The Chambers County Detention Facility is licensed to hold 136 inmates, though it frequently has to make room for many more, especially on weekends. Most city and county jails see a monthly turnover of at least 40% of inmates, another 30% every 90 days, and another 20% every six months. About 8-9% stay incarcerated between six and twelve months. Offenders who remain longer than a year are usually facing serious charges such as rape or murder. Since those cases take longer to prepare for trial, offenders arrested in Chambers County remain in custody at the Chambers County facility much longer.
Chambers County law enforcement agencies arrest and detain approximately 2,720 offenders per year.
The Chambers County Detention Facility, 105 Alabama Avenue West in LaFayette, is a medium- to maximum-security jail run by the Chambers County Sheriff’s Office. Sheriff Jeff Nelson leads the office, and Major Tommy Sims is the jail administrator. It holds about 136 men and women, from people charged with low-level misdemeanors to those awaiting trial for violent felonies. It also takes people arrested by the county’s municipal police departments in places like Lanett and Valley. Call the jail at (334) 864-4336; the sheriff’s office at 2 South LaFayette Street answers at (334) 864-4333.
The sheriff’s mobile app offers inmate search, most wanted photos, video visitation, and commissary links, and VINELink shows custody status too. People who think they have a warrant can check court records on Alacourt, then call the sheriff’s office or a lawyer before turning themselves in. After arrest, Rule 4.3 of the Alabama Rules of Criminal Procedure requires a first appearance before a judge without unnecessary delay and within 72 hours. Chambers County is part of the Fifth Judicial Circuit with Macon, Randolph, and Tallapoosa counties.
Money for the account and commissary goes through Inmate Canteen at team3.inmatecanteen.com or (715) 690-2965, with a $125 cap per transaction. Phones and messaging run through NCIC; set up a friends-and-family account at ncic.com. Calls cost $0.21–$0.25 a minute, plus a $3.00 setup fee. Send mail to the person’s full name and ID number, Chambers County Detention Facility, 105 Alabama Ave W, LaFayette, AL 36862. Write in blue or black ink. Books must be softcover and come directly from a publisher or retailer.
NCIC also runs visitation. Free on-site video visits are offered Monday–Friday, 9:00 a.m. to noon, and must be booked 24 hours ahead. Each person gets up to two visits a week, with two guests per session plus a third if that guest is a child under 6. Remote visits at videovisit.ncic.com run daily 9:00 a.m.–8:30 p.m. and cost $0.25 a minute plus a $2.00 connection fee. NCIC support: (800) 943-2189.
Most defendants in Alabama are entitled to bail. A judge may refuse it in capital cases when proof is evident or the presumption great. Under Aniah’s Law (2022), a judge may also hold someone without bail after a pretrial detention hearing on charges of murder, first-degree kidnapping, rape, sodomy, sexual torture, domestic violence, human trafficking, burglary, arson, or robbery, as well as aggravated child abuse, certain offenses against children, and terrorism. Amendment 1, approved by 81.6% of voters in May 2026, added solicitation, attempt, or conspiracy to commit murder and shooting into an occupied building or vehicle. Rule 7.2 recommends $10,000–$60,000 for a Class A felony, $5,000–$30,000 for Class B, $300–$6,000 for a Class A misdemeanor, and $1,000–$7,500 for DUI, but judges can set more or less. People may be released on personal recognizance, an unsecured appearance bond, or a secured bond paid in cash, backed by property, or written by a bail company. Call the jail for the bond amount.
No public bus serves the jail; most visitors drive. The Circle K at 57 Lafayette Street North and the Chevron at 407 Lafayette Street North are both close by. For a quick meal, try Jack’s Family Restaurant at 303 9th Avenue SW or Subway at 903 Lafayette Street South.
