Big Horn County Detention Center Inmate Search
Big Horn County Inmate Search: Finding Someone in the Basin Jail
Every adult arrested in Big Horn County, whether in Lovell, Greybull, Cowley, Manderson or out near Shell, is booked into the Big Horn County Detention Center at 415 Murphy St., Basin, WY 82410. It opened in 2001 and holds up to 86 people. Some of its beds are rented out to federal agencies, so not everyone inside was arrested locally. You can check on a person three ways: the Sheriff's official inmate search, the free VINE custody search, or a call to the jail at 307-568-9311. To learn about getting someone released, read our bail page. To understand the hearings ahead, read our court guide. Roughly 12,000 people live in the county.
1. How do I check who is in the Big Horn County jail?
- Open the official inmate search, where the Sheriff lists current inmates, arrests and calls for service.
- Scan the inmate list for the person's last name.
- If you can't tell, search Wyoming's VINE system with just a first and last name. It shows whether the person is in custody.
- Last, phone the jail at 307-568-9311. Ask a short yes-or-no question, like "Is this person booked there?" Detention staff won't hand out personal details over the phone.
Wyoming law lets a county jail share someone's name, the place they're held and their release date with the public (W.S. 7-19-106(m)).
↑ Back to the question list2. Why might a name be missing from the list?
Don't panic yet. A name can be absent for an ordinary reason:
- Paperwork is still going. Booking means prints, a photo and forms, and that takes a while. Look again later in the day.
- They already left. A person may walk out fast after a citation, a written promise to appear or a bond.
- They're somewhere else. A neighboring county, the state troopers or a federal office could have them.
- The name is typed another way. Search a nickname, a middle name or a hyphenated last name.
For a copy of an arrest report, fill out the Sheriff's records request form and email it to Dispatch. Expect up to 10 business days, and there may be a fee. Dispatch can answer questions any time of day at 307-568-2324.
↑ Back to the question list3. Could a nearby county be holding them?
The Murphy Street building is the only adult jail in the county. Still, a person picked up close to a county border, or wanted somewhere else, might be in one of these:
- Park County Detention Center, 1402 River View Drive, Cody, WY 82414, 307-527-8750.
- Washakie County Detention Center, 100 North 10th Street, Worland, WY 82401, 307-347-4581.
- Sheridan County Detention Center, 54 West 13th Street, Sheridan, WY 82801, 307-672-5623.
- Johnson County Detention Center, 639 Fort Street, Buffalo, WY 82834, 307-684-5584.
Sometimes a judge elsewhere in Wyoming sets bond by video while the person sits in Basin. Then relatives get one day, 24 hours, to pay it. After that, the person can be driven to that county (W.R.Cr.P. 46.1(g)).
↑ Back to the question list4. Are Big Horn County booking photos released?
A booking photo is snapped when someone is checked into jail. Wyoming permits jails to share a photo and physical description, but it doesn't force them to (W.S. 7-19-106(m)). If you want one, ask the Sheriff's Office at 307-568-2324, or email its records form to Dispatch.
Photos held by other offices are requested from them. State prison photos come through the Corrections public information line, 307-777-5889. For immigration files, fill out a request on the ICE records page.
↑ Back to the question list5. Can VINE warn me about a release?
Yes. VINE is a free service that works around the clock for anybody. Look the person up in VINE and register for a phone call, text or email. It will reach out when their status changes, for example if they're let go or moved. You can also register by calling 866-994-8463, with help in English and Spanish.
Releases sometimes happen within hours. If you need to know right now, ring the jail at 307-568-9311.
↑ Back to the question list6. What decides the bail amount after an arrest?
Wyoming's circuit courts handle bail, and a magistrate works here full time to help with that. For lots of minor misdemeanors, a statewide schedule already lists the bond, from $85 up to $450. If a charge isn't on that schedule, the person waits to see a judge.
When the arrest was on a warrant that has a bond, the court that signed the warrant has the details. It might be the felony court, the misdemeanor court, Basin's town judge or the Greybull police. Ask the jail about the amount and how to pay at 307-568-9311. Our bail guide covers the whole process.
↑ Back to the question list7. Where are the charges written down?
