Arrested in Sierra Vista, Douglas or Bisbee: Cochise County help

Cochise County fills Arizona's southeast corner. Sierra Vista is its biggest city, Bisbee is the county seat, and Douglas sits on the Mexico line. State-charge arrests land in the Cochise County Jail in Bisbee. Look for them in Cochise County on VINELink, or call the sheriff's office at 520-432-9500. Cochise County doesn't post a roster online, so VINELink is the place to search.

Where is the Cochise County jail?

The Cochise County Jail is on Judd Drive in Bisbee, by the sheriff's headquarters. The jail desk is listed at 520-432-7540; when that line doesn't pick up, the sheriff's main number, 520-432-9500, can connect you. The sheriff also has district offices in Sierra Vista and Willcox, but ask before going there, since longer stays happen in Bisbee.

Why is the person missing from the list?

Douglas, Willcox and Benson are each about an hour or more from Bisbee. Officers finish reports, then drive. Booking follows. Call 520-432-9500 with the legal name and birthday handy. No sheriff record? Try the town police who made the arrest.

Back to questions ↑

Could they have gotten a ticket and gone home?

Yes, if the charge was a misdemeanor; Arizona officers may release with a notice to appear. Domestic violence arrests don't get that option.

Back to questions ↑

When will a Cochise judge see them?

Arizona rules set a 24-hour ceiling from arrest to that hearing. Cochise holds first appearances every day, many over a jail video link, where release rules get set.

Back to questions ↑

How is bail handled in Cochise County?

Arizona's rule is release on a promise unless a judge needs more. Extra terms might be a cash or surety bond, supervision, or staying away from a person. A few grave charges can bring detention after a hearing. Read our Cochise bail guide.

Back to questions ↑

Where is Bisbee jail bond paid?

Phone the sheriff at 520-432-9500 to get the amount and the accepted payment types. A bondsman may post it for a fee. Holds from other agencies or the federal government can keep someone in.

Back to questions ↑

Which Cochise court is handling it?

Felonies go to Cochise County Superior Court in Bisbee. Justice courts sit in Sierra Vista, Douglas, Benson, Willcox and Bisbee. Sierra Vista and Douglas also have city courts. Find hearing dates through Arizona's public court lookup. See the Cochise court steps.

Public defenders in Cochise County

Back to questions ↑

How do visits work at the Cochise jail?

Anyone under 18 goes to a youth detention center overseen by the juvenile court, not the sheriff. They won't show on the adult roster. See our Cochise juvenile page or call the sheriff's line for the court's number.

Back to questions ↑

Spotting bail fraud

If someone calls demanding gift cards or a wire transfer, it's a scam. Hang up and phone the sheriff directly.

Back to questions ↑

What should I confirm by phone before going to Bisbee?

Dial 520-432-9500, the Cochise County Sheriff's Office, and have the operator transfer you to detention staff, who can say whether the person remains in Bisbee and what the bond and booking number are.

Federal charges: court, bail and the jail

A federal case often begins after the DEA, the FBI, Homeland Security Investigations, and the Postal Inspection Service make an arrest. Troops arrested on Fort Huachuca might be held by the Army instead. Border arrests near Douglas or Naco often become federal cases. Federal hearings in these cases take place in the federal building in Tucson, 405 West Congress Street, Tucson, AZ 85701, under the District of Arizona's Tucson Division. For case questions, phone the clerk at 520-205-4200. Expect an interview from a pretrial services officer, whose report helps the judge. An initial appearance comes fast with a magistrate judge. No one uses a bail schedule for federal charges. A release hearing works out whether they go home, using federal bail law.

Try the sheriff's jail list, where a federal hold may show. Then try the Marshals Service for Arizona at 520-879-6900 (405 West Congress Street, Suite 2300, Tucson, AZ 85701). Meanwhile, U.S. Marshals often keep them in a nearby jail. Those given federal prison time later move out of the Bisbee jail and into a Bureau of Prisons site. Track them with the Bureau of Prisons search.

How do families follow an ICE detainer?

  • Jail prints get checked with national systems that ICE uses. ICE can then send a detainer with jail staff.
  • Through the I-247A, ICE wants the Bisbee jail to put off the person's release by no more than two days. Saturday doesn't pause the clock.
  • Paying the bond doesn't remove it.
  • Officers from ICE often collect them during the hold. If ICE never collects them, this should mean release.
  • This county falls under ICE's Phoenix field office; its phone is 602-257-5900, with its office at 2035 North Central Avenue, Phoenix, AZ 85004.
  • After the transfer, their name can be found on the detainee locator, searchable by the A-number and country of birth. People lacking the A-number can type in birth country, the day they were born, and both first and last names.
  • Where they are sent depends on ICE.
Back to questions ↑

Going to the ADCRR? How the transfer works

Arizona's prison system, the Department of Corrections, holds those given a felony prison term. They often wait in the Bisbee jail until the state has a bed. After that, the ADCRR moves them to a reception unit for check-in. Prison staff screen them after checking physical and emotional health, gang connections, and their risk level. Their last move is the prison that suits them.

The ADCRR inmate search lists where they are housed. The Arizona state prison page explains visits and mail.

Back to questions ↑

Are Cochise County booking photos released?

An ICE records request is the only way to get an immigration mugshot and it needs ICE approval. If an arrest photo hasn't been posted, press questions go through the sheriff's office at 520-432-9500. The federal government doesn't share mugshots with reporters or families. Media or family requests won't get one; the Marshals release a photo only for an escaped inmate or fugitive, for pressing public safety, or when posting it speeds an arrest or a warning to the public.

Back to questions ↑

Which Cochise County police department arrested them?

Tombstone and Huachuca City have small departments; if you can't reach it, the sheriff's line will help. Palominas, Naco, Elfrida, Sunsites and St. David are patrolled by deputies.
