Searching the St. Johns roster

Open Apache County Inmate Search and look up the name. Write down the booking number.

Back to questions ↑

The person was arrested on the Navajo Nation. Will they be on this list?

Probably not. If Navajo Nation police arrested a tribal member on tribal land, the person goes to a Navajo Nation jail, such as the ones in Window Rock or Chinle. Those are separate from the county. Call Navajo police in Window Rock at 928-871-6111 or in Chinle at 928-674-2111. A non-Native person may be handed to county or federal officers.

Back to questions ↑

Why don't I see them yet?

Long drives and small staff mean booking can lag. Phone 928-337-4321 and spell the legal name; have the birthday ready too.

Back to questions ↑

Could it have ended with a ticket?

For a misdemeanor, an Arizona officer can release someone with a notice to appear in court. Domestic violence arrests aren't handled this way.

Back to questions ↑

How long until a St. Johns judge sees them?

Arizona's limit is one day, 24 hours, from arrest to that first hearing. The judge sets release terms, often by video from St. Johns.

Back to questions ↑

How is release decided in Apache County?

Arizona starts by releasing people on their own promise. A judge may add a bond or other terms when needed, while the gravest felonies can mean holding the person pending trial once a hearing is held. See the Apache County bail guide.

Back to questions ↑

Paying a bond in St. Johns

Call 928-337-4321 to learn the amount and how to pay. A bail agent can post for a fee. Holds can delay release.

Back to questions ↑

Which court hears the case?

Felony files land in Apache County Superior Court in St. Johns. Justice courts in St. Johns, Springerville, Chinle and Puerco hear misdemeanors. Navajo Nation cases go to tribal courts. See the Apache County court steps.

Back to questions ↑

How do visits work at the St. Johns jail?

Video sessions from a home device or a jail screen need an approved account. Call the jail or check online for the schedule. See Apache County visitation and remote visits.

Watch for scams

Someone promising a fast release in exchange for gift cards or a wire is running a con. Real money goes to St. Johns jail staff, the court clerk, or a licensed bondsman.

Back to questions ↑

What should I confirm before driving to St. Johns?

Call the Apache County Sheriff's Office at 928-337-4321 to confirm that the person is in the jail, plus the booking number and the bond.

What if the FBI brought the charge?

Federal agents from agencies like the IRS and the Secret Service make federal arrests, sometimes with deputies. Serious crimes on tribal land, such as major assaults, can be charged in federal court instead of county court. U.S. charges from St. Johns belong to the Prescott Division of the District of Arizona; its judges sit in Flagstaff, 123 North San Francisco Street, Suite 200, Flagstaff, AZ 86001. Clerk staff in Flagstaff answer at 928-774-2566; filings go to Phoenix or Tucson, not Flagstaff. Often by the next weekday, the defendant appears before a magistrate judge. Different from the county, a federal judge won't use a fixed dollar figure. A release hearing under federal bail law settles if they stay locked up. Expect a short interview from pretrial services; the judge sees the answers.

While it's open, the Marshals often house federal prisoners in local jails. Check the local roster, where the hold may be noted. This district's Marshals staff in Flagstaff can tell you where they are: 928-213-0135, 123 North San Francisco Street, Suite 101, Flagstaff, AZ 86001. Following sentencing to prison, the person transfers into federal prison (the BOP). Track them through the federal inmate locator.

ICE hold: what to expect at the jail

  • ICE learns about an arrest from booking prints staff send. Then ICE might file a detainer (Form I-247A).
  • Through the I-247A, ICE wants the St. Johns jail to delay the release by up to 48 hours. A holiday does not freeze the count.
  • Even with bail paid, this hold remains in place.
  • Immigration officers can collect them at the St. Johns jail during the hold. No pickup by the deadline? At that point the request has expired and the jail must let them leave.
  • Families can follow the detainee online through the ICE detainee locator, using the A-number plus their birth country. No A-number handy? The second search form takes the person's full name with country of birth and DOB.
  • Write or call the Phoenix field office of ICE: 2035 North Central Avenue, Phoenix, AZ 85004, or by phone at 602-257-5900.
  • Their next facility is ICE's call.
Back to questions ↑

How will the move from the St. Johns jail to the ADCRR happen?

Felony prison terms are handled through the ADCRR. At first, the person remains in the county jail while the ADCRR finds a bed, sometimes for months. The transfer ends at intake, and there new arrivals get processed. There, officers review security risk, health and mental health needs, and any gang affiliation. The last move is a prison that suits their rating.

To follow the move, use the ADCRR inmate search. The state prison guide has each unit.

Back to questions ↑

Who may request an Apache County mugshot, and how?

The sheriff's office at 928-337-4321 takes news requests for mugshots not posted online. ICE photos are released just through ICE's online FOIA request, though release isn't promised. Federal mugshots are not released to reporters or the public. Once in a while, the Marshals Service shares one: for an escaped prisoner, when publishing it supports the search or a warning to the public or for urgent community safety.

Back to questions ↑

Which Apache County police agency arrested them?

Concho, Vernon, Alpine, Greer and Sanders are patrolled by sheriff's deputies.
