Johnson County Jail Booking: What Happens After an Arrest in Iowa City
Arrestees from Iowa City police, the University of Iowa police, Coralville, North Liberty and the sheriff's deputies are brought to the jail at 511 S. Capitol St., where they are searched, photographed, fingerprinted and screened. The sheriff's September 2026 dashboard counted 396 bookings that month, with public intoxication and first-offense OWI the most common top charges. A magistrate sets or reviews bond at the initial appearance, and staff at 319-356-6025 can give the charges and bond once booking is complete.
People reporting to serve a sentence may bring four pairs of all-white underwear, socks, T-shirts and bras without underwire, cash for the accommodation fee, and medication in prescribed bottles; piercings must come out, per the Jail Division FAQ.
