is.

  • ICE photos are requested on the agency's records request form.
  • Photos from federal arrests are kept private, unless the U.S. Marshals Service shares one while tracking down a person who fled.

5. Will SAVIN tell me when they get out?

It can. SAVIN, the Statewide Automated Victim Information and Notification service, is free and works around the clock. Any member of the public may register, not just victims.

Visit savin.sd.gov, look up the person, and register for notices. Nobody is signed up automatically, so complete it yourself.

The SAVIN help line, 844-299-4608, answers 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Central on weekdays. Juvenile cases sit outside SAVIN, so a parent of a held youth should phone the State's Attorney's Office at 605-353-8430.

6. What decides release from the Correction Center?

State law puts a signed promise to return, called personal recognizance, first in line, and money only after that (SDCL 23A-43-2, 23A-43-3). In practice here:

  • Class 2 misdemeanor arrests leave on that promise.
  • Felonies need a judge by phone. A few Class 1 misdemeanors need one too, with simple assault and stalking on that list. Judges take those calls from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.
  • Lots of amounts come straight off the state fine and bond schedule. A first or second DUI ranges from $225 to $1,000.
  • Domestic charges always go to a judge. Before the first court date, the accused can't reach the alleged victim or household at all, even by way of relatives.

Our bail page walks through amounts, paying and bondspersons.

7. Who can read me the charges, and who files them?

Jail staff at 605-353-8424 can tell you the booking charges. The prosecutor may add, drop or change them later.

Formal charges come from the State's Attorney's Office, 450 3rd St SW, Suite 108, Huron, SD 57350, 605-353-8430. Once filed, a case can be found here:

For a sense of the stakes, a Class 1 misdemeanor can mean a year in county jail. A Class 6 felony can mean two years in prison (SDCL 22-6-1, 22-6-2).

↑ Back to the question list

8. When is a court-appointed lawyer assigned?

It starts at the first appearance. The judge covers the right to counsel there, and someone who can't afford a lawyer should speak up and request one (SDCL 23A-40-6). The county foots the bill (SDCL 23A-40-8), but a judge can order repayment later (SDCL 23A-40-10).

Ways relatives can pitch in:

  • Remind the person, during a call, to ask the judge for a lawyer.
  • Collect pay stubs and bills, because the judge weighs money, credit and property.
  • Phone the Clerk of Courts at 605-353-7165 afterward to learn who was appointed.

A person facing only a Class 2 misdemeanor, out of jail and at no risk of jail time, isn't entitled to an appointed lawyer (SDCL 23A-40-6.1).

  • General population: Fridays and Sundays, 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.
  • Female and work-release inmates: Tuesdays, 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

  • One friend may visit an inmate per session. A friend under 18 needs an adult along.
  • Family visits are open to parents, stepparents, parents-in-law, brothers, sisters, siblings-in-law, grandparents, children, stepchildren, aunts and uncles.
  • Sign up with the jailer before visiting.
  • Nobody on active probation or parole, and nobody jailed here in the past year, may visit.

Lock phones, pagers, food, drinks, tobacco, lighters, matches and weapons in your vehicle. Expect a pat search and an ID check. Staff can end a visit for intoxication or for children who disrupt others. More tips are on our visitation page, and questions go to 605-353-8424.

11. What should I ask before depositing money?

Deposit methods, limits and fees can change, so call 605-353-8424 before sending a dollar. Ask which options work right now.

  • Know the person's full name and any jail number before you pay.
  • Cash in an envelope can get lost, so never mail it.
  • Hang on to deposit receipts until release day.

General deposit tips are on our money page, and store purchases are on our commissary page.

↑ Back to the question list

12. What are the jail's phone call rules?

Phones are open to inmates from 8 a.m. until 10 p.m. daily. How calls work:

  • Every outgoing call is collect. You pay to accept it, and you may decline.
  • Calling cards come from the Sheriff's Office in $10 amounts, each worth 20 minutes.
  • To stop calls to your phone, request a block through the Sheriff's Office.

In a domestic case, don't pass along any word to the alleged victim. Until the first court date, contact through a third person is a Class 1 misdemeanor (SDCL 25-10-43). Questions about texts, email or tablets go to 605-353-8424. Our phone page and messaging page add general advice.

↑ Back to the question list

13. What should I check before mailing a letter?

Phone 605-353-8424 first. Confirm the address format to use, whether an inmate number belongs under the name, and what may be enclosed. For reference, the jail's street address is 455 4th St SW, Suite 100, Huron, SD 57350.

  • Address it to the person's full legal name.
  • Put a return address, with your name, on the envelope.
  • Cash never goes in a letter.

Our mail page covers books, photos and legal mail in general terms.

