What if someone in Lake County faces federal charges?

Agents from the FBI or the IRS handle federal arrests. The case goes to the Northern District of California in the U.S. courthouse: 450 Golden Gate Avenue, San Francisco, CA 94102. The clerk's line: 415-522-2000. An initial court date comes soon with a magistrate judge. Money is not how it works on federal charges. The judge considers danger and flight risk during a detention hearing per the 1984 Bail Reform Act. The court also reads a report from a pretrial services officer about work, family and record.

Start on the sheriff's roster first. While it's open, U.S. Marshals in most cases keep the person in a county jail. The Marshals Service office for the Northern District of California is at 450 Golden Gate Avenue, 20th Floor, San Francisco, CA 94102. Phone 415-436-7677 to find a federal prisoner. Prison time in a federal case moves the person out of the local jail to the BOP. The BOP locator for the prison once they arrive.

What should families know about a Lake County ICE hold?

  • Right after arrest, prints taken at the jail are checked by federal databases. Then ICE might send a detainer.
  • Posting bail does not erase it.
  • Under a detainer, ICE requests that the sheriff put off release by up to two days. The count includes weekends and holidays.
  • ICE officers can collect them in person while held. If the window passes, staff should let them go on the local case.
  • Find the person at the locator after the pickup, using the person's A-number with birth country. If the person's A-number is unknown, use the full legal name plus birth date and birth country.
  • The final stop is ICE's call and may change.
  • If the jail can't answer, try ICE's San Francisco office at 415-365-8800; it is located at 630 Sansome Street, Room 590, San Francisco, CA 94111.

When is someone moved from Lake County to state prison?

Once a judge orders a prison term, the person becomes a CDCR inmate under California's corrections department. For now, most people stay in the Lakeport jail until the CDCR finds a bed. The trip ends at reception, where they're booked into the system. During classification, officers look up custody level, medical and mental care, and gang links. The last stop is a prison that is right for them.

Use the CDCR online locator for their unit. Our California prison guide has prison addresses.

Will Lake County mugshots show up online?

Try the Lake jail search first. It lists Lake inmates but no mugshots.

California's rule is Penal Code 13665. Social media is what it covers. Nonviolent arrests are the main target. Sheriffs and police can't share them there. Posts must come down within 14 days. Exceptions exist for fugitives and public threats. Jail websites are outside this law. Even so, many sheriffs leave photos off.

When a jail photo hasn't been posted, press questions go to the sheriff's office at 707-263-2690. Federal mugshots are kept private. A booking picture from a federal arrest gets out only through the Marshals Service, for an escaped inmate or fugitive, for urgent community safety or when posting it helps find them or warn the public. For an immigration mugshot, submit ICE's online public records request; approval is up to ICE.