The court file shows the real charges. Misdemeanors and brand-new felonies are filed with the Circuit Court, 420 West C Street, Basin, WY 82410, 307-568-2367. Some hearings take place in Lovell, at 355 East 5th Street, Lovell, WY 82431.
A felony that's bound over moves to District Court, which shares the Basin building. Its clerk is at 307-568-2381, and you look up its files in person at that office. Prosecutors can add or drop counts after the arrest, so trust the court file over the booking sheet.
↑ Back to the question list8. Will the court give them a free lawyer?
It might. During the first court hearing, the judge will ask if the person plans to hire their own attorney. If they can't afford one, the judge checks their income and can assign a public defender. Someone sitting in jail with no cash available is assumed to qualify (W.S. 7-6-106). The state public defender's headquarters is at 316 West 22nd Street, Cheyenne, WY 82002, 307-777-7519.
The County and Prosecuting Attorney's office files state charges. You can reach it at 307-568-2436. Hiring a private attorney is always an option, too.
↑ Back to the question list9. When can I visit at the Big Horn County Detention Center?
All visits are face to face and go by housing pod. The weekly schedule:
- Tuesdays, 12:30 to 4:00 p.m.
- Thursdays, 5:30 to 9:00 p.m.
- Saturdays, 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
Every pod gets a 30-minute window. Book a spot by calling 307-568-9311 a full day or more before, because anyone who didn't call ahead won't be let in. Up to two adults may come per visit. Show up 10 minutes before your time. When more than six visitors arrive, each pod's visit is cut to 15 minutes. A Tuesday or Thursday visitor can't also come that Saturday. For general advice, see our visiting tips.
↑ Back to the question list10. How can I send spending money to someone inside?
There are three ways to do it:
- In person: staff prefer money orders and will take cash. They won't take personal checks.
- On the internet: follow the deposit link on the detention page, then pick this county from the list.
- Through the mail: send a money order only. Checks and cash aren't allowed.
Read our deposit guide for the details. To see what inmates can buy, visit the commissary page.
↑ Back to the question list11. Can they call me from jail?
Yes. Phones sit in each pod, and a private company runs them. If you have a question about rates, call 800-844-6591. Letters from family get scanned and read on a device, not handed out on paper.
Calls are recorded, so talk about home and everyday things, not the case. To set up calls or messages, follow our calling guide and messaging page.
↑ Back to the question list12. What address do letters to Big Horn County inmates need?
Starting February 1, 2025, personal letters are sent to a scanning center in Arkansas instead of the jail. Mail that goes to Basin may bounce back to you. Write it exactly like this: Big Horn County Jail/JailATM.com, then the inmate's name, then PO Box 16120, Jonesboro, AR 72401. If you're unsure, phone 307-568-9311 before you write.
The local post office box is just for lawyers on the case: Legal Mail, the inmate's name, PO Box 47, Basin, WY 82410. Keep these rules in mind:
- Write your name and full return address on the outside, along with the inmate's name.
- Packages get returned.
- The limit is 5 photos and 10 printed pages.
- Leave out stickers, glitter, lipstick, perfume, stamps, blank paper and crayon or marker.
- Books and magazines need an okay from jail command staff ahead of time.
People in jail may not write to victims, co-defendants or other inmates. Our letter guide has more.
↑ Back to the question list13. How do they get their wallet and keys back?
At booking, deputies list and store what the person had on them, like a phone, cash or keys. It all goes back to them when they leave. If a family member needs something sooner, like the car keys, call 307-568-9311 and ask what to do. Bring a photo ID with you. Items kept as evidence are held by the officers until the case no longer needs them.
↑ Back to the question list14. Who looks after their health inside?
The jail has a nurse on staff full time. Tell the jail about health needs quickly, such as daily pills, a long-term illness or a fresh injury. Call 307-568-9311 and share the drug names, the amounts and how to reach their doctor. If you still have concerns, the Sheriff's Office takes calls at 307-568-2324.
↑ Back to the question list15. How can I learn about a Big Horn County warrant?
Deputies carry out warrants countywide, and each town's police handle warrants in their own town. To find out if one is out, phone the Sheriff's Office at 307-568-2324. Wyoming doesn't offer one warrant search for the whole state, so clerks will run a name for callers. If the warrant has a bond, ask the court that issued it how to pay. Turning yourself in with a lawyer next to you is the safest way to handle it. Another choice is asking the clerk for a new hearing date. The Circuit Court clerk is at 420 West C Street, Basin, WY 82410, 307-568-2367.
