Presidio County Inmate Search: Who Is Held in Marfa and How to Reach Them
Adults jailed in this far West Texas county are held at the Presidio County Jail, 320 N. Highland Ave., Marfa, TX 79843, the Sheriff's one adult lockup. A June 2022 state report counted 112 beds, with most people inside that day held for federal or contract agencies. Use the answers below to track down your person and handle the charges, bail, visiting, letters, deposits and court.
Open the Sheriff's arrest log, posted as one page per year with entries grouped by month. Each line gives a name, the arrest date and the charges, and warrant arrests name the county that issued the warrant. For bond amounts and release news, call the jail.
Ring the Sheriff's Office at 432-729-4308, staffed every hour of every day. Have the person's name and birthday ready when you ask about custody, charges and bail. Bondsmen and release terms fill our bail page. Hearings, start to finish, get their own court walkthrough.
1. Reading the Presidio County arrest log
The log is one long list per year, easy to scan on a phone. Try this:
- Pull up the current year's arrest log.
- Scroll to the month the arrest happened.
- Use the search-within-page feature of your browser to hunt for the surname.
- Note the arrest date and every charge on that line. A warrant line names the county that wants the person.
- Jot it all down before calling, so the deputy can pull the right file quickly.
Remember that the log records arrests. Whether the person is still behind bars today is a question for 432-729-4308.
↑ Back to the question list2. No name on the log yet?
Reasons a person might be absent from the log:
- Booked minutes ago. Fresh arrests can take time to reach the page.
- Already out. A bond, a magistrate's release or a transfer may have come first.
- Held for an outside agency. Federal and contract prisoners may be logged another way, or kept in a different jail.
- Spelled differently. Try each surname if the person uses two, plus nicknames or a maiden name.
- Under 17. Texas keeps juvenile cases away from the adult jail.
Deputies answer 432-729-4308 around the clock. A busy signal? Try the backup line, 432-729-4911.
↑ Back to the question list3. Could a neighboring jail have them?
This county operates a single adult jail, the Presidio County Jail, 320 N. Highland Ave., Marfa, TX 79843, 432-729-4308. Sheriff's dispatchers also send out the Marfa and Presidio city officers.
Someone picked up close to the county line, or wanted by a nearby county, may sit in one of these neighboring jails:
- Brewster County Jail, 307 W. Sul Ross Ave, Alpine, TX 79830, 432-837-6200 (ask for the jail)
- Hudspeth County Jail, 525 North Wilson, Sierra Blanca, TX 79851, 915-369-2161
Federal defendants may be shifted to whichever jail has a U.S. Marshals contract and an open bed.
↑ Back to the question list4. Getting Presidio County mugshots
Names on the Sheriff's arrest log link to image files; deputies can explain what each one shows. Want the jail's own picture? Write a Public Information Act letter for it. Address: Sheriff's Office, 320 N. Highland Avenue, Marfa, TX 79843, 432-729-4308. Texas treats basic arrest details as public (Gov't Code 552.108).
- Sites charging $150 or more to remove mugshots must fix wrong or incomplete ones free of charge, and they may not publish records a court has expunged or sealed. Texas sets these limits in chapter 109 of the Business & Commerce Code.
- Pictures snapped by immigration agents require a request on ICE's FOIA request page.
- Federal booking pictures stay private, except that the U.S. Marshals may publish a wanted person's photo.
5. Free custody notices from the state
Free notices now come through Texas IVSS-Counties, which replaced Texas VINE. Type a full or partial name at the IVSS-Counties site to check custody, then ask for notices when someone is booked, released, moved or has a court date changed. No account is required.
- Help by phone, 24/7, in English or Spanish: 866-268-8959.
- Inmates are never told who signed up to watch their case.
Nothing beats a direct call to the Marfa jail, 432-729-4308, on release day.
↑ Back to the question list6. Bail and release after a Presidio County arrest
Jailed adults hear their rights from a magistrate inside two days. That judge also offers appointed counsel and sets bail. Options include cash for the full amount, a bondsman's guarantee, or a personal bond signed on a promise. Certain violent counts block the personal bond. Since Proposition 3 of 2025, a hearing can end with no bail at all on certain violent felonies.
- Get the bail figure for each count by calling 432-729-4308.
- On a family violence case, release may wait an extra 4 hours after bond.
- Immigration detainers and out-of-county warrants survive a paid bond.
Our bail page goes deeper on bondsmen, paying, and getting money back.
↑ Back to the question list7. Finding out the exact charges
Charges show up in plain words on the arrest log, and warrant entries name the county behind them. Prosecutors make the final call on what gets filed:
- Felonies: 83rd Judicial District Attorney, 201 West Ave E, Alpine, TX 79830, 432-837-4420
- Misdemeanors: County Attorney, 2nd Floor, 300 N. Highland Avenue, Marfa, TX 79843, 432-729-4054
After filing, the District Clerk (432-729-3857) or County Clerk (432-729-4812) can read out the formal charge. Indictments and informations can be read online through re:SearchTX, which requires a free account. Penalty levels are in Penal Code chapter 12.
↑ Back to the question list8. Free defense help behind bars
Broke? Say so at the first hearing, to the magistrate. Together they complete the online request, and an appointment follows within three working days.
- Most such cases go to the regional public defender, based at 203 North 7th St., Alpine, TX 79830, 432-837-4120.
- The County Attorney's Office, 300 N. Highland Avenue, Marfa, TX 79843, 432-729-4054, keeps paper copies of the request.
- Having bonded out is not a reason to deny a free lawyer.
Families who prefer can retain their own attorney.
↑ Back to the question list9. Weekend visiting at the Presidio County Jail
The visiting room opens on weekends:
- Saturday: 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., then 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
- Sunday: 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
Every inmate gets two visits each weekend, 20 minutes apiece. Before making the drive, call 432-729-4308 to check ID rules, the dress code, bringing kids, and whether visits are on as planned. Statewide, TCJS standards guarantee at least two visit periods weekly, including one on a weekend or evening. Our visitation tips help first-time visitors.
↑ Back to the question list10. Deposits for a Marfa inmate
The Sheriff names two deposit methods:
- Online with a credit or debit card at JailATM.com, the service the Sheriff's jail page points to.
- Through the mail as a money order addressed to Presidio County Jail, P.O. Drawer V, Marfa, TX 79843.
Call 432-729-4308 for the payee name on money orders and any fees or caps. Deposits buy snacks, soap, stamps and similar items. Read our deposit guide and the commissary rundown for more. Never tuck cash into an envelope.
↑ Back to the question list11. Phone calls, video and messages

