New River Valley Juvenile Detention Home Information

The New River Valley Juvenile Detention Home is a 24 bed facility providing a safe and secure environment for the juvenile offenders of the jurisdictions of Radford, Giles County, Montgomery County, and Pulaski County. As a regional facility it is supported financially by all of the participating jurisdictions to allow for the most advanced and capable facility. Each of the youth is aged 7 to 17, with the majority being 13-16 years old. On average a youth will remain in the facility for 16 days, with the ability to house them for up to 6 months if necessary. Meals are designed by a nutritionist and there are three meals and three snacks each day, ensuring that each resident is eating the nutrients they need for their health. Several classes and programs are offered that will develop vocational skills and provide employable skills for residents, and they will attend activities that will improve social skills, learn new life skills, and receive treatments for substance abuse, learn anger management, receive counseling, and play sports when they are not in school. Mail: 650 Wades Lane Christiansburg, VA 24073 Youth are able to send two letters each week, which will be sent to the parents regardless of their final recipient and parents may forward that mail to the final receiver. All mail that is incoming will be photocopied and youth will be provided with the copy while the original is shredded. Phones: Youth who are following the rules and receive no disciplinary actions during a week will be permitted to call their parents or guardians over the weekend. This is in addition to the call they are able to make upon their intake. Visitation: Only parents or legal guardians are permitted to visit. Visiting occurs on Wednesday 6pm-6:30pm and Sunday 1pm-1:30pm. You must arrive 15 minutes before your scheduled visit. Youth who are attending a weekend program and are within the facility for 48 hours or less each week will not qualify for a visit.
