Freestone County Inmate Search: Who Is Held on Keechi Street

Nearly every arrest in this county ends at the Freestone County Jail, 103 S. Keechi, Fairfield, TX 75840. The Sheriff runs it, and the state lists room for 44. When those beds fill, Freestone has shipped some people to jails in other counties. Below you'll find the lookup steps, then photos, charges, lawyers, visits, letters, deposits and court.

The state's free IVSS-Counties site at ivss-counties.tdcj.texas.gov shows who a Texas county jail is holding, and part of a name is enough. We also keep an inmate search link for this jail. Someone booked within the hour can lag behind on the site, so a blank screen is a cue to phone Keechi Street.

Reach Booking on Keechi Street at 903-389-3236. Booking wants the legal name and birth date. Ask Keechi Street staff for each charge, the bail on it and the first court day. For release, see our bail rundown; for the case itself, see our Freestone court guide.

1. Steps to look up someone in the Keechi Street jail

Freestone does not run its own roster site. It feeds the statewide IVSS-Counties system instead. To check on someone:

  1. Open ivss-counties.tdcj.texas.gov on a laptop or phone.
  2. Type the surname into the first box and the given name into the second. Leave off letters you aren't sure of.
  3. Scan the matches for Freestone and the right age, then click that record.
  4. Write down the booking facts and custody status on the screen.
  5. Pick the option to register for alerts if you'd like to hear about a transfer or release.

The state site is meant for custody status and notices. It may not show bond amounts or visiting rules, so the jail at 903-389-3236 is the place to ask. Our jail search link is one more spot to try.

2. Name not showing up? Common causes

An empty search does not prove your person went home. The usual culprits:

  • Booking unfinished. Keechi Street prints, photographs and processes each arrestee before the record posts.
  • Spelling mix-ups. Shorten the name to three or four starting letters. A nickname, or a surname used before marriage, may also match.
  • Released fast. A bond posted at the magistrate stage can take the name off the list within hours.
  • Housed out of county. Freestone has sent overflow inmates to other jails.
  • Held by someone else. TDCJ, federal and ICE custody each have a separate lookup, covered further down.

One call clears up most of this. Ring the Keechi Street jail at 903-389-3236. For records in writing, email the Sheriff's open records address, fcsorecords@co.freestone.tx.us.

3. Freestone County jail and out-of-county housing

The county has one adult lockup. The Freestone County Jail sits with the Sheriff's Office at 103 S. Keechi, Fairfield, TX 75840, phone 903-389-3236. The Sheriff's mail goes to P O Drawer 47, Fairfield, TX 75840.

Texas jail inspectors set its capacity at 44. On August 1, 2022, Freestone had 21 of its inmates boarded in other jails, and the report did not name them. If your person isn't on Keechi Street, the jail can name the host county and give you that jail's number.

Someone could also be in another county on that county's warrant, or held by federal or immigration officers. Those cases are under questions 17 and 18.

4. Freestone County mugshots and the Sheriff's photo file

Many people hunt for Freestone County mugshots right after an arrest. The state custody site is about status and alerts, and we can't say it shows pictures. For a booking photo, put your ask in writing to the Sheriff and cite the Public Information Act. Email works: fcsorecords@co.freestone.tx.us. Basic facts about an arrest are public in Texas, yet a photo may be held back in some cases (Gov't Code § 552.108).

Some private websites copy jail photos. Texas reins in sites that charge $150 or more for removal; see Business and Commerce Code ch. 109. If such a site's record is inaccurate or incomplete, it has to fix it or drop it for free. Expunged records, and ones sealed by nondisclosure, can't be posted by such sites.

ICE photos come only through a request on ICE's FOIA page. Federal booking pictures rarely go public; a Marshals wanted notice is the main exception. Texas shows its own top fugitives, with photos, in the Ten Most Wanted gallery from DPS.

5. Keechi Street release and transfer alerts

Sign up once and IVSS-Counties flags each booking, release or transfer for the person you follow, free. Court dates get flagged too, whether new or reset. It took over from VINE, so skip any old VINE link for Freestone.

