While the Coosa County Jail has a licensed capacity of 72, it is often forced to make room for many more inmates, especially on weekends. City and county jails generally turn over at least 40% of their inmates each month, another 30% every 90 days, and another 20% every six months, and about 8-9% stay incarcerated six to twelve months. Those held longer than twelve months are usually charged with serious crimes such as murder or rape. Because those cases take longer to prepare for trial, offenders arrested in Coosa County are held at the Coosa County facility much longer.
Every year, approximately 1,440 offenders are arrested and detained by Coosa County law enforcement agencies.
The Coosa County Jail is a small, 72-bed lockup run by the Coosa County Sheriff’s Office at 296 School Street in Rockford, the county seat. It holds men and women arrested in Coosa County, including people awaiting trial and people serving county sentences. After booking, a person must be taken before a judge without unnecessary delay and within 72 hours of arrest under Alabama Rule of Criminal Procedure 4.3. Coosa County cases are heard in the 40th Judicial Circuit, which it shares with Clay County.
The Alabama Constitution guarantees bail for most defendants. Capital charges can be held without bail when the proof is evident or the presumption great, and Aniah’s Law (2022) lets a judge deny bail after a pretrial detention hearing for murder, first-degree kidnapping, rape, sodomy, sexual torture, domestic violence, human trafficking, burglary, arson, robbery, aggravated child abuse and certain crimes against children, and terrorism. Since May 2026, when voters approved Amendment 1 with 81.6% support, that list also covers solicitation, attempt, or conspiracy to commit murder and shooting into an occupied building or vehicle. Judges start from the Rule 7.2 schedule (Class A felony $10,000–$60,000; Class B $5,000–$30,000; Class A misdemeanor $300–$6,000; DUI $1,000–$7,500) but may go higher or lower. Bond can be posted as cash with the Circuit Clerk (Monday–Friday, 8 a.m.–4 p.m.), through a professional bonding company, or as a property bond, and an appeal bond is available after sentencing. Each charge from a separate incident also needs a $35 money order or cashier’s check made out to the Coosa County Circuit Clerk. A judge may also allow release on personal recognizance or an unsecured appearance bond.
Visits take place on Saturdays by housing block: A Block 7–9 a.m., B Block 9–11 a.m., C Block noon–2 p.m., and D Block 2–3 p.m. A person must be in custody for a week before visits begin, and each inmate gets two 15-minute visits a week from people on their approved list. Bring ID and expect to be wanded. Children under 10 need special permission, and anyone under 16 must come with an adult. No halter tops, short shorts or see-through blouses. No public bus serves Rockford, so visitors drive; Delta Express at 937 US-231 has fuel, and Triple R Cafe (9535 US-231) and El Vaqueros 2 Mex Grill (9712 US-231) are close by for a meal.
