Somervell County Jail Inmate Search
Somervell County Inmate Search: Where an Arrest Leads
The Sheriff's Office keeps the county's one adult jail, the Somervell County Jail, 750 E. Gibbs Boulevard, Glen Rose, TX 76043, with 57 beds on the state's books. Read on to find a person there, request mugshots, set up visits and money, send letters, check warrants and follow the case.
First stop: Texas IVSS-Counties, a free custody notice system run for the state, where a partial name works. VINELink, still linked from the Sheriff's web page, was replaced by IVSS-Counties when Texas VINE ended in 2025. After that, try the official jail search.
Phoning beats waiting: dial the jail at 254-897-2242. Share the spelling and a birth date, then ask what the booking charge is, how much bond was set and when court comes first. Release steps fill our bail page. Hearings and the case's progress appear on our court page.
1. Tracking down someone held in Somervell County
Four moves, in this order:
- On IVSS-Counties, key in a surname or its first letters. Adding a first name trims the list.
- Click the record that fits and note its custody status.
- Double-check with the official jail search.
- Still unsure? Ring 254-897-2242; Booking can check if you have a birth date handy.
IVSS-Counties tracks people in custody or on supervision right now. Fresh arrests can lag behind, which is why the phone call matters.
↑ Back to the question list2. The name won't come up. Why?
Common reasons a name stays hidden:
- Booking is still underway. Give it a few hours.
- A typo or a nickname. Shorten the surname search or try a name used before marriage.
- Release already happened, by bond or by a magistrate's order.
- A move to another county, the Marshals, ICE or TDCJ. Each of those gets its own answer lower down.
- The person is 16 or younger and went to juvenile processing.
The Sheriff's Office dispatches for Glen Rose police, the constables and state agencies in the county. Its Records staff at 254-897-2242 can often trace an arrest the online tools miss.
↑ Back to the question list3. Somervell County lockup, plus nearby jails to try
The county's adult jail is a single building: the Somervell County Jail at 750 E. Gibbs Boulevard, Glen Rose, TX 76043, 254-897-2242. Built for 57, it held 48 on the state's June 1, 2022 count, and 16 of those were contract inmates kept for other agencies.
Someone picked up across a county line, or moved when beds run short, might be in a neighboring jail. Three to ask about:
- Hood County Jail, 400 Deputy Larry Miller Drive, Granbury, TX 76048, 817-579-3333
- Johnson County Correctional Facility, 1800 Ridgemar Dr, Cleburne, TX 76031, 817-556-6000
- Bosque County Jail, 266 FM 2840, Meridian, TX 76665, 254-435-9966
Nothing official ties these jails to people from here, so phone the Gibbs Boulevard jail before you make the drive.
↑ Back to the question list4. Requesting Somervell County mugshots
A written Public Information Act request is how to ask for booking photos, also called mugshots. Deliver or mail the request to the Sheriff's Office, 750 E. Gibbs Boulevard, Glen Rose, TX 76043, or fax 254-897-9414 on a weekday between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Include the full name, birth date and date of arrest.
Release has to be prompt. A wait past ten business days means the office must name a date. Withholding a record generally requires asking the Attorney General to rule.
- For ICE photos, a FOIA request goes through ICE's online form.
- Federal booking photos are withheld, except that the U.S. Marshals sometimes publish one during a fugitive hunt.
- A mugshot website that charges $150 or more to take a record down has to fix an incomplete or mistaken record without charging. They must also leave expunged or nondisclosed records off (Bus. & Com. Code ch. 109).
5. Free alerts for a release, transfer or court change
Sign up on Texas IVSS-Counties by name, account optional. It reports bookings, releases, custody moves such as a transfer to TDCJ, and new or changed court events. Help by phone, 866-268-8959, never closes and speaks English and Spanish.
No fee applies, and the person being tracked is not told. On September 1, 2026, management moved to the Office of the Governor.
↑ Back to the question list6. Getting out: bond types and the 48-hour hearing
Texas law gives the magistrate 48 hours after an arrest (CCP art. 15.17). In that meeting the person hears their rights, gets a chance to request a free lawyer and has bail set. Three bond types exist in Texas:
- Cash: the whole amount, paid in.
- Surety: a licensed bondsman signs on, for a fee.
- Personal: a signed promise to come back, off-limits for many violent charges.
The jail, 254-897-2242, can give the amount and where to post it. Holds, refunds and other release rules fill our bail page.
