10. Who handles federal charges out of Sacramento County?

It normally starts after agencies like the Marshals Service and the ATF carry out the arrest. Cases out of here go to the Eastern District's Sacramento Division: 501 I Street, Sacramento, CA 95814. The clerk's line: 916-930-4000. The first court date happens quickly with a magistrate judge. U.S. court doesn't use a preset bail list. The judge rules on whether they go home at a detention hearing under the federal bail statute. The court also uses a report from pretrial services.

Check the sheriff's roster; there the hold may show. The district's Marshals office in Sacramento knows where the person is: 916-930-2030, 501 I Street, Suite 5600, Sacramento, CA 95814. Meanwhile, the Marshals Service usually houses your loved one in a nearby jail through a contract. When prison time is ordered, the federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) picks the prison. Search on the BOP's detainee locator.

11. How does an ICE detainer work here?

  • ICE hears about an arrest from the prints the jail shares. Then ICE might send a detainer.
  • A paid bond won't end an ICE hold.
  • Under a detainer, ICE requests that the Sacramento jail hold the person on ICE's behalf up to 48 hours after they would otherwise be released (8 CFR 287.7(d)). Sacramento's jail, bound by SB 54 (Gov. Code 7284.6), releases people when the local case allows, and shares release dates or transfers someone to ICE only when a judicial warrant exists or a qualifying serious crime is on the record.
  • Immigration officers in most cases collect them while held. If ICE misses the deadline, staff should release them on the local case.
  • Look on the online detainee locator by entering your loved one's A-number plus birth country. Lost your loved one's A-number? You can still search by country of birth, date of birth, and the name as spelled on ID.
  • Their next facility depends on ICE.
  • Sacramento County is in the area of ICE's San Francisco field office, phone 415-365-8800; the office is at 630 Sansome Street, Room 590, San Francisco, CA 94111.

12. From the Sacramento jail for state prison: the steps

When a judge orders a prison sentence, your loved one is now a state prisoner in the care of California's corrections department. First, your loved one waits in the Sacramento jail while the state has room. Their first CDCR stop is an intake or reception center. At intake, the CDCR reviews health and mental health needs, gang affiliation and security risk. Their last step is a unit that matches them.

Use the CDCR online locator by name or CDCR number. For visits and mail, read California state prisons.

13. Does the Sacramento jail post mugshots online?

Look the person up in the Sacramento County inmate search. Sacramento mugshots may or may not appear.

See PC 13665 for the law. It covers social media posts. Nonviolent arrests are the main target. Police can't post those mugshots online there. Posts must come down within 14 days. A judge can also allow a post. The sheriff's own website isn't covered. Even so, many sheriffs leave photos off.

Unposted booking photos come from sheriff's staff; media can call 916-874-5115. ICE pictures are released just via a public records request to ICE, if ICE agrees. Federal mugshots stay private. Any release comes from the federal Marshals Service, who permit it only to find a wanted person, to help catch them, or when the area needs a quick safety warning.

15. Did a warrant send someone from Elk Grove or Folsom to the I Street jail?

Probably, if they were booked downtown; most warrant arrests from Citrus Heights, Elk Grove and Folsom go to the Main Jail. The Sheriff's Warrant Services page describes the bureau, reachable at 916-874-5115, and its staff run names by phone, statewide hits included. Open cases appear in the court's public case access. For your own warrant, a lawyer can set up a surrender at a time that suits you, and the G Street clerk can get you a fresh court date.
