Cochise County Main Jail Inmate Bail & Bonds

The county lists the main jail in Bisbee, 520-432-7540, and two spots it calls temporary holding facilities: Sierra Vista, 520-803-3858, and Willcox, 520-384-7070. The county calls Bisbee its main jail. Look up the name through Cochise County Inmate Search, then phone Bisbee first. Staff there can say where the person is and who has them.

Voters approved a half-cent sales tax in November 2025, and county officials aimed in early 2026 for a move-in around late 2028 or early 2029. Until then the old buildings keep operating. The project coordinator has described the current jail as overcrowded. For you, that means calls can be busy and moves between buildings can happen. Check where the person sleeps before you drive.

Arizona Rule of Criminal Procedure 4.1 requires a first appearance before a magistrate within 24 hours of arrest, or release. In Cochise County, justices of the peace run initial appearances. The judge decides if bail is allowed and what conditions apply (Rule 7.4). A person held on a misdemeanor bond must have the terms re-checked within 10 days of that first hearing.

Amy J. Hunley is the elected clerk of the superior court. Her Bisbee office is at 100 Quality Hill Road and her Sierra Vista office at 100 Colonia de Salud, Suite 200. The clerk keeps felony case files and collects court money. A first hearing can be in a justice court, so you may need to phone both places to follow one arrest.

Arizona law (A.R.S. 13-3967) lets a judge free someone on their signature or set a cash figure, and extra rules may come with it: living with a named adult, travel limits, reporting, or no weapons or alcohol. The judge weighs the charge, the proof, past court record, work, family, and what the victim says. For felonies, good behavior is always required.

Yes, as long as the agent has a current Arizona license; look it up on the state insurance department. Under A.A.C. R20-6-601, an agent may charge only the rate already on file with the state. Ask to see them. The agent must also keep your collateral separate and return it when the bond ends. Take a receipt that describes whatever you hand over.

Sometimes. Rules for real estate are set by the court that ordered the bail, and the county pages give none. Ask the clerk, 520-432-8600, whether the land has to be in Cochise County, how much of the home must be paid off, and if all owners have to sign.

Three things can cause it. The first appearance may not have happened yet. A hold from another agency may be on the file. Or the charge may be one the Arizona Constitution (art. 2, sec. 22) and A.R.S. 13-3961 treat as non-bailable when proof is strong, such as capital murder or a new felony committed while on bail. Call the Bisbee jail and ask which of the three applies.

At the opening hearing, say the family can't afford counsel; the judge may then assign one. The Cochise County Public Defender's Bisbee office is at 4 Ledge Avenue, third floor, 520-432-8440. Town police hand adults over to the county jail, and the file normally goes to the local justice court. The sheriff's main office, 520-432-9500, can point you to the arresting agency. The booking desk at 520-432-7554 will show which department took the person in.

Most likely a warrant goes out. State law requires the court to notify the bail agent and the surety by email, or mail if no email was given (A.R.S. 13-3973). The bonding company may return the person to the sheriff to end its risk (A.R.S. 13-3974). Call the justice court or the clerk right away, then a lawyer.

A Border Patrol or other federal arrest goes to the U.S. District Court for the District of Arizona, not to Bisbee's courts, so county bail amounts and bondsmen don't apply. The Tucson division handles most Cochise cases:

• A magistrate judge sees the person at Tucson federal courthouse, 405 West Congress Street, Tucson, AZ 85701 (clerk 520-205-4200), usually within a day or two.
• Pretrial services checks ties to the community and any record.
• Prosecutors may ask for detention, and then a hearing is held a few days later.

The county bond still pays off the state charge, but a detainer can delay the walk out the door. Under 8 CFR 287.7, ICE may ask the jail to hold someone up to 48 hours past release, counting weekends and holidays the count. Cochise County has a 287(g) warrant service agreement, which lets trained deputies serve ICE warrants on people already in the jail. On top of that, A.R.S. 11-1051 keeps any Arizona county from putting limits on immigration work.