↑ Back to the question list7. Finding out the charge
By phone, jail staff at 254-897-2242 can read the booking charge. The formal paperwork follows: an information from the County Attorney for Class A and B cases, and usually a grand jury indictment for a felony. Case files sit with:
- District Clerk (felonies), 102 NE Vine Street, Glen Rose, TX 76043, 254-898-3971
- County Clerk (Class A and B), 254-897-4427
- justice courts (Class C), 254-897-2120
Names can also be searched on the District Clerk's court records portal. In Texas, a Class C offense is punished by a fine alone. Class B can bring 180 days of jail, Class A a full year, and felonies reach from state jail time to life.
↑ Back to the question list8. A free lawyer for someone who can't pay
At the 48-hour hearing, the magistrate offers help filling out a request for appointed counsel. The county's appointed-counsel plan rotates cases among private attorneys. Some people are presumed unable to pay. That covers anyone on SNAP, Medicaid, TANF or SSI, anyone in public housing, and anyone whose net income doesn't pass 125% of the poverty guideline.
Later requests can go to the county's felony or misdemeanor indigent defense coordinator. The Texas Indigent Defense Commission, 209 West 14th Street, Room 202, Austin, TX 78701, 866-499-0656, also takes questions. Appointed counsel owes the client contact, or a real attempt at it, within a working day of appointment (CCP art. 26.04).
↑ Back to the question list9. Seeing them in person at the Somervell County jail
Before visiting, call 254-897-2242 for the schedule, ID rules and whether the jail runs video visits, from home or on site. Texas sets a floor that each county jail must meet:
- noncontact visits twice weekly at minimum, 20 minutes each or more
- one or more of those periods falling on an evening or a weekend
- minors visiting: a parent or guardian may be required
- extra visits for verified veterans, which don't use up the weekly minimum
Our visitation page explains what a visit day is like.
↑ Back to the question list10. Funding a jail account
Deposit options and any weekly limit come straight from the jail, 254-897-2242. Hang on to receipts, and at release ask how leftover funds are paid back. For an overview, see our money page, and check the commissary page for what the balance pays for.
↑ Back to the question list11. Phone time and messages
A telephone for detainee use must sit in the booking area, a state design rule says. Ongoing calls typically need a prepaid account, and the jail, 254-897-2242, can name its provider. Our phone page breaks down call costs, and the messaging page covers electronic notes.
↑ Back to the question list12. Letters to the Gibbs Boulevard jail
Texas jail standards allow unlimited letters both ways, at any page count. Letters from a lawyer get opened in the inmate's presence, and the only search allowed is for contraband. Inmates who can't pay get free paper and stamps covering at least three letters a week.
Confirm the address format by calling 254-897-2242 first. The jail's street address is 750 E. Gibbs Boulevard, Glen Rose, TX 76043. The Sheriff's business box, P.O. Box 3268, uses the same city and ZIP. Use the person's full legal name, and check our mail page for things jails often reject.
↑ Back to the question list13. Picking up their things
Ask the jail at 254-897-2242 whether the person can sign their belongings over to a relative. Also ask what ID to bring and when pickup is allowed.
Evidence stays tied to the case. On a misdemeanor, the County Attorney, 254-897-2277, explains how to seek its return. On a felony, call the District Attorney, 817-556-6802.
↑ Back to the question list14. A health or safety worry inside
Report an illness, missing medicine or a threat to the jail at 254-897-2242 without delay, and ask for the supervisor on duty. Each Texas jail must spell out how to complain, both in its handbook and on signs inside (rule 37 TAC 251.6(c)).
If the jail doesn't fix it, TCJS, the Texas Commission on Jail Standards, is the next stop for complaints. Its online complaint form is one route. Another is a call to 512-463-5505 or a letter to P.O. Box 12985 in Austin, TX 78711-2985.
Two mental health rules apply. When staff notice signs of mental illness, the magistrate has to be told within 12 hours, per CCP art. 16.22. A person in emergency mental health custody at a jail must be separated from those facing charges, under Health and Safety Code 573.001(a).
↑ Back to the question list15. Could a Somervell County warrant be waiting?
Warrant service is a job for sheriff's deputies, 254-897-2242, and for constables, 254-898-3926. DPS keeps photos of high-priority fugitives on a Texas 10 Most Wanted board. Wondering about a local warrant? Ask the Sheriff's Office by phone, or try the clerk of the court you suspect signed it. A lawyer is the best first call before clearing one. Then comes a surrender at the jail, 750 E. Gibbs Boulevard, Glen Rose, TX 76043, or the lawyer can request a fresh setting from the court that issued it. Felony warrant records sit in the District Clerk's office, 102 NE Vine Street, Glen Rose, TX 76043, 254-898-3971.