Registrations are kept confidential from the inmate. If the case ends with a prison term, TDCJ's Victim Services Division takes over prison alerts at 800-848-4284.

6. Posting bond at the Fairfield jail

Texas gives the magistrate 48 hours to see a new arrestee. That short hearing covers rights, a free-lawyer request and bail. Three bond types exist: full cash, a bondsman's surety bond for a fee, or a no-cash personal bond signed as a promise. Certain violent charges rule that last type out.

A hold can keep someone in even after bail is paid. Examples are a warrant from another county, a parole blue warrant, an ICE detainer or a family violence hold of up to 4 hours. Phone Booking at 903-389-3236 to learn the figure and the payment window. Fuller detail sits on our county bond guide, while the Texas bail law overview lays out what applies statewide.

7. Looking up charges after a Freestone County arrest

The jail is the first stop. Booking at 903-389-3236 can often list each charge and its bail.

Once a case is filed, a clerk keeps the file:

  • Felony files: the District Clerk on the courthouse's top floor, 118 East Commerce Street, Fairfield, TX 75840, 903-389-2534.
  • Class A and B misdemeanor files: the County Clerk, 103 E Main, Fairfield, TX 75840, 903-389-2635.

After you sign up at no cost, re:SearchTX opens indictments, informations and judgments from across Texas. A felony often won't appear there until the grand jury has voted.

8. Court-paid lawyers for Keechi Street inmates

Asking for appointed counsel starts at the magistrate's hearing. The county then has 24 hours to route that ask to its appointing office. An appointment follows within a few working days (CCP arts. 15.17, 1.051).

Freestone's Indigent Defense Coordinator handles appointments from 118 E Commerce St., Room 205, Fairfield, TX 75840, phone 903-389-3335. Its email is court.assistant@co.freestone.tx.us. Adults fill out the adult affidavit of indigence. The state's chart shows no public defender office for this county, so judges pick private lawyers.

Relatives can phone the coordinator to learn if a lawyer has been picked. After that, the name shows in the court file too.

9. Visiting an inmate in Freestone County

Phone the jail at 903-389-3236 before any trip to Keechi Street. Ask which days visits run, how to book a slot, whether the screen is in the lobby or on your own device, and what ID and dress code apply.

State jail rules give each inmate a minimum. Keechi Street inmates get two noncontact visits a week as a floor, each at least 20 minutes, one on an evening or weekend. Minors generally visit only alongside a parent or guardian. A veteran in custody may get added visits from a veterans service officer for free.

More help is on our visiting guide.

10. Sending money to an inmate's account

Account money covers snacks, soap, stamps and phone time on Keechi Street. First, ask the jail at 903-389-3236 which deposit methods it accepts today. Ask too about the fees and any limit on amounts.

Stick to a method the jail tells you about, and never tuck cash in an envelope. See the deposits walkthrough and the commissary rundown for detail.

11. Phone calls and messages with someone in Freestone

Nobody can phone an inmate. All calls start inside, billed collect or drawn from a prepaid balance. State rules call for a phone in booking, so most people get a first call while they're being processed.

Ask the Keechi Street jail at 903-389-3236 how to open an account and whether messaging or tablets are offered. Expect calls to be recorded unless they're with a lawyer. Our jail calls guide and messaging guide have more.

12. Writing to an inmate at the Freestone jail

Put the inmate's legal name on line one, then "Freestone County Jail," P O Drawer 47, Fairfield, TX 75840. Always add your return address. Before sending photos or postcards, phone 903-389-3236 to check the rules.

Texas doesn't cap how many letters an inmate may write or receive. Officers check regular mail for anything banned. Attorney letters get opened with the inmate watching. Anything against jail rules may be sent back to you. Our guide to jail mail has more tips.

13. Belongings held since booking

Clothing, keys, a wallet, a phone: whatever booking took goes into storage on Keechi Street. It all comes back when the person leaves. To have a relative pick it up sooner, ask the jail at 903-389-3236 what release form is needed and what ID to show.

