Questions remaining? Call the Jackson County Detention Center directly at 870-523-5842.
The Jackson County Detention Center is licensed for 30 inmates, but it is often forced to make room for more, especially on weekends. Of the inmates at most city and county jails in Arkansas, at least 40% turn over monthly, another 30% every 90 days, and another 20% every six months, while about 8-9% stay incarcerated six to twelve months. Inmates held longer than twelve months are usually facing serious charges such as rape or murder. Because those cases take longer to prepare for trial, offenders arrested in Jackson County remain in one of the Jackson County facilities much longer.
In Arkansas, all persons charged with a crime are bailable before conviction, except for capital offenses when the proof is evident or the presumption is great. Judges in Jackson County can release defendants on their own recognizance, set conditions of release, or set a bail amount for any other offense.
Approximately 600 offenders are arrested and detained every year by Jackson County law enforcement agencies.
The Jackson County Detention Center is at 3300 Theater Drive in Newport, AR 72112, the same address as the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office. It is the county’s main adult jail, holding men and women who are waiting on court, serving short county sentences, or waiting to be moved to the Arkansas Division of Correction. The Arkansas Sheriffs’ Association lists its capacity at 110. The 24-hour non-emergency number is (870) 523-5842, and the sheriff’s administrative office is open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
To find out who’s being held, use the sheriff’s inmate search at jacksonsheriff.org/inmates, where you can search by name and filter by arrest date or sex. Remember that an arrest is not proof of guilt, and records change as bookings are updated.
Once someone is booked, they must see a judge without unnecessary delay, generally within 48 hours (Arkansas Rule of Criminal Procedure 8.1). The judge decides on release. Under Arkansas Rules of Criminal Procedure 9.1–9.2, judges consider release on the person’s own recognizance or with conditions first and set money bail only when nothing else will reasonably ensure a return to court. The Arkansas Constitution (art. 2, §8) guarantees bail before conviction except for capital offenses when the proof is evident or the presumption great. A bail bond agent’s premium is set by Arkansas Code §17-19-301 at 10% of the bond, rounded up to the nearest $5, paid in full before release, plus small nonrefundable state fees. Call the jail for the bond amount and accepted payment types. Look up court dates on Search ARCourts at caseinfo.arcourts.gov/opad, and if you think a warrant has been issued for you, talk to the sheriff’s office or an attorney before you turn yourself in.
Visitors must be on the person’s approved visiting list, and first-time visitors fill out a visitor information form and go through a background check. Each person in custody gets one hour of visiting per week on an assigned day and time. Bring a current photo ID. Children under 18 need a parent or guardian who is also on the approved list. Leave shorts, sleeveless or low-cut tops, leggings, sweats and see-through clothing at home. Remote video visits through City Tele Coin are capped at 10 minutes per visitor per day, and there is a free video kiosk in the sheriff’s office lobby. Call to confirm your loved one’s assigned visiting time. No public bus serves the jail; most visitors drive.
Visitors can fill up at the 24-hour Shell at 1020 Highway 367 North or at Murphy USA, 1417 Highway 367. For food, McDonald’s is at 2500 Malcolm Avenue and Taco Bell is at 301 U.S. Highway 67.
Address mail to the person’s full name and inmate ID number, Jackson County Jail, 3300 Theater Drive, Newport, AR 72112, written in blue or black ink. Books must be paperbacks shipped from a retailer such as Amazon, Barnes & Noble or Books-A-Million; newspapers and magazines must come from the publisher. Commissary money is deposited through CommissaryDeposit.com (support: (912) 584-6102), and calls run through City Tele Coin at (318) 746-1114. Ask the jail about release times and property pickup.

What happens during booking at Jackson County Detention Center?
After arrest, individuals are processed at Jackson County Detention Center, where they undergo a series of steps that determine their charges and whether they’ll be released on their own recognizance, allowed to post bail, or held until their court date.
The first rule for anyone arrested is to remain silent. Anything they say can be used in court, so it’s best to speak only to an attorney about the incident.
Here are the typical stages of the booking process at Jackson County Detention Center:
- Verifying the person’s identity.
- Taking mugshots.
- Questions regarding medical and mental health history, along with drug and gang affiliations.
- Collecting DNA if necessary.
- Conducting a physical search.
- Confiscating personal belongings.
- Providing a phone call.
If you need details about an offender’s bail or bond, contact the facility at 870-523-5842.
How do you post bail in Jackson County?
If someone is taken to Jackson County Detention Center in Newport for booking, the next steps depend on their case:
1. The individual may be released without bail, under a promise to appear at a court hearing.
2. They could be held in custody until their trial.
3. They may post a bail or bond for release. To find out the exact bail amount, call 870-523-5842.
Bail payments can be handled in various ways.
- Cash bonds are paid in full, normally at the jail's bonding window or with the clerk of court, by cash, cashier's check or money order, and card payments are often possible through a kiosk in the lobby or an online vendor for a convenience fee; have the inmate's full name and booking number ready, and reach the jail at 870-523-5842.
- Licensed bail bond agents in Jackson County can facilitate payment.
- Property bonds are available in many courts: an owner may pledge land or a home after proving clear title and equity of at least the bond amount (often double) with the deed and a recent tax or appraisal figure, and the court that set bail decides whether to accept it.

There are two options for putting money on an inmate's books:
Choice 1 - Deposit Inmate Money Online
Jackson County Detention Center uses CommissaryDeposit.com to process all online deposits to an inmate's account. The company charges you a small fee for doing so, but the fee probably isn't as much as gas and parking would cost to take it to the jail in person.
Choice 2 - Mail the Inmate Deposit to the Jail
Mailing a deposit takes more time to process than the other methods but can be done if you live too far away to bring it in person and you don't have a debit/credit card for online deposits. Never send cash. Always send a Money Order from the US Post Office, a reputable bank or Western Union.
Make the Money Order out to the inmate's name and put their Inmate ID# in memo section of the Money Order.
**Call 870-523-5842 first to ask Jackson County Detention Center if this option is still available.
