The Ajo District Jail is licensed for 50 inmates, but it is often forced to make room for many more, especially on weekends. Most city and county jails in Arizona turn over their population on this schedule:
Offenders held longer than twelve months are usually facing serious charges like rape or murder. Because those cases take longer to prepare for trial, offenders arrested in Pima County remain in custody at one of the Pima County facilities much longer.
In Arizona, bail isn’t automatic. The court rules start from the presumption that a defendant is released on their own recognizance, and judges set bail only when that isn’t enough to ensure the person returns to court or to protect public safety. Many people arrested in Arizona are released without paying anything.
Every year, approximately 54,240 offenders are arrested and detained by Pima County law enforcement agencies.
The Ajo District Jail is the Pima County Sheriff’s Department’s jail in the far western part of the county, at 1249 W. Ajo Well Road, Ajo, AZ 85321. The phone number is (520) 387-8511. It serves Ajo and the surrounding desert communities, more than 100 miles from the main jail in Tucson. People held here may later be moved to the Pima County Adult Detention Complex, so call the Ajo jail first to confirm where your loved one is right now. Anyone arrested must see a judge within 24 hours, as Arizona Rule of Criminal Procedure 4.1 requires. Most local cases go through the Ajo Justice Court at 111 La Mina Avenue, which you can reach at (520) 387-7684 on weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Arizona courts start from a presumption of release on the person’s own recognizance. A judge adds bail or other conditions only when they’re needed to make sure the person comes back to court or to keep the victim and the community safe, so many people are released without paying anything. Under the Arizona Constitution, a judge can deny bail only after a hearing, in limited cases such as capital offenses, certain serious sexual offenses, a new felony committed while out on bail for another felony, or when someone is a substantial danger and no conditions would protect the public. When money is required, it can be a cash bond, a secured appearance bond or a bond through a licensed bail bond agent. Call the jail for the amount and how to pay it locally. Bonds for Pima County cases can also be posted any day at the Inmate Accounts Office in the lobby of the Tucson complex at 1270 W. Silverlake Road.

Before you send mail or money, call the Ajo jail to find out how to reach your loved one while they’re held there. Countywide, mail goes to the person’s full name and booking number at P.O. Box 951, Tucson, AZ 85702. Money can be deposited online through GTL, and video visits are booked through GettingOut. Once someone moves to Tucson, all of the main jail’s rules apply.
Most visitors drive. Ajo is roughly a two-hour drive west of Tucson on State Route 86. Shell at 429 N. 2nd Avenue and Circle K at 560 N. 2nd Avenue sell gas in town. For a meal, Ranger Cafe and Bistro is at 663 N. 2nd Avenue and Agave Grill is at 1051 Solana Avenue. Check their hours before you go, since both close between lunch and dinner.
After being arrested, the offender is brought to the Ajo District Jail for booking, which is the detailed process of identifying, classifying, deciding on charges, and whether the person will either be released on their own recognizance, allowed to be released on bail, or moved into the jail until their court date.
The first thing every newly arrested person must do is close their mouth. Everything an offender says may be used against them, so the best thing to do is remain silent when questioned about the arrest and what led to it.

How Do You Visit an Inmate in the Ajo District Jail? What is the Schedule?
VISITATION HOURS
Monday through Friday:
7:30 am - 11:00 am, 12:00 pm- 6:00 pm
Saturday and Sunday:
8:30 am - 11:00 am and 12:00 pm – 6:00 pm
Visitation is not available on Federal Holidays.
Both on-site and remote visitors will have to schedule their visits at least one to seven days in advance.
Visitations will be scheduled on a first come, first serve basis. We no longer accept same day walk-in visits.

Inmates who are on disciplinary lockdown are not permitted visitation.
There is no charge for lockers. You will be asked to properly secure your belongings prior to starting your visit.
Juvenile inmates cannot receive visits until after 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, but are allowed visits during regular hours on Saturday and Sunday.
LONG DISTANCE VISITORS
Special visits may be arranged, at the jail's convenience for family and friends who live outside a 100 mile radius of the jail and are only in town for a limited time.
These special visits are scheduled on a one-time basis and cannot be used as an additional visit.
The best way to request a special visit is to schedule a normal visit for the date and time you would like your visit to take place.
After you scheduled your visit, call the Jail Visits Hotline at (520)351-8114 and request that your scheduled visit be extended.

How Do You Deposit Money for an Inmate in the Ajo District Jail?
There are three choices for putting money on an inmate's books:
Choice 1 - Dropping Money at the Jail
Only U.S. bank checks and money orders will be accepted at the Inmate Account Window.
No personal checks.
There is no limit to the amount that may be deposited at this window.
U.S. paper currency is accepted for the value of deposit only. No change will be given.
No coins will be accepted for deposits.
Any funds released from an inmate account will be in the form of a debit card or money order.
Prior to releasing any funds, the inmate must submit a Money Transfer authorizing the release of funds from his/her account.
All deposits and disbursement transactions require the depositor or payee to show a valid government issued photo ID:
Choice 2 - Mailing a Deposit
Money Orders or U.S. Bank Checks (no personal checks) should be made out to the inmate and mailed to them at the jail.
These will be removed and deposited prior to the mail being passed on to the inmate.

The Ajo District Jail allows books to be mailed directly to the jail from a reputable source such as Amazon, Barnes & Noble or Books-A-Million. You can order them directly from your computer and have them shipped to the inmate at the address noted.
Books must NOT contain images or content that are considered excessively violent, pornographic or obscene. Any book that does not meet the Ajo District Jail standards will be disposed of.