↑ Back to the question list16. Where can I learn the next hearing date?
Look at the release paperwork first, since the date is usually printed there. For state charges, the circuit clerk can help at 307-568-2367, and the felony clerk in District Court at 307-568-2381. Each town court sets its own schedule:
- Basin: Thursdays at 1 p.m., 307-568-3331.
- Greybull: first and third Wednesdays, 307-765-2308.
- Lovell: at Town Hall, 307-548-6551.
- Byron: first Wednesday at 3 p.m., 307-548-7490.
See our court guide for what each hearing is for.
↑ Back to the question list17. Is the person being held on a federal case?
They could be held right here in Basin. The jail keeps prisoners under contract for the U.S. Marshals (both the Wyoming and Montana districts), the Bureau of Indian Affairs and the federal prison system. Before a federal trial, a judge holds a hearing to decide whether the person stays locked up (18 U.S.C. 3142). The Marshals know where their prisoners are. Their Casper office is at 111 South Wolcott, Room 138, Casper, WY 82601, 307-261-5411.
The federal court has clerk offices in Casper and Cheyenne, and the Casper office answers at 307-232-2620. Once a sentence is handed down, use the federal inmate locator with a name or a register number.
↑ Back to the question list18. What happens if immigration places a hold?
- ICE can send the jail a request called Form I-247A if it thinks a person may be deported.
- With that request, the person can be held up to 48 hours after they would otherwise be released (8 CFR 287.7(d)).
- ICE agents then collect the person and move them to an immigration center.
- Find them with the ICE Online Detainee Locator. Enter their A-number and home country, or their full legal name and home country.
This area is covered by ICE in Casper, 150 E. B Street, Room 1014, Casper, WY 82601, 307-261-6590. Since 2025, Wyoming law forbids local rules that block teamwork with immigration agents (W.S. 9-25-102).
↑ Back to the question list19. How do I follow someone into state prison?
After a felony sentence to prison, the Wyoming Department of Corrections takes over. Men usually start at the Wyoming Medium Correctional Institution, where new male prisoners are sorted and assessed. Type a last name or an inmate number into the WDOC locator.
It lists people serving prison time or under probation or parole. It won't show county jail inmates. A status of "In Custody" might mean they're at a hospital, a courthouse or a county jail for now. Each prison has its own page in our Wyoming prisons section. You can reach Corrections headquarters at 1934 Wyott Drive, Suite 100, Cheyenne, WY 82002, 307-777-7208.
↑ Back to the question list20. What happens when a Big Horn County teen is arrested?
In Wyoming, most kids who are picked up go home to a parent or another adult who can watch them. Keeping a child locked up takes a court order, or a real risk that they'll hurt someone or run away (W.S. 14-6-206). Police have to let parents know fast. A child who is kept gets a hearing in 48 hours, and weekends and holidays don't count toward that (W.S. 14-6-209).
District Court hears youth cases. Those files are private, and hearings are closed to the public unless someone asks for a jury trial. To find out where your child is, phone the Sheriff's Office at 307-568-2324.
↑ Back to the question list21. Who arrested them in Big Horn County?
Besides its nine towns, the county includes small places such as Emblem, Hyattville, Otto and Shell. These agencies can make an arrest:
- Sheriff's Office, 307-568-2324, or 800-500-2324 toll-free inside Wyoming. Deputies patrol rural areas and handle policing for Byron, Burlington and Frannie by contract. They serve Cowley, Deaver and Manderson as well.
- Basin Police Department, 202 South 3rd Street, Basin, WY 82410, 307-568-2341.
- Greybull Police Department, at Town Hall, 24 South 5th St, Greybull, WY 82426, 307-765-9431.
- Lovell Police Department, 142 East 3rd Street, Lovell, WY 82431, 307-548-2215, answered day and night.
- Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area rangers, 20 US Hwy 14A, Lovell, WY 82431, 307-548-5406.
- Wyoming Highway Patrol, dispatch 307-317-4524, for state highway arrests.
