Hunt County Inmate Search: Locating Someone Held on Stuart Street

Grown-ups arrested here are housed at the Hunt County Detention Center, 2801 Stuart St., Greenville, TX 75401, which the Sheriff's Office runs. Greenville also runs a municipal jail of its own. Each answer below tackles one worry, from the first search to the court calendar.

Fastest first step: the Sheriff's inmate booking search. Click Search with every box left blank to pull up today's full list, or type in a date range to see who was held during those days.

Then phone Jail Information at 903-453-6849. With an ID handy, give the legal name and birth date. Ask three things: the listed offenses, the amount of bail, and when they first appear before a judge. Getting them home starts on our bail page; hearings and pleas are covered on our court page.

1. Is there a Hunt County jail lookup online?

The Sheriff's booking search is a plain form with a few boxes. Try it this way:

  1. Go to the jail booking search.
  2. For a list of everyone on Stuart Street today, leave the boxes empty and hit Search.
  3. For an older booking, type one date or a range of dates. Anyone in custody during that stretch shows up, even if they have since gone home.
  4. If the list runs long, use the setting that caps the number of results.
  5. Write down what the result shows before you phone the jail.

The county also runs a Jail Records search on its court records portal. It is a second place to look. Questions about a result go to Jail Information at 903-453-6849.

2. Why isn't the name coming up?

No match? Run through these possibilities:

  • Still being processed. The Stuart Street staff take prints, a photo and forms before the name goes up. Look again tonight or tomorrow morning.
  • Spelled differently. Search part of the surname, or a married or former name.
  • Held by the city. Greenville police run a jail in their Police and Courts Building on Lee Street (number 3000). The department's line is 903-457-2900.
  • Released already. Search a date range that includes the day of the arrest.
  • Picked up in another county. Then that county's jail has them.

Still nothing? Jail Information at 903-453-6849 can check by name and birth date.

3. Which jail could your person be in?

There is a single county lockup for adults: the Detention Center at 2801 Stuart St., Greenville, TX 75401. The Sheriff's Office shares that site. In its June 2022 report, the Texas Commission on Jail Standards put the jail's capacity at 345 beds. Jail Information answers at 903-453-6849, and the Sheriff's main line is 903-453-6800.

The City of Greenville runs a separate municipal jail in its Police and Courts Building. The department at 903-457-2900 can say if someone is held there.

Someone arrested over the line in a bordering county is booked into that county's own jail. Our pages for the eight bordering jails list each address and phone:

4. How can I get Hunt County mugshots?

A mugshot, meaning the booking photo, can be requested in writing from the Sheriff's Office, 2801 Stuart St., Greenville, TX 75401, 903-453-6800. Title your letter "Public Information Act request" and give the person's name and arrest date. The Act says basic arrest information may not be held back (Gov't Code 552.108(c)). An office that needs over ten business days must give you a date.

Watch out for private mugshot sites. Texas law covers sites that charge $150 or more for removal. If a record they post is wrong or incomplete, they have to fix it or take it down for free. They also may not post a record that a court expunged or sealed by nondisclosure (Bus. & Com. Code ch. 109).

Immigration photos need an ICE records request. Photos from federal arrests rarely go public, except when the Marshals are seeking a fugitive.

5. Is there a way to get an alert about a release?

Sign up with Texas IVSS-Counties. This free Texas system tracks people in county jails. On the IVSS-Counties site, enter a first or last name, or part of one, and pick the right match. No account is required to register for notices. Alerts cover release, transfer and court event changes.

Signing up stays confidential; the inmate isn't told. Help by phone, in English or Spanish, is open 24/7 at 866-268-8959.

↑ Back to the question list

6. Who can get them out, and how fast?

Within 48 hours, a magistrate holds a short hearing (Crim. Proc. Code 15.17). The person hears the charge and their rights, may ask for a court-appointed lawyer, and learns the bail. Bond can be cash, a surety bond from a bondsman on the local board's list, or a no-cash personal bond. Violent charges often rule out that last kind.

A paid bond can still leave someone inside if another county, a parole officer or ICE has a hold. Each step is on our bail page. To ask about a bond, call Jail Information at 903-453-6849.

↑ Back to the question list

7. Which offenses did the Stuart Street booking list?

Four ways to learn the charges:

  • Ask the jail. Jail Information at 903-453-6849 can read the booking charges.
  • Search court files. The county's Court Records Search shows filed cases.
  • Use the state site. With a free account, re:SearchTX shows the charging papers once a case is filed.
  • Call a clerk. Both are on the 2nd Floor at 2507 Lee Street, Greenville, TX 75401. Felonies: District Clerk, 903-408-4172. Class A and B misdemeanors: County Clerk, 903-408-4130.

At the first hearing, the magistrate states each charge as well.

8. How does someone behind bars get a free lawyer?

A judge appoints one when the person can't pay. Ask at the magistrate hearing, where the forms are handed out and help is given. The District Clerk receives the paperwork. With fewer than 250,000 residents here, Crim. Proc. Code 1.051(c) allows three working days after the request.

The district court plan sets the bar at 125% of the federal poverty guidelines. People on SNAP, Medicaid, TANF, SSI or housing aid qualify too. Making bail doesn't count against them. If the charge is capital, the Regional Public Defender for Capital Cases may step in; reach it at 806-696-3740, or by mail at P.O. Box 2097, Lubbock, TX 79408.

Want an update? The District Clerk, 2507 Lee St., 2nd Floor, Greenville, TX 75401, answers at 903-408-4172. A family may also hire a private defense lawyer whenever it wants.

