Arrested in Tuskegee or Macon County: the person may not be held where you expect
Macon County is home to Tuskegee, Shorter, Notasulga and Franklin. Adults arrested here are booked through the Macon County Jail on County Road 10 in Tuskegee, but since mid-2025 the building has had repair and security problems, and many people held for more than a short time have been sent to jails in other counties.
That makes the first phone call more important than usual. Check Macon County on VINELink, then call the sheriff's office at 334-724-0669 and ask exactly where the person is housed. There's no Macon County roster on the web; VINELink covers Macon instead.
Before calling a bail agent, use Macon County Inmate Search. The Macon County Jail is listed at 246 County Road 10, Tuskegee, AL 36083, the same complex as the sheriff's office. Our listing marks the jail as closed for regular housing.
1. Where is the Macon County Jail, and is it open?
Booking can still start in Tuskegee, but the person may be moved within hours or days to a contract jail in another county.
Start with the sheriff's office at 334-724-0669. Macon staff can tell you where the person is and connect you with that jail.
↑ Back to the question list2. Who arrested them in Macon County?
- Macon County Sheriff's Office: 334-724-0669
- Shorter's town police can be reached through its court line, 334-727-9190.
Tuskegee University students and I-85 drivers through Shorter are both common arrests. The arresting agency decides which court and bond apply, so ask them who set the bond.
↑ Back to the question list3. Will the Macon roster show them?
Check Macon County on VINELink first and call the sheriff's office, which connects to the holding jail, at 334-724-0669; booking is at 246 County Road 10, Tuskegee, AL 36083.
Maybe, maybe not. Macon County on VINELink is a start, but with transfers, the phone is more reliable. If the sheriff says the person is in another county, search that county's roster too.
Ask for the booking number and the name of the holding jail. You'll need both for money, mail and visits.
↑ Back to the question list4. I can't find them anywhere. What next?
Booking takes hours, and a transfer adds more time before a name appears on the new county's list. Call 334-724-0669; give Macon staff the legal name and birthday, and ask: Were they booked in Tuskegee? Were they moved, and to which county? Were they released, or taken to a hospital?
If the answer is another county, call that jail directly and repeat the questions.
↑ Back to the question list5. Could Tuskegee police have just written a ticket?
Small offenses and traffic cases in Tuskegee and Shorter often end with a citation into municipal court rather than a jail booking. A ticketed person is free and won't be on any roster. Missing that court date leads to a warrant. Macon officers book DUI, felony and domestic violence arrests.
↑ Back to the question list6. How soon does a Macon judge review the arrest?
For an arrest without a warrant, Tuskegee courts have two days for a judge or magistrate to find probable cause; if they don't, Macon must release the person at the cheapest scheduled amount or on their word, other than for charges Alabama lets judges hold without bail.
If arrested on a warrant and unable to make bond, the person must appear within three days. A domestic violence arrest can hold up bail for one day, until a judge sets it. Being housed in another county doesn't stop these clocks.
↑ Back to the question list7. How is bail handled for a Macon County arrest?
Ask the sheriff for the bond amount and any holds. Most Macon warrants use Alabama's bond schedule; for instance, Macon's schedule figure for second-degree robbery, a Class B felony, is anywhere from $5,000 up to $30,000. A judge can change the amount.
Choices are full cash (returned at the end if every Tuskegee court date is kept), a licensed bonding company (fee kept), a property bond, or release on signature. Aniah's Law lets the court deny bail after a hearing for certain violent crimes. Amendment 1 now lets courts deny bail for attempted murder and for firing into a lived-in vehicle or dwelling. That change started on May 19, 2026. See our Macon bail help.
↑ Back to the question list8. Where in Tuskegee do I pay a bond?
The circuit clerk is at 101 East Rosa Parks Avenue, Suite 300, Tuskegee, 334-724-2614, open weekdays until 4:30. Call first to make sure you're paying the right office, especially if the person is housed out of county. City bonds may be handled by the Tuskegee or Shorter court.
Macon payers also owe the state's 3.5% charge on the bond's value (a Tuskegee misdemeanor never below $100, a felony never below $150) and $35 more. Bondsman premiums are separate.
↑ Back to the question list9. Which court in Macon County hears the case?
District Court and Circuit Court sit in Tuskegee; the circuit clerk, 334-724-2614, has the dates. The 5th Circuit district attorney prosecutes Macon cases from its Tuskegee office, 334-724-2604.
City courts: Tuskegee Municipal Court at 302 South Main Street; Shorter Municipal Court, 334-727-9190; Notasulga's court at Town Hall, 334-257-1454 (the town extends into Lee County). See the Macon court guide.
↑ Back to the question list10. How do Macon families get a free defense lawyer?
At the first appearance, the person asks the Macon judge for appointed counsel. The judge names a lawyer.
Whatever jail they're housed in records calls and video, so case talk should be saved for the lawyer.
↑ Back to the question list11. How can I find out the Macon charges?
Ask the sheriff's office or the Tuskegee clerk for the charge list and case number. A felony in Alabama can mean prison; misdemeanor time can't pass a year. Tuskegee's clerk lets the public read files free at the counter; Alacourt's site charges.
↑ Back to the question list12. Who handles a medical need if they've been moved?
Call the sheriff at 334-724-0669 and ask which jail holds the person and how to report a medical need. Then call that jail's supervisor, giving the condition, prescriptions and pharmacy. If you fear self-harm, say so on both calls.
