If you’re trying to find an inmate in the Newton County Jail, our Frequently Asked Questions and Answers explain how jail rosters work and what happens after booking.
For questions the FAQs don’t answer, call the Newton County Jail at 870-446-5124.
While the Newton County Jail has a licensed capacity of 32, it is often forced to make room for many more inmates, especially on weekends. City and county jails in Arkansas generally turn over at least 40% of their inmates each month, another 30% every 90 days, and another 20% every six months, and about 8-9% stay incarcerated six to twelve months. Those held longer than twelve months are usually charged with serious crimes such as murder or rape. Because those cases take longer to prepare for trial, offenders arrested in Newton County are held at one of the Newton County facilities much longer.
Anyone charged with a crime in Arkansas has a constitutional right to bail before trial, unless the charge is a capital offense and the proof is evident or the presumption is great. Judges in Newton County can set bail for any other charge, or release the defendant on their own recognizance or under specific conditions.
Every year, approximately 640 offenders are arrested and detained by Newton County law enforcement agencies.
The grayish-white metal Newton County Jail, directly across the street from the Sheriff's Office on Spring Street in Jasper, Arkansas is right next door to the old stone jail which has been shut down since 2009.
The Newton County Jail sits at 300 North Spring Street in Jasper (mailing address P.O. Box 312, Jasper, AR 72641) and is operated by the Newton County Sheriff’s Office. The phone, (870) 446-5124, is answered 24 hours a day. County voters approved a bond issue in 2008 to replace the old jail, which had been in use for more than 100 years before it closed in 2009, and the new building was dedicated in 2012. It has about 30 beds for men and women: people waiting for court, people serving county time, and state inmates waiting on a move to the Arkansas Division of Correction.
Start with the Sheriff’s online roster at myr2m.com/NewtonCoRoster, which shows booking dates, charges and bond amounts, along with new arrivals and recent releases. Newton County is in the 14th Judicial Circuit with Baxter, Boone and Marion counties, and case details are on Search ARCourts.
A person arrested here should go before a judge without unnecessary delay, generally within 48 hours (Arkansas Rule of Criminal Procedure 8.1). Bail is a right before conviction except in capital cases where the proof is evident or the presumption great (Arkansas Constitution, Article 2, Section 8). Under Rules 9.1 and 9.2, the judge looks first at release on recognizance or with conditions, and sets money bail only when nothing less will reasonably ensure a return to court. Bondsmen charge 10% of the bond, rounded up to the nearest $5 and paid in full before release, plus small state-required nonrefundable fees, under Arkansas Code §17-19-301. Call the jail for the bond amount and how it can be paid. If you think you or a relative may have a warrant, call the Sheriff’s Office or an attorney before turning yourself in.
Only approved visitors may visit. Bring a valid photo ID, expect to fill out a visitor information form and go through a warrant check on your first visit, and bring a parent or guardian with anyone under 18. Remote video visits and phone accounts run through City Tele Coin (citytelecoin.com). Visiting hours can change, so call (870) 446-5124 before you make the drive.
Send letters to the person’s full name, Newton County Jail, 300 North Spring St., P.O. Box 312, Jasper, AR 72641, written in blue or black ink with your name and return address. Paperback books need to ship from a retailer such as Amazon or Barnes & Noble. Money can be added online through CommissaryDeposit.com or by mailed money order, and commissary orders go through CommissaryOrder.com.
Jasper has no public transit, so plan to drive. Yeager’s Junction Quik Stop at 301 Court St and Red Oak Station at 100 Stone St are both a short drive from the jail. For food, Ozark Cafe at 107 E Court St and Low Gap Cafe at 601 Court St are local favorites.

There are two options for putting money on an inmate's books:
Choice 1 - Deposit Inmate Money Online
Newton County Jail uses CommissaryDeposit.com to process all online deposits to an inmate's account. The company charges you a small fee for doing so, but the fee probably isn't as much as gas and parking would cost to take it to the jail in person.
Choice 2 - Mail the Inmate Deposit to the Jail
Mailing a deposit takes more time to process than the other methods but can be done if you live too far away to bring it in person and you don't have a debit/credit card for online deposits. Never send cash. Always send a Money Order from the US Post Office, a reputable bank or Western Union.
Make the Money Order out to the inmate's name and put their Inmate ID# in memo section of the Money Order.
**Call 870-446-5124 first to ask Newton County Jail if this option is still available.