14. How is property returned after release?

Clothing and other items collected at booking are held by the jail. Before coming to pick anything up, or to drop off clothes for release day, call 605-353-8424. Ask about pickup times and whether the person has to sign something authorizing you.

Carry a photo ID. If a prison transfer is coming, ask staff what happens to items left behind.

↑ Back to the question list

15. Who do I tell about an inmate's health needs?

Phone the jail at 605-353-8424 and describe the health issue, prescriptions or allergies. Ask how the jail handles medical concerns. South Dakota law addresses medical care for county prisoners and the use of their health insurance (SDCL 24-11-21, 24-11-21.1).

  • Check before bringing any medicine to the jail.
  • Keep the doctor's and pharmacy's names handy.
  • The jail offers mental health services and drug counseling.

Any risk of self-harm calls for an immediate phone call. Say it plainly.

16. Does someone have a Beadle County warrant?

Deputies with the Sheriff's Office, 455 4th St SW, Suite 100, Huron, SD 57350, 605-353-8424, serve warrants countywide. City officers at the Huron Police Department, 239 Wisconsin Avenue SW, Huron, SD 57350, 605-353-8550, serve them in town. Online, check the State's Attorney's Most Wanted list, the DOC escape and walkaway list, the state Sex Offender Registry, and UJS ePayments, which marks cases with active warrants. To settle a bench warrant, a lawyer can contact the Clerk of Courts, 450 3rd Street SW, Suite 204, Huron, SD 57350, 605-353-7165, and set up a surrender.

↑ Back to the question list

17. How can I track upcoming hearings?

South Dakota's free Find a Court Date site lets you type a name or case number and see what hearings are coming. A daily county calendar can be pulled up there too.

By phone, the Clerk of Courts, 450 3rd Street SW, Suite 204, Huron, SD 57350, 605-353-7165, answers from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays. That building hosts the county's state court hearings. A skipped hearing forfeits bail and can lead to a fresh charge (SDCL 23A-43-31).

For hearing-by-hearing detail, open our court page.

18. After a federal arrest, who decides where they wait?

Federal cases from the county go to Sioux Falls, to the United States Courthouse, 400 S. Phillips Ave., Room 128, Sioux Falls, SD 57104, 605-330-6600.

  1. Release is weighed at a detention hearing, normally part of the first federal appearance (18 U.S.C. 3142).

19. Where does ICE take people from this jail?

The path from county jail to immigration custody usually looks like this:

  1. Immigration officers deliver Form I-247A, the detainer, to the Correction Center.
  2. Staff are asked to hold the person up to 48 hours after they would otherwise be released (8 CFR 287.7(d)).
  3. ICE then picks the person up. South Dakota belongs to the St. Paul Field Office, 1 Federal Drive, Suite 1601, Fort Snelling, MN 55111, 612-843-8600.
  4. Detainees may be kept at a jail on ICE's facility list, like the Pennington County Jail, 307 Saint Joseph St, Rapid City, SD 57701, 605-394-6116.
  5. The ICE Online Detainee Locator shows where they are.

South Dakota's SB 7 (SL 2025, ch 100) became law in 2025. It stops local governments from blocking the flow of immigration status details to federal officials.

20. Which locator finds someone serving state prison time?

When a felony ends in a prison sentence, custody shifts from the county to the South Dakota Department of Corrections. Intake comes first, followed by placement at a prison matched to the person's needs and risk.

The DOC locator lists state-sentenced people only, so someone still in a county jail or on probation won't appear in it.

↑ Back to the question list

21. Where do Beadle County youths go after an arrest?

A held youth under 18 stays at a juvenile center, apart from adults. The circuit court hears delinquency cases against children from age 10 (SDCL 26-8C-2). A parent usually takes the child home. Detention needs an intake officer's decision, based on one of the grounds in SDCL 26-8C-3.

Detained youths stay in the county's juvenile detention center, inside the Correction Center building at 455 4th Street SW, Huron, SD 57350, 605-353-8424. Parents can call to ask about visits and the first hearing. The adult lookup leaves juvenile records out.

↑ Back to the question list

22. Which police agency booked them, and what's its number?

Most arrests in the county come from two local agencies, and both take people to the Correction Center:

  • Huron Police Department, 239 Wisconsin Avenue SW, Huron, SD 57350, 605-353-8550. Officers patrol the city, and the department runs the county's 911 center.
  • Sheriff's Office, 455 4th St SW, Suite 100, Huron, SD 57350, 605-353-8424. Deputies cover all other towns and rural areas, such as:

    • Hitchcock and Lake Byron
  • South Dakota Highway Patrol, District One, P.O. Box 1797, Aberdeen, SD 57402, 605-626-2286. Troopers from this district cover Huron and the area around it.
