About the Henrico County Jail East

Located in Barhamsville, VA, the Henrico County Jail East is one of the facilities that are located within the city and serve the surrounding counties. Not only are inmates who are arrested within the county of Henrico housed here but also Goochland and New Kent. This agreement and combined effort supplies the three counties with a newer jail that offers up to date security and services that may be inaccessible to any one county based on their own resources. Direct supervision is used at this facility, which has officers actively in the housing units and day rooms with inmates during their shift, encouraging interaction and building trust. This method of supervision has been shown to create a safer environment within jails and can lead to a more positive atmosphere, encouraging inmates to interact in a more positive manner and prevent fights and other disturbances. It also provides faster response times during emergencies or incidents.

Along with this approach to supervision, the jail uses many other progressive approaches to rehabilitation including GED classes, cosmetology and automotive repair courses, computer technology classes, counselling, and treatment for substance abuse as well as prevention skills. Upgrades included adding tablets and video visitation for all inmates, so they are better able to remain in contact with inmates who are related or who are friends. These are operated through gettingout.com and inmate are able to initiate phone conversations and even visitations with their loved ones. This removes the requirement for strict visiting hours and allows people who live further from the jail to access regular visits. Care packages can be ordered and sent directly to inmates through accesscatalog.com and these are accessible to any of the friends or family of those who are incarcerated.