↑ Back to the question list13. How do visits work for someone from Macon County?
Visits depend on where the person is housed. Ask the sheriff's office which jail has them, then follow that jail's rules. Many Alabama jails offer video visits from home or from a lobby screen, booked ahead.
Since housing changes, call the sheriff's office at 334-724-0669 or look online for current visiting times. See our Macon visitation guide and remote visit help.
↑ Back to the question list14. How do calls and money work for Macon inmates housed elsewhere?
Phone, message and deposit systems follow the holding jail, not Macon. Once you know where they are, open a prepaid account with that jail's provider. Money sent to the wrong system can take time to recover, so confirm first.
Guides: calls, money, messages, tablets, commissary.
↑ Back to the question list15. Where do I mail letters, and what about their belongings?
Confirm the current jail first; Macon mail goes to that jail's address with the inmate's name and booking number. Never send cash. See our Macon mail guide.
Ask the sheriff where the person's property is being held. Belongings taken at booking in Tuskegee may travel with them or stay behind.
↑ Back to the question list16. How long does release take once bond is paid?
After bond posts, release happens from wherever they're housed, which may be in another county. Ask where to pick them up before you drive.
↑ Back to the question list17. Leaving the Tuskegee jail for state prison: what to expect
Prison sentences longer than a year are handled under the Alabama Department of Corrections. At first, most people stay in the Tuskegee jail while ADOC schedules the move, sometimes for weeks. Then, they are taken to an intake prison for check-in. Classification staff screen new arrivals after checking health and mental health care, security level and gang connections. Their final stop is a prison that matches those results.
For their location, try the ADOC inmate search. The Alabama prison page explains every state prison.
↑ Back to the question list18. Is there a Macon County warrant?
Macon County warrants can be checked through the sheriff 334-724-0669); Tuskegee police handle city ones. A lawyer can arrange a planned surrender, and can ask where the person will be housed.
Someone ready to surrender reports to the county jail, 246 County Road 10, Tuskegee, AL 36083, and its phone is 334-724-0669 for bond questions.
↑ Back to the question list19. What happens to a Macon teen under 18?
Minors stay out of adult jails and off the roster. Children arrested in Macon are screened by juvenile probation intake at the courthouse; the clerk at 334-724-2614 can connect families. Intake shares the Tuskegee courthouse at 101 East Rosa Parks Avenue, Suite 300, Tuskegee, AL 36083. Tuskegee intake may return the child to family, try an informal fix, or file a petition. With no youth lockup inside Macon, a child who must be held goes to a regional center, and the Macon juvenile judge must hear the detention question within 72 hours.
↑ Back to the question list20. Who handles federal charges from Macon County?
These arrests start with agencies like the FBI, the ATF and the U.S. Marshals Service. Macon County falls under the Middle District's Eastern Division, so trials happen at the Opelika courthouse: G.W. Andrews Federal Building and U.S. Courthouse, 701 Avenue A, Opelika, AL 36801. Staff are not in Opelika full time; call the Montgomery clerk at 334-954-3600. Often the next weekday, the defendant sees a U.S. magistrate judge. Release is not set from a chart in this system. Applying the Bail Reform Act of 1984, the federal judge hears a release hearing and settles if they stay locked up. A pretrial services officer interviews the person and reports to the court.
Try Macon County on VINELink first; there the hold may show. Or call the Middle District's Marshals Service at 334-922-6960 (1 Church Street, Suite A-100, Montgomery, AL 36104). Until sentencing, the Marshals may hold the person in local jails by contract. After a federal sentence, the person goes into BOP custody when a bed opens. Locate them through the BOP inmate locator.
↑ Back to the question list21. A relative in the Tuskegee jail has an ICE detainer. What happens next?
- Jail fingerprints are checked against U.S. records that ICE uses. If ICE is interested, it may file a detainer with the jailers.
- That form asks the jail to keep them up to 48 hours after the normal release. That's two straight days, counted from release time.
- Even after bail paid, this hold stays on file.
- Immigration officers can arrive at the jail inside those 48 hours. When ICE stays away, that means release when the hold ends.
- For questions, try the New Orleans field office: 181 James Drive W, St. Rose, LA 70087, 504-318-2360.
- The agency picks the next facility.
- Search the ICE locator with the A-number and birth country. Without an A-number, enter their full name, home country, and birth date.
22. Mugshots from the Tuskegee jail: who can get one
Newsrooms wanting a booking photo may call the sheriff's office, 334-724-0669, and ask. ICE releases mugshots only through an ICE FOIA request, if approved. A federal mugshot isn't public, for the press or anyone else. Federal policy limits sharing to three situations: for a wanted fugitive, when there is an immediate safety need, or to aid the search or warn the public.
↑ Back to the question list23. A caller promises to move my person back to Tuskegee for a fee. Legit?
Be very careful. Transfers confuse families, and scammers use that confusion. Real Macon officials won't phone you demanding gift cards, wire transfers or payment-app money. Hang up and call the sheriff at 334-724-0669. Pay only official court offices, the holding jail's deposit service, or a bondsman you checked yourself.
↑ Back to the question list24. Before setting out for a Macon jail, whom do I phone?
Call the Macon sheriff's office at 334-724-0669 to confirm where the person is, then that holding jail. For court dates and bond paperwork, the circuit clerk is at 334-724-2614.
