Craighead County Detention Center Inmate Mail

When mailing a letter or postcard to an inmate, please address your mail as follows:

All mail sent to an inmate at the Craighead County Detention Center must include the sender's name and mailing address in the top left corner of the envelope or postcard.

Failure to include your return address will most likely result in your mail NOT being delivered and your letter destroyed.

Craighead County Detention Center does NOT allow mail to sent directly to an inmate.

All mail, as you can see by the mailing address above, must be mailed to a third party who will open the mail, scan it in and send a digital copy to your inmate at the Craighead County Detention Center.

Once scanned in, the inmate will be notified that they have received mail and they can view it on a Kiosk in their unit.

Once released they are able to access the public website of Smart Jail Mail and download all of the mail that you sent to them.

Inmates can still send regular mail to you through the US Post Office using stamps purchased in Commissary.

Type of Mail Allowed for Craighead County Detention Center

Other than regular mail, which must be sent to a third party that creates digital copies of your mail for the inmate to read, Craighead County Detention Center allows the following:

Newspapers

Local or national newspapers may also be mailed to the inmate as long as they are mailed directly from the newspaper publisher.

Magazines

News, special interest or sports magazines may also be mailed to an inmate as long as they are shipped directly from the publisher. Any magazines that contain profanity, weapons, pornography or other content that is adult in nature will be confiscated by the jail staff and will NOT be delivered to the inmate.

Books

Most jails allow books to be mailed directly to the jail from a reputable source such as amazon.com or barnesandnoble.com. You can order them directly from your computer and have them shipped to the inmate at the address above.

Books must NOT contain images or content that are considered excessively violent, pornographic or obscene. Any book that does not meet the Craighead County Detention Center standards will be disposed of.

Hard cover books will not be accepted by the jail due to their potential to be used as a weapon.

Emailing an Inmate

Electronic Messaging

The Benton County Jail uses Smart Jail Mail, a safe and secure two way electronic messaging software designed specifically for communicating with inmates, prisoners, and detainees in correctional institutions.

This allows those who are incarcerated or detained to communicate safely and quickly with family and friends outside of the detention center.

Inmates can send and receive electronic letters using a safe and secure computer kiosk or tablet stationed in the Craighead County Detention Center.

Each message costs just 50 cents which is cheaper than a postage stamp and envelope.

The message can be sent with postage paid and will be free to open and read for the recipient.

Or, the message can be sent collect / "COD" for free and will be paid for by the recipient.

To send or receive a message you MUST open a SmartJailMail account, follow these steps:

1.  Sign Up.

2. Find your Inmate.

3. Get the inmate's approval to Communicate

4. Purchase credits.

5. Communicate.

Each message sent costs $0.50.   

In order to get this price you have to purchase at least ten (10) message credits... $5.00.

Each photo sent costs $1.00.

Mailed Items NOT Allowed

If your inmate is mailed anything other than a letter, postcard or greeting card it won't get through.

However as stated above, because of the increased smuggling of drugs, all mail is scanned into a computer and digital copies sent to the inmate.

POLICIES REGARDING MAILING PHOTOS TO Craighead County Detention Center

Photos can be sent to an inmate via SmartJailMail.

Each photo costs $1.00 to send.

Photos of weapons are prohibited.

Photos of drugs, the consuming of drugs or alcohol is prohibited.

Photos of lewd behavior or people exhibiting too much skin is prohibited.

Important Mail Tips

Mail is always scanned and inspected for obscenity and other rule infractions.

Assume that everything you write will be read by jail staff and can and will be used against you or your inmate in court.  

Never write anything about the inmate's court case you wouldn't want read aloud in court.

Mail is considered by the jail to be a privilege. Any violations of the mail policies can result in the inmate's mail privileges being suspended.