9. When are visits allowed at the Hunt County jail?

Visiting days are Wednesday, Friday and Sunday, and every visit must be booked ahead by phone at 903-453-6850:

  • Call on Tuesday to book a Wednesday visit.
  • Call on Thursday to book a Friday or Sunday visit.
  • The line is answered from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. If nobody picks up, leave a message and expect a call back that day.
  • Nobody answers after 4:00 p.m.
  • Holiday weeks can change the schedule.

State standards guarantee each person at least two visits weekly. Each lasts no less than 20 minutes, and at least one falls on an evening or weekend. See our visitation page for more about visiting this jail.

10. What is the way to send them money?

Phone Jail Information at 903-453-6849 first. Find out the accepted ways to deposit, any fee, and which ID number to include. Do not put cash in an envelope.

See our inmate deposits page and commissary page for how the account is used.

↑ Back to the question list

11. Can people in the jail make calls or send messages?

Yes, but the setup belongs to the jail, so ask Jail Information at 903-453-6849 how calls are billed and whether messages or tablets are offered. By Texas rule, the booking area must have a phone that new arrivals can use (37 Tex. Admin. Code 259.119).

Talk through the facts of the case with the defense lawyer instead of on a jail phone. More is on our jail calls and messaging pages.

12. Where do letters for Stuart Street go?

Ask Jail Information at 903-453-6849 for the right mailing address before you send anything. Also ask about photos, paper and books, and what ID number belongs on the envelope.

Texas sets the floor for mail. A person in jail may get letters in any number and length. Staff check attorney letters for contraband only, and do it with the recipient present (Texas Commission on Jail Standards, Rule 291.2). A jail may still refuse an item that breaks its rules. More on writing to someone held there is on our jail mail page.

↑ Back to the question list

13. Can I pick up their wallet, keys or phone?

On release day, ask staff for every item taken at booking, and look it over before you leave.

Anything the Sheriff's Office still holds after that, property or evidence, is released by appointment. Call 903-453-6849 to set one at 2801 Stuart St., Greenville, TX 75401. Bring a photo ID. Collecting items for another person? Ask staff ahead of time what signed permission they require.

14. Who can help with a health problem inside?

Call Jail Information at 903-453-6849 right away. Share health conditions, allergies and medicines. Ask how to get medicine or medical records to the jail's health staff.

The jail must post its complaint process and put it in the inmate handbook (37 Tex. Admin. Code 251.6). When a complaint goes nowhere, the state jail board can step in. File through the Texas Commission on Jail Standards complaint page, call 512-463-5505, or email info@tcjs.state.tx.us. The board's P.O. Box 12985, Austin, TX 78711, takes paper complaints.

15. How do I check for a Hunt County warrant?

The Sheriff's Office, 2801 Stuart St., Greenville, TX 75401, 903-453-6800, serves warrants, along with four constable offices and city officers. Phone the deputies with a name, or ask the court that would have issued it. Commerce lists its city court's open warrants online. Texas's most-sought fugitives appear in DPS Texas 10 Most Wanted, with photos. A warrant is best handled with a lawyer at your side, who can line up a surrender or a bond with the issuing judge. On a felony, the District Clerk, 2507 Lee St., 2nd Floor, Greenville, TX 75401, 903-408-4172, can tell you which court has it.

17. What if the case is federal?

Federal charges from this area are handled in the Dallas courthouse of the Northern District of Texas, 1100 Commerce Street, Room 1452, Dallas, TX 75242, 214-753-2200.

  • A federal magistrate judge holds the detention hearing under 18 U.S.C. 3142.
  • The U.S. Marshals Service controls custody before trial. Its Dallas office is at 1100 Commerce Street, Room 1657, Dallas, TX 75242, 214-767-0836. Call it to learn where someone is held.
  • After sentencing, the Federal Bureau of Prisons inmate locator finds people by name or register number.
↑ Back to the question list

18. Where do I look once ICE has custody?

Step by step, an ICE hold looks like this:

  1. ICE sends the Stuart Street jail a Form I-247A detainer.
  2. Once it arrives, the person can stay in custody up to 48 hours past their release time (8 CFR 287.7(d)). ICE uses that time to pick them up.
  3. Texas jails are required to honor detainers, apart from people who prove lawful status (Crim. Proc. Code 2A.060). S.B. 4 (2017) blocks local governments from restricting enforcement. S.B. 8 (2025) tied every jail county to a December 1, 2026 date for requesting a 287(g) agreement. Ask the Sheriff's Office, 903-453-6800, about this county.
  4. After ICE takes custody, try the ICE Online Detainee Locator. Have the A-number ready; if you lack it, the locator takes a name plus birth country.

Still lost? Call the ICE Dallas Field Office, 8101 N. Stemmons Freeway, Dallas, TX 75247, 972-367-2200.

19. Which site shows Texas prison inmates?

A prison sentence means a move from Stuart Street to the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. At an intake unit, each new prisoner is checked and classified, then assigned to a unit that fits.

On the TDCJ inmate search, the surname must match exactly, plus a first initial. If you know the TDCJ or SID number, that is quicker. Only people now inside TDCJ appear. Records are updated only on working days and are at least a day old. Our Texas state prisons page has more.

20. What happens with a teen under 18?

Texas prosecutes anyone 17 or older as an adult, so a 17-year-old can land on Stuart Street. For a younger child, age 10 or more on the offense date, juvenile court hears the case (Fam. Code 51.02).

Police owe the parents prompt notice (Fam. Code 52.02). Within two working days, the juvenile judge holds a detention hearing, and a lawyer is appointed before it (Fam. Code 54.01). Juvenile Probation, at 2700 Johnson Street, Greenville, TX 75401, 903-455-8555, knows which detention center has the child and the hearing time.
