About the Hawaii Community Correction Center
The Hawaii Community Correctional Center has a capacity of 226 inmates. It is a medium security institution that houses both male and female inmates, with two separate living units. There is also a 100 bed minimum security unit and a 90 bed special management unit. According to data from the Department of Public Safety, HCCC held 324 prisoners in August, exceeding its operating capacity of 224 inmates. The Hawaii Community Correctional Center is located at 60 Punahele Street, Hilo, HI 96720. The phone number for the facility is (808) 933-0431, and the fax number is (808) 933-0425. Visitation hours at the Hawaii Community Correctional Center vary depending on the source. According to, visitation for the general population of inmates is on Saturdays, Sundays, and state designated holidays. There are two sessions, a morning session from 8:00 AM to 10:30 AM and an afternoon session from 12:30 PM to 3:00 PM. However, states that visiting hours at the facility are on weekends between 9 AM and 3 PM. For more information about visitation rules and hours, contact the Visitation Officer at (808) listed in. The Hawaii Community Correctional Center has been criticized for overcrowding and other issues. In response, officials have agreed to transfer inmates to a prison on Oahu. The facility is also known as the Trial Inmate Housing Unit. The Hawaii Community Correctional Center is unique because it is a 226-bed facility located on two sites in downtown Hilo. It houses both male and female inmates, and the state has recently invested in renovating and expanding the facility to address overcrowding issues. It is a maximum-security prison that accommodates approximately 226 adult male Hawaii State inmates.
