Russell County Jail Inmate Search
Russell County Jail Inmate Search, Russell, KS
Use this page to search for a friend or relative held as an inmate at the Russell County Jail, how to ask about booking photos, and which numbers to call after an arrest. The sheriff's 21-bed jail at 210 East Fourth Street in Russell is staffed every hour of the day, and the line, 785-483-2151, is the fastest way to confirm who is inside. No inmate list is published on the web, so the online check is VINELink for Kansas: enter the first and last name, then read the custody status and the agency listed. Because the jail also boards prisoners for other agencies, a name on VINE here may belong to someone arrested in another county. VINE trails fresh bookings by a short gap. Once charges are filed, hearings and case numbers show on Kansas Courts Case Search.
1. Where is someone arrested in Russell County taken?

2. Searching VINELink step by step
- Open VINELink Kansas and enter the legal name.
- Narrow common names with an age or date of birth.
- The record gives custody status and the holding agency, and it updates after transfers and releases.
- Register for alerts by phone, text or email if you want word of any change.
- If nothing turns up, the jail on Fourth Street answers 785-483-2151 at any hour.
3. Does the sheriff post Russell County mugshots?
No. The jail takes a booking photo at intake but does not publish photos or a roster online, and VINELink records carry no picture. Reporters or relatives seeking that picture should contact the sheriff's office at 785-483-2151, which makes the release decision.
Federal booking photos are not normally given out to the public or reporters; the U.S. Marshals Service is the exception and may publish one, for instance to locate a fugitive. Requests for an ICE photo go through ICE's FOIA records request page.
↑ Back to the question list4. Is there a warrant in Russell?
In Russell, the county sheriff's office serves warrants, and deputies there will look up a name at 785-483-2151. The courthouse in Russell posts its cases to Kansas CaseSearch; Kansas has no statewide warrant search, so check there for a bench warrant. Most people take care of a warrant by going to the Russell County Jail at a time their lawyer has set. The district court clerk on North Main, at number 401, can help with a missed hearing at 785-483-5641.
↑ Back to the question list5. Bond after an arrest here
A judge or district magistrate of the 20th Judicial District sets release terms after the arrest, as K.S.A. 22-2901 requires. Bond may be a signed promise, money deposited with the court, a surety from a bondsman approved in the district, or a property bond. The jail, open around the clock at 785-483-2151, gives the amount and accepted payments. Details on each bond type, release conditions and refunds are in our Russell County bail guide.
↑ Back to the question list6. What are the charges, and when is court?
The jail can tell you what the person was booked for. After the county attorney files, the district court clerk keeps the docket at the courthouse, 401 N. Main St., PO Box 876, Russell, KS 67665, 785-483-5641 (fax 785-483-2448). A name search on Case Search shows the same hearings. The stages of a Russell case are on our court process page.
↑ Back to the question list7. Court-appointed lawyers
If paying a defense attorney is out of reach, the defendant raises it at arraignment and fills out the financial affidavit the court hands out. Kansas funds appointed defense through the State Board of Indigents' Defense Services, 785-296-6631. Jail calls are recorded; case facts belong in a conversation with the lawyer.
↑ Back to the question list8. Telling the jail about injuries or medication
Call 785-483-2151 and give the person's medical conditions, prescriptions and pharmacy. Jail medical staff make treatment decisions and send emergencies to a hospital. Raise any worry about self-harm on the first call.
↑ Back to the question list9. Visiting, calls, letters and money
Visiting times and rules come from the jail itself, so call 785-483-2151 before you go; our visitation page explains video and lobby visits in general. Address mail with the person's full name to Russell County Jail, 210 E. Fourth St., Russell, KS 67665. For phone accounts, deposits and the commissary, see the phone page, money page and commissary page, then confirm with the jail.
↑ Back to the question list10. Release and personal property
When bond is paid, release still waits on paperwork and on any other agency's hold, so a person wanted elsewhere may be transported instead of freed. Ask the jail for a time estimate. Wallets, phones and clothing taken at booking come back at release.
↑ Back to the question list11. Where are juveniles taken?
Under-18s are kept out of the adult jail. If a youth needs secure detention, the sheriff arranges a bed at a youth detention facility in the region, and juvenile court files are private. The sheriff's office at 785-483-2151 can say where a young person was sent.
↑ Back to the question list12. After a prison sentence: the move to KDOC
Someone sentenced to prison stays at the Fourth Street jail until KDOC has a bed. KDOC brings new admissions to a reception and diagnostic center for medical, program and security evaluation, then assigns a prison. KASPER shows where they are, and our Kansas state prisons page explains the facilities.
↑ Back to the question list13. Federal charges and the U.S. Marshals
Federal cases go to the U.S. District Court for the District of Kansas. Russell is a Salina division county, and that division is served by the Topeka clerk's office at 444 S.E. Quincy, Room 490, Topeka, KS 66683, 785-338-5400. At the initial appearance a federal magistrate judge reviews custody under the Bail Reform Act; there is no bond schedule.
Pretrial federal prisoners are in the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service, which may board them in county jails such as this one; the Marshals' Topeka office number is 785-596-9470. If prison follows, the Bureau of Prisons takes over, and the BOP inmate locator finds them.
↑ Back to the question list14. ICE detainers: what happens step by step
- Fingerprints from the local booking reach federal systems, which flags the arrest for immigration officers.
- ICE may then file a detainer, Form I-247A, with the jail.
- Bonding out on the Kansas charge leaves the detainer in place.
- Fourth Street staff are allowed to hold them "up to 48 hours after they would otherwise be released" (8 CFR 287.7(d)) while ICE arranges a pickup.
- Without a pickup inside that window, the person is let go.
- ICE assigns the detention location; Kansas is covered by its Chicago Field Office, 101 W. Ida B. Wells Dr., Suite 4000, Chicago, IL 60605, 872-351-3990.
- The ICE detainee locator searches by A-number and country of birth, or by name, date of birth and country. ICE's detention information line: 888-351-4024.

- Russell Police Department, 339 E. Eighth St., Russell, KS 67665, 785-483-2121
