Back to questions ↑The first 48 hours in Jonesboro
After a warrantless arrest, a judge has 48 hours under Arkansas Rule 4.1 to decide there was reasonable cause. Rule 8.1 then requires that the person face a judge promptly. In Craighead County these hearings usually run by video from the detention center on weekday mornings, and that's where bond is set and a public defender can be requested.
Back to questions ↑Craighead County's courts
Craighead County District Court handles misdemeanors, traffic cases and the early steps of felonies, with a main courtroom in Jonesboro and a Lake City department. Felonies are filed in circuit court, which sits at the courthouses in Jonesboro and Lake City. More at the Craighead court process page.
Back to questions ↑How bonds work at Willett Road
Many misdemeanors carry a set amount from the bond schedule, so release can happen within hours. Felony bonds wait for the judge. Two ways to pay: put up the entire amount yourself, which is refunded once the case closes if the person makes every court date, or hire a licensed bondsman. Arkansas caps a bondsman's premium at ten percent with a $50 minimum, plus small state fees. Call 870-933-4525 to get the exact amount and accepted payment types. See our Craighead bail guide.
Back to questions ↑Public defender in Craighead County
If the person can't afford an attorney, they tell the judge at first appearance. The judge reviews their income and may appoint the public defender for the Second Judicial District.
Back to questions ↑Video visits only
The detention center does visits by video. Families can visit from a lobby station or, for a fee, from home on a computer or phone. Sessions must be scheduled in advance, and you'll set up an account first. Schedules shift with staffing; confirm them online or by phone. See Craighead visitation and home video visits.
Back to questions ↑Phone calls and messages from Jonesboro
Inmates can't receive calls. They call out using prepaid or collect accounts. Messages and tablet services run through the same provider. Start here: phone accounts, messaging, tablets.
Back to questions ↑Money for the commissary
Funds can go in through the web, over the phone, or using the kiosk in the Jonesboro lobby. That money buys snacks, hygiene items and phone time. See deposit options and Craighead commissary.

Back to questions ↑Who handles federal cases out of Craighead County?
These cases usually involve postal inspectors and the U.S. Marshals. Hearings for these cases happen in the federal building in Jonesboro, 615 South Main Street, Room 312, Jonesboro, AR 72401, for Arkansas's Eastern District, Northern Division. The clerk in Jonesboro takes calls at 870-972-4610. Soon after booking, the person sees a federal magistrate judge. Expect questions with pretrial services before court. U.S. court has no bail schedule. A judge weighs detention or release at a release hearing following the 1984 Bail Reform Act.
Start on the jail's inmate list. The Marshals Service office covering this area is at 600 West Capitol Avenue, Suite A328, Little Rock, AR 72201. Dial 501-324-6256 to find the person. Meanwhile, the Marshals may house federal prisoners in the Jonesboro jail through a contract. Following a prison sentence, they transfer to BOP custody. Locate them through the BOP locator.
Back to questions ↑How does an ICE hold work here?
- During booking, fingerprints go to the FBI and Homeland Security. ICE may then issue a detainer (Form I-247A).
- Paying bail does not erase this hold.
- Deputies get a request to hold off on the release for no more than 48 hours. A holiday won't stop the 48 hours.
- Immigration officers can take custody before time runs out. If ICE never comes, this should mean they are released on the local case.
- When the jail has no news, call ICE's regional office on 504-318-2360; it is located at 181 James Drive W, St. Rose, LA 70087.
- Families can look for the person on the web through the ICE detainee locator; it needs an A-number plus where they were born. Without an A-number, type in both first and last names, home country, and the day they were born.
- Only ICE picks the next facility.
How does the move from the Jonesboro jail to state prison work?
A state prison sentence is carried out in the custody of the Arkansas Division of Correction (ADC). They usually wait in the Jonesboro jail until the ADC picks them up. Reception comes first — paperwork, photos and tests. At intake, the ADC reviews how much security they need, gang ties and health and mental health needs. Last, the ADC sends them to a prison matched to those results.
For their unit, use the ADC online search. Our Arkansas state prison page has each unit.
Back to questions ↑Does Craighead County show mugshots online?
Yes. Craighead County mugshots appear in the Craighead inmate roster, next to each name. If the photo is missing, ask the Craighead jail.
ICE pictures are released just via a FOIA request to ICE, if the agency agrees. This county inmate list posts booking photos. When an arrest photo isn't on the website, press questions go to the sheriff's office by calling 870-933-4525. The public and the media cannot obtain federal mugshots as a rule. Requests from families or reporters will not get one; U.S. Marshals release a photo only for a wanted fugitive, to help an arrest or alert people or when the public must be protected quickly.
