Which court takes federal charges out of Napa County?

These cases often involve the Postal Inspection Service, the DEA, and the IRS, sometimes with state officers. The county is in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, so hearings take place downtown in San Francisco, 450 Golden Gate Avenue, San Francisco, CA 94102. Clerk's phone: 415-522-2000. Pretrial services also meets them and gives advice to the judge. The first hearing comes quickly, before a magistrate judge. Release isn't a fixed price in federal court. Under federal bail rules, a judge leads a short hearing to decide if they stay locked up.

The local roster may list the hold. Before trial, U.S. Marshals in most cases keep federal prisoners in a nearby jail. This district's Marshals staff in San Francisco can tell you where the person is: 415-436-7677, 450 Golden Gate Avenue, 20th Floor, San Francisco, CA 94102. Any prison term means a transfer to a federal lockup run by the BOP. After that, the BOP locator lists the prison they land in.

How will an ICE hold work?

  • Booking prints are compared through U.S. databases that ICE uses. If ICE thinks your loved one may be removable, it may file an I-247A detainer.
  • Even with bond posted, this hold stays in place.
  • With the I-247A, ICE requests that the jail delay the release by up to two days. Holidays and weekends do not stop it.
  • Agents often collect them at the Napa jail before the deadline. If ICE stays away, that should mean release.
  • Families can reach ICE's San Francisco field office at 630 Sansome Street, Room 590, San Francisco, CA 94111, or by phone at 415-365-8800.
  • Search the ICE detainee locator using the person's A-number and home country. People lacking the person's A-number can enter home country, date of birth and first and last name.
  • Where the person is sent is ICE's call.

Bound for the CDCR? What happens step by step

Once the court imposes a state sentence, your loved one becomes a state prisoner under the corrections department. First, your loved one remains in the Napa jail while the state sends for them. Next, they're taken to an intake or reception center where they're processed. Classification staff review everyone for physical and emotional health, gang connections and security risk. Their end point is a facility that matches their needs.

The CDCR online lookup shows where they're housed once they arrive. The state prison page lists prison addresses.

Back to questions ↑

Can I get Napa County mugshots?

The Napa jail roster has no mugshots; it shows who Napa is holding and why.

Penal Code 13665 sets the state rule. It is about social media only. Most nonviolent arrests fall under it. Police can't post those mugshots online there. Photos posted there expire after 14 days. Exceptions exist for fugitives and public threats. The sheriff's own website isn't covered. Still, most California rosters show no photos.

Any ICE mugshot is released after ICE's online public records request and ICE's approval. Phone sheriff's staff at 707-253-4509 if you work for the media wanting a mugshot that isn't public. Families and the media can't see federal mugshots usually. Marshals policy limits release to three cases: to locate a fugitive or escaped inmate, to aid the search or to warn the public or if it's needed immediately for community safety.

Back to questions ↑

Which agency arrested them in Napa County?

American Canyon, Yountville and other towns contract with the Sheriff; St. Helena and Calistoga have their own police.
