See who is currently in custody by searching the roster with the inmate search tool.
Inmates who are sentenced to less than one year serve their sentence here in the county. Those who get a longer sentence go to the Alabama State Prison System or the Federal Bureau of Prisons.
Everything you need to stay in contact is on this page, including the visitation schedule, how to fund an inmate’s account, send mail, receive phone calls, use voicemail, email and text, rent a tablet, post bail, and order commissary.
The jail ID or booking number is worth saving, since it’s needed for mail and other services. If you can’t find it online, call Jackson County Jail at 256-574-1884.

Even though the Jackson County Jail is licensed for 212 inmates, it is often forced to accommodate many more, especially on weekends. In most city and county jails, at least 40% of the population turns over each month, another 30% every 90 days, and another 20% every six months. About 8-9% stay incarcerated between six and twelve months. Offenders who stay longer than a year are usually facing serious charges like rape or murder, and because those cases take longer to prepare for trial, anyone arrested in Jackson County on such charges remains in the Jackson County facility much longer.
Approximately 4,240 offenders are arrested and detained every year by Jackson County law enforcement agencies.
Jackson County Jail in Scottsboro, Alabama is a medium-security detention center that houses inmates who are awaiting trial or sentencing. Built between 1906 and 1907 by the F.B. Hull Construction Company and the Pauly Jail Building Company, it originally cost $22,000 to build and stands 64 feet tall.
The Jackson County Jail at 545 Parks Avenue in Scottsboro is operated by the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office Jail Division. It can hold 208 people and averages about 155 on a given day. Along with county arrestees, it houses prisoners for municipal police departments including Scottsboro, Hollywood, and Bridgeport. People here are either waiting for trial or serving sentences of under one year. A staff of 38 full-time officers works four 12-hour shifts, and Southern Health Partners provides nursing and physician care under contract. The jail’s direct line is (256) 574-1884, and the sheriff’s office at 102 East Laurel Street answers non-emergency calls at (256) 574-2610.
The sheriff posts an inmate roster that lists current inmates and anyone released in the last 48 hours. The site also keeps a most wanted list. Court cases are searchable on Alacourt. If you learn there is a warrant for you, contact the sheriff’s office or an attorney before turning yourself in.
All visits here are by video through GettingOut. Free on-site sessions are held at the jail Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.; each lasts 30 minutes, allows two guests, and each person may have two a week. Paid remote visits from a phone or computer are offered daily 9 a.m.–8:30 p.m. and must be scheduled a day ahead at gettingout.com (customer service (866) 516-0115). You will need a GettingOut account and a government-issued photo ID. Minors come with a parent or legal guardian, and the dress code bans shorts, sleeveless or low-cut tops, hats, and heels over one inch.
Jackson County is its own judicial district, the 38th Judicial Circuit. Alabama Rule of Criminal Procedure 4.3 calls for an initial appearance before a judge without unnecessary delay and within 72 hours of arrest. The state constitution guarantees bail to most defendants; capital charges are the traditional exception when proof is evident, and Aniah’s Law (2022) lets judges hold people without bail after a detention hearing for murder, first-degree kidnapping, rape, sodomy, sexual torture, domestic violence, human trafficking, burglary, arson, robbery, aggravated child abuse, certain offenses against children, and terrorism. In May 2026 voters approved Amendment 1 (81.6% yes), adding solicitation, attempt, or conspiracy to commit murder and shooting into an occupied building or vehicle. The Rule 7.2 schedule recommends, for example, $5,000–$30,000 for a Class B felony and $1,000–$7,500 for DUI, and judges may go above or below it. Release may be on personal recognizance, an unsecured appearance bond, or a secured bond in cash, property, or through a licensed bondsman. The jail takes cash, cashier’s checks, money orders, and in some cases credit cards, but not personal checks.
Mail goes to the person’s full name and inmate ID, Jackson County Jail, 545 Parks Avenue, Scottsboro, AL 35768, with your name and return address in the top left corner in blue or black ink. Plain photographs (no Polaroids) and pre-metered postcards are fine; glitter, confetti, postage stamps, musical cards, colored ink, and packages are not, and softcover books must come new from a publisher or retailer. The jail has zero tolerance for mail violations. Deposits can be made at the lobby kiosk (cash, debit, or credit), online through JailATM or GettingOut, by phone at (877) 810-0914, or by mailed money order. GettingOut also runs the phones, with in-state calls at about 25 cents a minute.
No fixed-route bus serves the jail; most visitors drive. Exxon at 802 S Broad St and Shell at 502 W Willow St are both nearby. For something to eat, Sonic Drive-In is at 824 S Broad St, and Payne’s Sandwich Shop and Soda Fountain is at 101 E Laurel St.

There are FOUR options for putting money on an inmate's books:
Option 1 - Dropping Money at the Jail
Bring money to the jail in person.
Either the jail personnel will process the Inmate Account payment or you will use a Jail ATM self-serve kiosk in the lobbies that accepts cash, debit or credit cards.
Option 2 - Deposit Inmate Money Online
Jackson County Jail uses Jail ATM to process all online deposits to an inmate's account. The company charges you a small fee for doing so, but the fee probably isn't as much as gas and parking would cost to take it to the jail in person.
Option 3 - Mail the Inmate Deposit to the Jail
Mailing a deposit takes more time to process than the other methods but can be done if you live too far away to bring it in person and you don't have a debit/credit card for online deposits. Never send cash. Always send a Money Order from the US Post Office, a reputable bank or Western Union. Call the Jackson County Jail first as they may want you to do this online or at the jail kiosk instead.
Make the Money Order out to the payee the jail names (check with the jail first) and put their Inmate ID# in memo section of the Money Order. Never mail cash or a personal check.
