Cumberland County Jail Inmate Search, Portland

To find a person held at the Cumberland County Jail on County Way, start your search with the sheriff's online bookings list below. This page also covers mugshot requests, custody alerts, warrant checks, bail, deposits, and letters. The jail takes arrests from Portland, South Portland, Westbrook, the sheriff, and state agencies.

1. Is there an online bookings list?

Yes. The sheriff posts a bookings search of people confined at the jail. You can look up by first name, last name, booking number, or booking date. Each entry shows the booking number, full name, a short charge code, and the booking date. It has no photos and no bail or release details. It is refreshed from time to time, so it may lag behind real events. People held for federal agencies are left off.

↑ Back to the question list

2. What do the charge codes mean?

The Cumberland bookings list from County Way uses codes. The list uses short codes, not full charge names. Phone the jail and read the code aloud; staff can explain it. The official charge is whatever the district attorney files with the court, so it may differ from the booking code a few days later.

↑ Back to the question list

3. How can I confirm someone is there?

Phone 207-774-5939. Have the full legal name and date of birth. Call the jail for more information about charges or a possible release time.

↑ Back to the question list

4. Can the public get a mugshot from County Way?

Booking photos stay off the County Way list. The bookings list has no mugshots. Requests for a booking photo go to the Sheriff's Office at 36 County Way, 207-774-1444, which decides what to release. For immigration detainees, file an ICE FOIA request. Federal mugshots are not public; only the U.S. Marshals Service may release one in certain cases.

5. How soon after arrest does a name appear?

Booking on County Way includes prints, a photo, a property inventory, warrant checks, and a medical screen. Since the bookings list is refreshed in batches, a name can take a while to appear. If an hour or two has passed, phone the jail instead of refreshing the page.

↑ Back to the question list

6. How is bail handled for a County Way inmate?

A bail commissioner sets release terms when court is closed, and a judge does it once the case reaches Newbury Street. Commissioners may charge up to $60 under 15 M.R.S. §1023. Maine judges are told by 15 M.R.S. §1026 to start with personal recognizance or an unsecured bond. Our bail page walks through paying and the conditions that come with release.

7. Is there a warrant out of Portland or anywhere in the county, and how is it cleared?

The Sheriff's Office at 36 County Way, 207-774-1444, serves Cumberland warrants; for a city warrant, try the police in the town that wrote it. You will not find a statewide public warrant list in Maine, but Cumberland court dockets are searchable through re:SearchMaine, set up from the Judicial Branch records page. To clear a warrant, hire a defense lawyer and turn yourself in together at the Cumberland County Jail, 50 County Way, ideally on a weekday morning when a judge can see you soon. For a failure-to-appear warrant, the clerk at 205 Newbury St. in Portland (207-822-4200) can say whether a new date is possible; Bridgton cases go to 3 Chase St. (207-647-3535).

↑ Back to the question list

8. Where will the first hearing be?

Most cases start at the Portland courthouse, 205 Newbury St.; 207-822-4200. Some cases from the lakes towns are heard at the Bridgton District Court, 3 Chase St., Suite 2; 207-647-3535. The clerk can look up the next date with a full name and date of birth.

↑ Back to the question list

9. Can I be told when the person gets out?

Yes. Releases from County Way appear in VINE. Search the person on VINELink and add your phone number or email. VINE sends a message when the person is released or transferred. Victims can also ask the district attorney's victim advocate for help with notices.

↑ Back to the question list

10. What are the deposit options?

Deposits can be made online, by phone at 866-345-1884, or by money order. For questions, call the inmate funds line at 207-774-5939, ext. 2172. Our money page, commissary page, and phone page have general help.

↑ Back to the question list

11. How should letters be addressed?

Mail for the Portland jail goes to 50 County Way. Use this format:

  • Inmate's full name
  • c/o Cumberland County Jail
  • 50 County Way, Portland, ME 04102

Do not include cash, stamps, stickers, or anything glued. See our mail page and email page for what is allowed.

↑ Back to the question list

12. Can I visit?

Visits must follow the jail's current schedule. Call ahead and bring photo ID. Our visitation page has general tips.

↑ Back to the question list

13. Can a Portland defendant get free counsel?

At arraignment in Portland, the judge asks about money for a lawyer. If the person qualifies, the court assigns counsel through the Maine Commission on Public Defense Services. Family can pass along helpful facts, such as job or school details, which may support a request for lower bail.

↑ Back to the question list

14. The arrest was near Sebago Lake. Where would the person be?

Adults arrested by deputies in Standish, Naples, Raymond, or other lakes towns are still brought to County Way in Portland, not to a local lockup. The case itself may later be heard in Bridgton. Search the bookings list first, then phone the jail if the name has not shown up yet. Families from the western towns should plan for the drive into the city for visits or a release.

