Thursday Visiting Hours at the Spirit Lake Courthouse

  • Thursday: 12:30 PM to 4:30 PM

Checking In for a Hill Avenue Visit

  • Sign in at the Sheriff's Office counter holding a current driver's license or state ID; Baloun's rule makes no allowance for anyone without one.
  • Everyone entering may be searched, anyone under 18 needs adult supervision the whole time, and visitors who appear intoxicated are turned away.
  • No food, drinks, cell phones or recording devices are allowed in the visiting area.
  • The inmate handbook describes these sessions as video teleconference visits and bars anyone released from the Dickinson County Jail within the previous 90 days from visiting.

When the Sheriff's Office closes for a holiday, the handbook says another day is offered; confirm the week's schedule with Jail Administrator Jarrod Fischer at 712-336-2793.

Dress Code for Dickinson County Jail Visitors

Sheriff Baloun requires conservative clothing. Sheer or lace fabric, plunging necklines, cropped or cut-off shirts, high slits, bare midriffs and slogans with profanity or slurs will each get a Thursday visitor sent back out of the Hill Avenue lobby.

Lawyers, cleared clergy, mental-health professionals, physicians, probation and parole officers, social workers and law enforcement may hold confidential professional visits at any hour, seven days a week. Bringing a bag of clothes or books for a detainee requires Fischer's sign-off in advance.

Before Your First Visit to the Spirit Lake Jail

Thursday visits at the Hill Avenue jail need no account or online booking: the sheriff seats visitors in the order they check in at the Sheriff's Office, so arriving early in the 12:30 to 4:30 window helps. Additional or special visits need the jail administrator's approval, per the inmate handbook.
