Lawrence County Detention Center
Lawrence County Detention Center
For inmate information at any hour of the day or night, call the 100-bed Lawrence County Detention Center at 870-886-2525.
When someone is arrested in this county for a misdemeanor or felony, they are taken to this jail for booking and processing. If the charges call for it, they stay here until they post bond, are released on their own recognizance, or are ordered held until their trial is resolved.
To see who is currently being held, check the facility’s roster with the inmate search tool.
A sentence of less than one year is served here in the county jail. Anyone sentenced to more than a year is sent to the Arkansas State Prison System or the Federal Bureau of Prisons.
On this page you’ll find how to search the official jail roster, directions to the jail, and details on inmate services, including the visitation schedule and rules, putting money on an inmate’s account, sending letters, inmate phone calls, voicemail, email and text messaging, tablet rentals, posting bail, and ordering commissary.
Write down the inmate’s booking number or jail ID as soon as you find it, since you’ll often need it to send mail or set up communication. If it isn’t listed online, call Lawrence County Detention Center at 870-886-2525 and ask for it.

While licensed for 100 inmates, the Lawrence County Detention Center often exceeds that number, especially on weekends. Most city and county jails in Arkansas turn over at least 40% of their inmates each month, another 30% every 90 days, and another 20% every six months. Approximately 8-9% remain incarcerated for six to twelve months. Those held longer than a year are typically facing serious charges such as rape or murder, which take longer to prepare for trial, so offenders arrested in Lawrence County on those charges stay in one of the Lawrence County facilities much longer.
In Arkansas, all persons charged with a crime are bailable before conviction, except for capital offenses when the proof is evident or the presumption is great. Judges in Lawrence County can release defendants on their own recognizance, set conditions of release, or set a bail amount for any other offense.
Every year, approximately 2,000 offenders are arrested and detained by Lawrence County law enforcement agencies.
The Lawrence County Detention Center at 501 West Elm Street in Walnut Ridge, AR 72476, is the county jail for Lawrence County in northeast Arkansas. It is operated by the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office, which answers at (870) 886-2525 and (870) 886-2922. Governor Asa Hutchinson attended its opening on March 6, 2018. Voters approved a sales tax in 2015 to pay for the $8.5 million building, which replaced a 1960s jail built for 42 people that regularly held around 70. The new detention center has 100 beds, a kitchen, medical space and an exercise area, with room to expand.
The jail holds men and women arrested by the sheriff’s office and other local agencies. Most are awaiting trial; others are serving county time or waiting for transfer to the Arkansas Division of Correction after a state prison sentence. The sheriff’s website posts a current inmate roster showing names, booking numbers, booking dates and charges, along with a warrants page. If your name might be on that list, call the sheriff’s office or an attorney before turning yourself in.
After someone is booked, Arkansas Rule of Criminal Procedure 8.1 calls for a first appearance before a judge without unnecessary delay, generally within 48 hours of arrest. Lawrence County is part of the Third Judicial Circuit, along with Jackson, Randolph and Sharp counties. The Arkansas Constitution (Article 2, Section 8) makes everyone bailable before conviction except in capital cases where the proof is evident or the presumption great. Under Rules 9.1 and 9.2, the judge first considers release on the person’s own recognizance or with conditions, and sets money bail only when nothing less will reasonably ensure a return to court. When a bondsman is used, Arkansas Code §17-19-301 fixes the fee at 10% of the bond, rounded up to the nearest $5 and paid in full before release, plus small nonrefundable state fees. Cases can be followed on Search ARCourts at caseinfo.arcourts.gov/opad.
Visiting is by appointment only. The sheriff’s office schedules visits on Tuesdays and Wednesdays between 8:15 a.m. and 3:45 p.m.; each visit lasts ten minutes, there are no drop-in visits, and arriving late shortens your time. Call (870) 886-2525 to book, and bring a valid photo ID. Visitors under 18 must come with an approved parent or guardian. Remote video visits, phone calls and messaging run through City Tele Coin (citytelecoin.com, (318) 746-1114), where you create an account and add the person you want to reach.
Personal letters are processed through City Tele Coin’s mail center and should be addressed to the person’s full name and PIN number, Lawrence County Detention Center, 4506 Marlena Street, Unit 4, Bossier City, LA 71111. Legal mail and publisher-direct newspapers, magazines and paperback books go to the jail itself at 501 West Elm Street, Walnut Ridge, AR 72476. Because mail procedures change, a quick call to confirm the address is worth it before you send anything. Money for commissary goes through Tiger Commissary, online or by kiosk, and family members can order snack and hygiene packages through Tiger as well.
No public bus serves Walnut Ridge, so plan to drive; the jail sits near the Lawrence County Courthouse. For gas, Casey’s at 401 W. Main St. and 24 Hour Fuel at 820 W. Main St. are both close by. For something quick to eat, there is a Sonic Drive-In at 425 NW 4th St. and a McDonald’s at 511 NW 4th St.

There are three choices for putting money on an inmate's books:
Choice 1 - Dropping Money at the Jail
Ask the jail whether it takes deposits in person before you go.
Call Lawrence County Detention Center to ask whether it has a Tiger kiosk for cash or card deposits, and where it is.

If you can't get your questions answered online call the Lawrence County Detention Center at 870-886-2525.
Choice 2 - Deposit Inmate Money Online
Tiger Commissary's online site lists the services set up for each jail, such as commissary orders or deposits.
Go to Tiger's online site, pick the state and the jail, and see which services it offers there.
Choice 3 - Mail the Inmate Deposit to the Jail
Mailing a deposit takes more time to process than the other methods but can be done if you live too far away to bring it in person and you don't have a debit/credit card for online deposits. Never send cash. Always send a Money Order from the US Post Office, a reputable bank or Western Union.
Call Lawrence County Detention Center at 870-886-2525 to confirm the address to send the money order to and how they want it made out.
Failure to do this properly will delay your inmate getting his account credited and may require you to have to resubmit a second money order.
Call 870-886-2525 to ask facility personnel who to make the money order out to, and where to send it.