↑ Back to the question list

15. Will the person be able to call me?

People at County Way can phone out once booking is done. Calls from County Way go out collect or through a prepaid account, and you should assume they are recorded. Keep case details off those lines. Setup steps are on our phone page, and tablet and text messages are covered on our email page.

↑ Back to the question list

16. What if no bail amount is set?

Some County Way bookings must see a Portland judge first. A commissioner may leave release to a judge, such as for a murder charge, a probation hold, or a case where the person broke earlier release terms. The person then waits for a court date on Newbury Street. Ask the clerk at 207-822-4200 when that is, and bring anything that shows ties to the area, like a lease or pay stub, for the lawyer to use.

↑ Back to the question list

17. Where can I read the actual charge?

For a County Way booking, the charge appears only as a code. The bookings list shows only a short code. Once the district attorney files, the court record shows the formal charge, the class of crime, and the next date. Ask the Newbury Street clerk or search re:SearchMaine. Police reports stay with the arresting department, such as Portland or Westbrook.

↑ Back to the question list

18. Where are people released?

Releases happen at the jail on County Way, close to downtown Portland. Plan a ride ahead of time. Property taken at booking is usually returned at the door, and the person may need ID to collect cash from their account.

↑ Back to the question list

19. Does the bookings list count as a criminal record?

No. It only shows people booked at County Way. Portland-area families can get a statewide record from the State Police SBI; court files are with the clerk or re:SearchMaine.

↑ Back to the question list

20. Where are juveniles held?

Youth are held at the Long Creek Youth Development Center, 675 Westbrook St., South Portland, ME 04106; 207-822-2600. It is the state's youth facility, not part of the county jail.

↑ Back to the question list

21. What if the person is now with the state Department of Corrections?

Long Cumberland sentences are served outside Portland. Use the Maine Department of Corrections search. Our Maine state prisons page has contact details for each facility.

↑ Back to the question list

22. How do I find a federal inmate?

The County Way list skips federal holds. People charged in federal court are in U.S. Marshals Service custody until sentencing. The Marshals' District of Maine headquarters is in the federal courthouse at 156 Federal St., Suite 124, Portland, ME 04101; 207-780-3355. The Bangor office is at 202 Harlow St., Suite 321; 207-945-0416. For case dates, call the U.S. District Court for the District of Maine clerk in Portland, 207-780-3356, or Bangor, 207-945-0575. Once a person is sentenced, use the Federal Bureau of Prisons inmate locator.

↑ Back to the question list

23. What about immigration holds?

When the Portland jail gets an ICE request, state law limits what it can do. A Form I-247A detainer asks jailers to hold a person up to 48 hours after they would otherwise be released, under 8 CFR 287.7(d). Maine statutes 5 M.R.S. §4763 and §4764 keep County Way from holding anyone on that paper by itself, and the person gets a copy. Use the ICE detainee locator to check federal immigration custody.

↑ Back to the question list

24. What if the officer just handed over paper?

Portland officers can write summonses on minor charges. That paper is a summons. The holder walks away free with a date at the Portland courthouse, and County Way has nothing on file.

↑ Back to the question list

25. How do fraudsters target Portland families?

The Portland jail at 207-774-5939 will confirm any real bail. They call claiming a grandchild crashed or got arrested and push for gift cards or wires. Cash bail is accepted face to face, either at County Way or by the Newbury Street clerk. Verify at 207-774-5939.

↑ Back to the question list

26. How can I find a hearing on the Unified Criminal Docket?

Release papers list it, and the Newbury Street clerk will confirm by phone. Our court guide holds the details.

↑ Back to the question list

27. Why might nobody match my search?

The County Way bookings list misses people for several reasons. Nicknames, hyphens, and typos throw off searches. Other reasons: the person already left, got a summons, or sits in a neighboring jail. A phone call with a date of birth clears it up.

↑ Back to the question list

28. Anything to sort out ahead of a County Way trip?

Ring the jail to learn if your relative remains inside and whether visits or bail run at that hour. Lockers are limited, so leave bags and phones in the car and carry ID.

30. Police non-emergency numbers

Baldwin, Casco, Chebeague Island, Gray, Harpswell, Harrison, Long Island, Naples, New Gloucester, North Yarmouth, Pownal, Raymond, Sebago, and Standish have no town police. The sheriff's deputies patrol them, and the Maine State Police help; the Southern Field Troop works from its Gray barracks, reached at 207-624-7076.

In an emergency, call 911.