Evidence is a separate matter, held until the case permits release. The defense lawyer, or the prosecutors at 903-389-3977, can say when.

14. Medical or mental health worries for an inmate

Phone the jail right away at 903-389-3236. Let staff know about prescriptions, allergies, a pregnancy or a mental health condition. Health privacy means staff may say little back, yet they will relay what you report.

Texas makes each jail offer a grievance process. Still stuck? File with TCJS, the state's jail inspectors, on the TCJS complaint page, by phone at 512-463-5505 or at info@tcjs.state.tx.us. The commission's Austin mail drop, P.O. Box 12985, Austin, TX 78711, accepts paper complaints from Freestone.

Main, Fairfield, TX 75840, 903-390-8442; or Precinct 4, 800 Main St, Teague, TX 75860, 903-388-5339. Statewide, DPS keeps a fugitive list of its most wanted.

A warrant here is best handled with a defense lawyer guiding you. Plan a surrender, or post bond through the court that issued it. For a County Court warrant, phone the County Clerk at 903-389-2635.

16. Checking the next hearing date

Call with a case number in hand, or with the name and birth date. The District Clerk at 903-389-2534 gives felony dates. The County Clerk at 903-389-2635 gives misdemeanor dates, and County Court settings are on Freestone's dockets page.

A Class C ticket lands before a JP or before the Fairfield city court. IVSS-Counties subscribers also get a heads-up about new or changed settings. Each court is explained on our court guide.

17. Freestone arrests on federal charges

A federal case from Freestone goes to the court in Waco (Western District, Waco Division), 800 Franklin Avenue, Room 380, Waco, TX 76701, 254-750-1501. In Waco, a federal magistrate weighs release at a detention hearing (18 U.S.C. 3142).

Before trial, the Marshals Service in Waco keeps custody, often renting county jail beds. The Waco Marshals office is at 800 Franklin Avenue, Room 200, Waco, TX 76701, 254-750-1570. People awaiting a federal trial often don't show in the prison bureau's search.

Once sentenced, search the Federal Bureau of Prisons inmate locator using a name or BOP register number.

↑ Back to the question list

18. Freestone inmates with an ICE detainer

Through a Form I-247A detainer, ICE may ask Keechi Street to hold your person up to 48 hours after they would otherwise be released, giving agents time to collect them (8 CFR 287.7(d)). Under CCP art. 2A.060, the Keechi Street jail has to comply, barring proof that the person is here lawfully. On top of that, a 2025 Texas law set a deadline of December 1, 2026 for jail-keeping sheriffs, Freestone's included, to pursue 287(g) status with ICE. The Keechi Street office can tell you its status.

After ICE takes over, use the ICE Online Detainee Locator. Enter the A-number. Lacking one, combine the person's full name with their country of birth. When that fails, ICE points families to a field office. Near this county, those are Dallas, 8101 N. Stemmons Freeway, Dallas, TX 75247, 972-367-2200, and Houston, 126 Northpoint Drive, Houston, TX 77060, 281-774-4816.

19. After a prison sentence from Freestone

A felony sentence means waiting on Keechi Street for a TDCJ bed. Once moved, the person is classified at intake and later placed on a unit.

Families can query the TDCJ inmate lookup using a surname plus the first-name initial. A TDCJ or SID number also pulls up the record. The agency refreshes it on business days, so a Keechi Street transfer may take a day or two to appear. Unit-by-unit detail, visiting included, sits in the Texas prisons guide we keep.

20. When a child is arrested in Freestone

Kids aged 10 to 16 stay out of the Keechi Street adult jail. The arresting officer must reach a parent and take the youth to a designated juvenile processing office or to detention. Within two working days, after counsel is appointed, a juvenile judge decides on further detention (Family Code §§ 52.02, 54.01). Texas charges 17-year-olds as adults, so Keechi Street can book them.

For a child's whereabouts, phone the Sheriff at 903-389-3236. To ask for a free lawyer, use the juvenile board's indigence affidavit.