Save case talk for attorney meetings, since jail phones are a poor place for it. Our guide to inmate calls and guide to jail messaging go deeper.
↑ Back to the question list12. Mailing letters to the Marfa jail
Write the address like this:
C/O the inmate's full name
Presidio County Jail
P.O. Drawer V
Marfa, TX 79843
Include a return address. No Texas rule caps an inmate's letter count. Envelopes from an attorney get unsealed only while the inmate looks on. Photos, books and magazines have their own rules, so phone 432-729-4308 first. Our letter-writing guide has general advice.
↑ Back to the question list13. Picking up property after release or transfer
The jail bags up wallets, phones and clothing at intake and holds them. Collecting them for someone? Call 432-729-4308 ahead to find out about signed permission and pickup hours. Then carry photo ID to 320 N. Highland Ave., Marfa, TX 79843.
For a move to prison or another county, ask if belongings and leftover account money travel along.
↑ Back to the question list14. Health, medicine and emergencies in jail
Care for sick or injured inmates is the Sheriff's job. Phone 432-729-4308 about prescriptions or a medical condition, and have the medicine name, dosage and prescriber's number ready.
Texas makes jail staff tell a magistrate within 12 hours if mental illness seems likely. Outside the jail, 911 handles emergencies. Problems with jail conditions may be raised with TCJS, the state's oversight body, through its complaint form or by phone at 512-463-5505.
↑ Back to the question list15. Checking for a Presidio County warrant
Deputies serve warrants county-wide, so start with the Sheriff's Office, 432-729-4308. Presidio's city police answer at 432-229-3527; Marfa officers go out through Sheriff's dispatch. The Texas 10 Most Wanted fugitives appear on a DPS page. Marfa's municipal court warns that unpaid tickets lead to warrants. To settle a warrant, reach the issuing court for a new setting, or turn yourself in there alongside a lawyer. Got a felony warrant? Phone the District Clerk, whose desk sits at 300 N. Highland Avenue, Marfa, TX 79843, 432-729-3857.

18. Finding someone held by ICE
Immigration holds in Texas run in a set order:
- ICE lodges Form I-247A with the Marfa jail.
- Jailers are then allowed to hold the person up to 48 hours after they would otherwise be released (8 CFR 287.7(d)).

- Want addresses and visiting rules for a unit? Browse our Texas state prisons listing.
20. When a Presidio County kid is arrested
Offenses by kids from age 10 up through 16 belong to juvenile court, and such kids stay out of the adult jail. Texas charges 17-year-olds the same as grown-ups. Officers owe parents a prompt call after taking a child in.
- Locked-up kids see a judge in two working days or less, and their lawyer is named first.
- One juvenile board serves three neighbors: Presidio, Brewster and Jeff Davis.