↑ Back to the question list16. When does the case go to court next?
Calendars by case level:
- Felony: District Clerk, 102 NE Vine Street, Glen Rose, TX 76043, 254-898-3971
- Class A or B: County Clerk, 254-897-4427
- Class C: justice courts, 254-897-2120
The District Clerk's hearings and records search works by name, and an IVSS-Counties alert can also warn of a court date that changes. Our court page walks through each stage.
Skipping a fine-only court date can hit a driver's license. In counties that contract with DPS, a justice or municipal court can stop a renewal until the case ends, bond is posted or the fine is paid. Each missed appearance adds a $10 fee (Transportation Code ch. 706).
↑ Back to the question list17. Held on a federal charge
The Western District of Texas hears these in Waco, at 800 Franklin Avenue, Room 380, Waco, TX 76701, 254-750-1501.
- U.S. Marshals hold anyone arrested on a federal charge. Call the Waco office, 800 Franklin Avenue, Room 200, Waco, TX 76701, 254-750-1570, to learn the pretrial location.
- A federal magistrate judge decides pretrial freedom at a detention hearing (18 U.S.C. 3142).
- The Federal Public Defender, 510 Austin Ave, Room 380, Waco, TX 76701, 737-207-4567, steps in for those who can't afford counsel.
- After sentencing, BOP custody begins. Check the Bureau of Prisons' online inmate locator for the facility.
18. An ICE detainer on the person
- A detainer, Form I-247A, arrives from immigration officers.
- Once it's in place, the person can be held up to 48 hours after they would otherwise be released (8 CFR 287.7(d)).
- Agents then pick the person up for immigration detention.
- Search the ICE Online Detainee Locator to find them after the transfer.
- For North Texas, ICE lists a Dallas Field Office at 8101 N. Stemmons Freeway, Dallas, TX 75247, 972-367-2200.
Texas law adds three points. First, CCP art. 2A.060 makes a jail that gets a detainer follow it. Second, under Gov't Code §752.053, which dates to 2017, cities and counties may not set rules that limit immigration enforcement in any material way. Third, S.B. 8 (2025) requires counties operating jails to sign 287(g) agreements with ICE; their time runs out December 1, 2026. Whether this county has one is a question the Sheriff's Office can answer at 254-897-2242.
↑ Back to the question list19. Moved to TDCJ after sentencing
Following a felony sentence, the person waits at the Gibbs Boulevard jail until TDCJ takes them to intake. There, staff sort each person and pick a unit to match. People convicted of state jail felonies go to state jails, and the higher grades go to TDCJ (Penal Code §§12.35, 12.31-12.34).
Use the TDCJ inmate search with an exact surname and one or more initials, or by TDCJ or SID number. Results cover current TDCJ prisoners only and refresh each working day, so they trail by a day or more. For a unit's visit hours and mail rules, there's our Texas state prisons list.
↑ Back to the question list20. A child or teen in custody
Family Code §51.02 sets the juvenile ages at 10 to 16 on the offense date. Anyone already 17 on that date faces adult court. Kids in custody go first to a site the juvenile board designates, such as a processing office or a detention center, not the adult lockup (Family Code §52.02).
- Parents or guardians must get prompt word of the custody and why it happened.
- A parent, guardian or the child's lawyer may be present in the processing office (Family Code §52.025).
- Detention hearing: by working day two at the latest, with a lawyer assigned first (Family Code §54.01).
To learn where a youth was placed, call the Sheriff's Office at 254-897-2242. The Texas Juvenile Justice Department, 1711 San Jacinto Blvd, Austin, TX 78701, 512-490-7130, supervises youth facilities across the state.
↑ Back to the question list21. Which Somervell County agency arrested them?
Every arresting agency here runs through one dispatch center:
- Sheriff's Office: countywide patrol, including outside city limits, plus the jail and dispatch. 750 E. Gibbs Boulevard, Glen Rose, TX 76043, 254-897-2242.
- Glen Rose Police Department: the city force, reached through Sheriff's dispatch on the Sheriff's line.
- Constables: 254-898-3926 or 254-898-3927. As peace officers, they can serve warrants.
- State agencies: these are dispatched by the Sheriff's Office too, so ask there which agency handled the arrest.
