The Ajo District Jail maintains an average of 50 offenders in custody on any given day. The Ajo District Jail has a monthly turnover of 40% of their inmate population, another 30% turnover every 90 days, another 20% every six months, and approximately 10% stay incarcerated between six and twelve months. Every year Pima County law enforcement agencies arrest and detain approximately 54,240 offenders.

Ajo District Jail is located at 1249 W. Ajo Well Road, Ajo, Arizona 85321 and is part of the Ajo judicial district. It has a capacity of 50 inmates and is overseen by the Sheriff's department.
This facility is one of two jails in Pima county. It houses inmates awaiting trial or sentencing, those serving a sentence and those with mental health issues. It has been reported that the jail is overpopulated, and that as many as 100 inmates have been forced to sleep on temporary cots or on the floor.
The Ajo District Jail is the second location for the Pima County jail system. It provides additional housing for inmates, both male and female, that are arrested in the county. It operates under the Pima Sheriff’s Office and provides full care for all inmates when they are in detention, whether they are waiting for their trial or while they are serving a sentence.
Visits are not permitted until after the first court date, after which they will have the same privileges as other inmates and will be able to access regular video visits.
This facility uses tablets to access educational resources and courses such as a law library, GED courses, re-entry programs to ease the transition back out of the facility into their community. They also provide access to movies, music, and books with the full library, allow for photos to be shared with family outside the facility, and send messages to family and friends. Video visits are also conducted through the tablets, and one free call is available each week.

Mail is scanned and delivered to the tablet of the inmate or is checked for contraband and processed for final delivery to the correct facility and inmate. All mail must be a letter or postcard, contain no contraband, and cannot contain any adult content or images.
Phone service is provided through GTL and an account can be created at ConnectNetwork to fund calls from an inmate.
Once an inmate has completed their first court appearance and they have been officially assigned to their housing unit they will be able to access video visits, with onsite visits being free for the first 30 minute visit of the week, and $9.00 for each additional 30 minute visit with the limit being one visit per day. Visiting hours are Monday Through Friday 8:30am-6pm, Saturday and Sunday 8:30am-5pm and no visits on holidays.
Remote visits are 15 minutes and cost $0.25/minute. GTL’s GettingOut Visit Now provides video visits and an account can be made at that address to fund visits, as well as to access ways to contact the inmate via tablet.
Tablets provide access to video visits, messages, photos, educational content for GED, law books, reentry programs and more, as well as multimedia content for entertainment purposes.

There may be an automated method of looking them up by their name over the phone, or you may be directed to speak to someone at the jail. Sometimes the jail staff may ask you the offender’s date of birth to ensure privacy of the offender’s status.
Keep in mind that after an arrest, the information on an offender may not be publicly available for several hours.
If you don’t want to check up on an offender by calling the jail, you can also try looking up people recently booked online.
Ajo District Jail Booking Roster
After being arrested and taken into custody, and after being read their Miranda Rights, an offender will next be transported to the local police or department or the Sheriff’s Department in Pima County for booking.
Booking is very involved and requires multiple steps in the process, however, keep in mind that most attorneys will advise that an offender remain silent and not offer any additional information about the crime they have been arrested for because anything they do say may be recorded and may very well be used against them in court.
Booking includes having their photo (mugshot) and fingerprints taken, as well as being asked a lot of questions about their personal history and state of mind. If it’s a serious felony, their DNA may also be taken. They will also be checked for warrants in Pima County and other Arizona and USA jurisdictions.
If the offender was arrested for a DUI offense, and has refused a breathalyzer test, they may also be forced to have blood drawn by a doctor or nurse.
It is also very likely that the offender will undergo a humiliating full body search while in the nude. This includes bending over, spreading their cheeks in the direction of an officer, and coughing. They will also be walked through a metal detector or x-ray machine, like those used at an airport.
The arresting jurisdiction will ask about gang affiliations, tattoos, medical conditions, prescribed medication they are taking, recreational drugs they are on or addicted to, allergies, if they are suicidal, and other relevant information that will help with determining their cell assignment and special needs.
During the arrest and booking process an offender will also have all their personal property confiscated and held for either their release from jail, or with the offender’s approval, released to a friend or family member.
Personal property includes the clothing they are wearing, money, wallets, purses, cell phones, jewelry, body rings, earrings, watches, and even glasses if they are deemed a security risk. If they are allowed to keep their shoes or sneakers, the laces are removed.
At this point the offender will be allowed to make a free phone call to a person of their choice to notify them of their arrest, and/or arrange a bond or bail for their release.
If the offender is being detained and housed while awaiting arraignment, the Ajo District Jail will provide a jail garment and slip-on shoes, a blanket, sheets, soap, toothbrush, toothpaste, and a towel.
Often, before they are dressed in the jail outfit and brought to their housing location, they will be forced to take a shower and undergo a disinfectant treatment for body and hair lice, scabies or other pests that may be residing on their person.
Booking can take anywhere from an hour to 24 hours or more. It all depends on the number of people that are awaiting processing, the number of staff on duty at the time, and the behavior of the offender.
If the offender is heavily intoxicated and/or violent, the Booking Officer may decide to stick the offender in a holding cell for several hours until they become more manageable.

Juvenile inmates cannot receive visits until after 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, but are allowed visits during regular hours on Saturday and Sunday.
LONG DISTANCE VISITORS
Special visits may be arranged, at the jail's convenience for family and friends who live outside a 100 mile radius of the jail and are only in town for a limited time.
These special visits are scheduled on a one-time basis and cannot be used as an additional visit.
The best way to request a special visit is to schedule a normal visit for the date and time you would like your visit to take place.

How Do You Deposit Money for an Inmate in the Ajo District Jail?
There are three choices for putting money on an inmate's books:
Choice 1 - Dropping Money at the Jail
Only U.S. bank checks and money orders will be accepted at the Inmate Account Window.
No personal checks.
There is no limit to the amount that may be deposited at this window.
U.S. paper currency is accepted for the value of deposit only. No change will be given.
No coins will be accepted for deposits.
Any funds released from an inmate account will be in the form of a debit card or money order.
Prior to releasing any funds, the inmate must submit a Money Transfer authorizing the release of funds from his/her account.
All deposits and disbursement transactions require the depositor or payee to show a valid government issued photo ID:

The Ajo District Jail allows books to be mailed directly to the jail from a reputable source such as Amazon, Barnes & Noble or Books-A-Million. You can order them directly from your computer and have them shipped to the inmate at the address noted.

To find out how to get access to a tablet for inmate read the following:
1. First, Register or Sign In to GettingOut/GTL
2. Purchase the services you want for your Ajo District Jail inmate.
3. All inmates have free access to the tablets to read their letters from family & friends, but there are many other services available to keep your inmate busy while incarcerated... such as Games, Books, Music and Movies. These other services come with fees that you can pay for when you pay for phone service.
