Booking After an Armstrong County Arrest

An arrest in Armstrong County starts with a drive out of the county. Because the county's prisoners now stay in the Carson County Jail, intake happens in Panhandle under that jail's procedures. In general, booking works like this:

  1. Arrival and search. The deputy hands over the arrestee, and Carson County jailers do a search before anything else.
  2. Identity and record. Jailers take a booking photo and fingerprints and run a records check.
  3. Property. Cash, wallet, phone and clothing go on an inventory sheet and into storage.
  4. Medical questions. Staff ask about medical needs, medication and mental health.
  5. Magistrate. Under the Armstrong County and Potter County courts' indigent defense plan, an arrestee must see a magistrate within 48 hours. At that hearing the charges and rights are read, the arrestee may ask for appointed counsel, and bond is set.
  6. Release, or a bed until court. The person leaves once bail is posted or a personal bond is approved, or is assigned housing until court.

For booking status, charges or the bond figure, call the Carson County Jail at 806-537-3511.

Is anyone booked in Claude?

Not under current practice: the Sheriff lists Carson County as the place all of its inmates are kept. If you suspect a different jail, 806-553-6933 can check.

Can I bring medication for the person?

Never drop off pills unannounced. Phone 806-537-3511 first, because jail medical staff control every dose a prisoner gets.

Who decides on a court-appointed lawyer?

Ask for one at magistration. Under the Armstrong County–Potter County courts' plan on file at the Texas Indigent Defense Commission, a lawyer must be named within three working days after the paperwork arrives.

How do I get property released to family?

Property stays with the jail that booked the person. Booking property for an Armstrong County prisoner stays with the person at Carson’s jail, 201 US Highway 60, Panhandle (806-537-3511).
