The Apache County Jail is licensed for 150 inmates, but it often has to make room for many more offenders, especially on weekends. Most city and county jails in Arizona turn over at least 40% of their population monthly, 30% more every 90 days, and 20% more every six months. Around 8-9% stay incarcerated for six to twelve months. Inmates held longer than twelve months are usually facing serious charges like rape or murder. Because those cases take longer to prepare for trial, offenders arrested in Apache County remain in custody at one of the Apache County facilities much longer.
Under Arizona’s court rules, the presumption is that a defendant is released on their own recognizance. Judges only set bail when that won’t ensure the person returns to court or won’t protect public safety. Many people arrested in Arizona are released without paying anything.
Every year, Apache County law enforcement agencies arrest and detain approximately 3,260 offenders.
The Apache County Jail is run from the Apache County Sheriff’s Office at 370 South Washington Street in St. Johns, the county seat in Arizona’s far northeastern corner. The Sheriff’s Office runs the jail, and the main line, (928) 337-4321 (or toll-free (800) 352-1850), is the place to start. Like every Arizona county jail, it holds adults of all genders who are waiting for their cases to move through court, people serving county jail sentences of up to one year, and people already sentenced to prison who are waiting to be transferred to the Arizona Department of Corrections, Rehabilitation and Reentry. The Sheriff’s Office posts a list of inmates currently in custody on its website at apachecountyaz.gov/Sheriff; if you can’t find someone there, call the main number.
After an arrest anywhere in the county, the person is brought here to be booked. Under Arizona Rule of Criminal Procedure 4.1, they must see a judge for an initial appearance within 24 hours of the arrest, and if that hearing doesn’t happen in time, they must be released. At that hearing the judge decides on release. Arizona’s Rule 7.2 starts from the presumption that a defendant goes home on their own recognizance, and a judge adds bail or other conditions only when they’re needed to make sure the person comes back to court or to protect a victim or the community, so many people leave without paying anything. When money is required, it may be an unsecured bond, a cash bond, a secured appearance bond, or a bond written by a licensed bail bond agent. The Arizona Constitution (Article 2, Section 22) lets a judge deny bail only after a hearing, in cases such as capital offenses or certain serious sexual offenses where the proof is evident or the presumption great, a felony committed while the person was already out on bail for another felony, or when the person poses a substantial danger and no conditions would protect the community. If you think there may be a warrant for you or a family member, look up court cases through the Arizona Judicial Branch’s Public Access to Court Information at apps.azcourts.gov/publicaccess, then talk with the Sheriff’s Office or an attorney before turning yourself in.
Visits are by video through Securus Technologies. Free on-site video visits take place on lobby terminals on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., except during the daily lockdown from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m., and must be scheduled 24 hours ahead. Remote visits from home cost a fee and run seven days a week in three windows: 9:00–11:20 a.m., 4:00–5:50 p.m. and 8:00–9:50 p.m. You can book at the lobby terminal, online through Securus, or by calling (877) 578-3658. Every visitor fills out a Visitation Information Sheet first. Adults need a valid government-issued photo ID. No more than two visitors may come at once (three if one is a child under 6), and a child under 18 must come with a parent or legal guardian who is related to the inmate. People on probation or parole, people with pending criminal matters and anyone under the influence can’t visit, and suggestive or provocative clothing isn’t allowed. Call ahead to confirm.
St. Johns has no public bus service to the jail, so most visitors drive. For fuel, there’s a Circle K at 61 Commercial Street and a Maverik at 1280 West Cleveland Street. For a quick meal, try Champs Chicken at 1135 West Cleveland Street or the La Carreta D Luz food truck at 435 West Cleveland Street.
Write to an inmate using their full name and inmate ID number at Apache County Sheriff’s Office, PO Box 518, St. Johns, AZ 85936. Use blue or black ink, and have newspapers, magazines and paperback books shipped directly from the publisher. Deposits have been handled by Access Corrections, online, by phone at (866) 345-1884, or at the lobby kiosk, and commissary through Access Securepak. Phone calls and tablets go through Securus. Apache County Jail uses Securus Video Connect for Remote Inmate Video Visitation.

What is the Cost of a Remote Video Visit?
Costs vary and are subject to change, but generally visits range from $5.00 to $15.00 for a 15 to 30 minute online or on-site video visit.
How do you know if your Inmate will be available during the time you schedule?
The Securus system knows the times that Apache County Jail inmates are available for remote video visits.
It will not allow you to schedule a visit with your inmate if they are not available or the video visitation kiosk(s) in the jail are booked already.
Once you schedule a visit with your inmate they will be notified of the date and time of the visit.
