Middlesex County House of Correction Inmate Search
Middlesex County Inmate Search: Billerica Jail and House of Correction
Use this page to look up whether someone is locked up after an arrest anywhere in Middlesex, how to ask about a booking photo or mugshot, and which police department or court to call. The Sheriff's Office holds county inmates at the Middlesex County House of Correction, 269 Treble Cove Road, Billerica, MA 01862, 978-667-1711. Staff there confirm custody by phone; after 4 p.m. and on weekends, press 0.
Where might someone arrested in Middlesex be held?
Middlesex booking first happens at the station of whichever city or town police made the arrest. If not released there, they go to the Billerica jail on Treble Cove Road, about 45 minutes north of downtown Boston. The Sheriff's Office says it houses men awaiting trial, sentenced men with county terms, and women classified to its pre-release center.
↑ Back to the question listHow can I confirm a booking?
Phone the Billerica jail's main number above and give the person's name exactly as booked, plus a birth date. The Sheriff's Office keeps that line as its public contact for custody questions. For written records, its Records Access Officer is at 12 Gill Street, Suite 4700, Woburn, MA 01801, 781-960-2830.
↑ Back to the question listHow long do town police stations hold someone?
A person arrested by any Middlesex County police department is kept at the arresting station while a commissioner or clerk decides on bail, or until the court arraigns them; the stations and phones are in the last answer on this page. Anyone who does not make bail goes to the Billerica jail on Treble Cove Road. Women classified to the pre-release center serve their time in a separate unit run by the Sheriff's Office, and the former Cambridge jail inside the East Cambridge courthouse closed in June 2014.
↑ Back to the question listWhat are the ways out of custody?
People held on Treble Cove Road leave by court order, by a bail commissioner's release, or when cash bail is posted at the jail visiting center between 6:30 and 7 p.m. any day. Read our bail page for the full list of section 58 rules and refunds.
↑ Back to the question listIs there a Middlesex warrant out for someone?
Police departments serve most warrants in the county, such as the Framingham and Somerville departments listed below. The Sheriff's Office public information line, 781-960-2805, connects Middlesex callers to the Billerica unit that books warrant arrests. Warrant status comes from Probation's Boston headquarters, 617-727-5300, which answers statewide; MassCourts covers charges and hearing dates instead of warrant status. To clear one, bring a lawyer to the issuing court, turn yourself in at the Billerica jail, or ask the court clerk for a new date. Lowell District Court's clerk is at 370 Jackson Street, Lowell, MA 01852, 978-459-4101.
↑ Back to the question listHow is bail set for a Billerica inmate?
The District Court judge or a bail commissioner applies G.L. c. 276, section 58: release on recognizance comes first, and any cash must reflect what the defendant can pay. The jail itself takes only cash, during its half-hour evening window. A surety company bond can replace cash if the official allows it.
↑ Back to the question listCan I sign up for release alerts?
Massachusetts VINE covers only the Department of Correction, according to mass.gov, so it will not track the Billerica jail. For Billerica releases, phone the jail's main line. For state prisoners, register through VINELink or by phone at 866-277-7477.
↑ Back to the question listWhen will they see a judge?
Arraignment takes place in the local District Court for that town, usually on the next weekday morning. Courts in Middlesex keep weekday hours only, so an arrest late Saturday is typically heard on Monday.
↑ Back to the question listWhich court is handling the case?
Match the town to its District Court on our court page. Lowell, Billerica, Chelmsford, Dracut, Tewksbury and Tyngsborough, for example, all go to Lowell District Court at the Jackson Street justice center. Indicted cases go to Middlesex Superior Court, 200 Tradecenter Drive, 2nd Floor, Woburn, MA 01801, 781-939-2700.
↑ Back to the question listHow do I find a public defender?
The Committee for Public Counsel Services covers the county through trial offices in Lowell, 40-44 Church Street, 4th Floor, Lowell, MA 01852, 978-458-7161, and Framingham, 298 Howard Street, Suite 300, Framingham, MA 01702, 508-620-0350. The arraignment judge decides eligibility.
↑ Back to the question listWhere can I read the charges?
Look up the defendant on MassCourts or phone the clerk of the District Court where the arraignment took place. The jail can confirm a booking, but the complaint itself is a court record.
↑ Back to the question listHow do visits work at the Billerica jail?
Visitor processing at Treble Cove Road begins 30 minutes before each session, first come, first served, and closes 15 minutes before visits start. Each visit lasts 45 minutes and allows up to two adults and four children. Adults need government-issued photo ID, and parents bringing children under 18 must show a birth certificate. The current schedule and request forms are on the Sheriff's Office visitor page; see also our visitation guide.
↑ Back to the question listHow do calls, mail and money work?
Funds for canteen can be left at the lobby kiosk at the Billerica jail from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., and the Sheriff's Office also takes Visa and MasterCard deposits online or by phone. Our money guide, phone guide, mail guide and email guide explain each step.
↑ Back to the question listDoes the Sheriff's Office publish mugshots?
For a Billerica booking image, contact the Sheriff's Office public information line above or file a public records request with the Records Access Officer on Gill Street in Woburn. When a federal agency books someone, the photo is kept from the public and news outlets, unless the U.S. Marshals Service releases one to help catch a fugitive. ICE booking photos go through a records request to the ICE FOIA office.
↑ Back to the question listCould the case be federal?
If federal agents made the arrest, the case goes to the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts, 1 Courthouse Way, Suite 2300, Boston, MA 02210, 617-748-9152. The Marshals Service district headquarters answers at 617-748-2500, and the Federal Bureau of Prisons locator covers federal prisoners.
↑ Back to the question listCan ICE hold someone in Billerica after bail?
Through an I-247A detainer, ICE can ask the Treble Cove Road staff to hold a person no more than 48 hours after they would otherwise be released (8 CFR 287.7(d)). Cash posted at the visiting center does not lift it. ICE's Boston Field Office sits at 1000 District Avenue, Burlington, MA 01803, 781-359-7500, while people it holds appear on the ICE detainee locator.
↑ Back to the question listWhere would a longer sentence be served?
A Middlesex prisoner whose sentence exceeds the county limit is moved into Department of Correction custody. Search the state prison lookup on mass.gov and our Massachusetts prison list.
↑ Back to the question listWhat if the person is under 18?
Youths arrested in Middlesex towns never go to the Billerica jail; the Department of Youth Services places them. Its Northeast Region detention line is 978-646-2300, extension 311. The agency's headquarters is at 40 Broad Street, 4th Floor, Boston, MA 02109, 617-727-7575.
↑ Back to the question listHow do I collect property or exchange clothing?
Property pickup and clothing exchanges at the Billerica jail are by appointment only, Monday through Friday, with 24 hours' notice. Call 978-932-3153 to book. The formerly incarcerated person or a designee named on a property release form or notarized letter must collect it.
↑ Back to the question listWhat should I know before going to Treble Cove Road?
Call ahead, because the Sheriff's Office can suspend visits on short notice and posts those changes on its home page. Bring photo ID for every adult and arrive early for processing. The accredited facility offers education, vocational, addiction and anger management classes, and staff can tell families how to support enrollment.
