Lenawee County Inmate Search: Following a Person From Adrian Booking Through Release

Deputies and city officers bring arrested adults to the Lenawee County Jail, 549 N. Winter Street, Adrian, MI 49221. This guide shows how to check on a person and where to turn for bond, lawyers, visits, mail, money and hearings. It also covers mugshots.

First try the online custody lookup by last name. The result shows if the person is held at the moment. Late bookings can take hours to show, so if you get nothing, pick up the phone.

Dial the jail at 517-265-4400. Keep the person's complete name and birth year handy. Ask what they face, what the bond is and when they next appear. See the bail page for release and the court page for hearings.

Search for an Inmate or Active Arrest Warrant in Lenawee County

1. Looking someone up in the Lenawee County jail list

Try this routine:

  1. Go to the custody lookup page.
  2. Type the surname. Too many names? Add the first name.
  3. Try nicknames, a married name or a shortened first name.
  4. Look at the status line for their custody status.
  5. Phone 517-265-4400 for the charge, the bond and release details.

The same jail number plays a recording with the next court date. Staff can fill in what a screen can't.

↑ Back to the question list

2. The name is blank on the screen, so where are they?

Blank results are normal early on. Here is what may be going on:

  • Booking in progress. Fingerprinting, searches and a health screen come first.
  • A city police cell. The arresting department may keep the person briefly before sending them to Adrian.
  • Back on the street. Someone may have paid bond at the jail already, or arraignment may have ended with a release order.
  • Held elsewhere. A jail in another county may have the person.
  • Spelling trouble. Check each spelling you know.

Phone 517-265-4400. If staff have no booking, ask the department that made the arrest. Those numbers close out this page.

3. Which jail holds Adrian-area arrests?

The county's pages name a single adult jail, the Lenawee County Jail, 549 N. Winter Street, Adrian, MI 49221, 517-265-4400. It acts as the intake and holding center for every arrest. People waiting on court and people serving time both live there, and a classification process splits them up by risk and need.

The Sheriff's Office sits close by at 405 N. Winter Street, Adrian, MI 49221. It supervises the jail but does not hold anyone itself.

When police in a neighboring area made the arrest, that area's Sheriff may hold the person. Scan the Michigan jail directory and phone the right one. A teen is kept apart from adults; see the youth answer near the end.

4. Are mugshots part of the Lenawee County search?

The county's pages never mention mugshots or booking photos on the lookup. Ask the jail at 517-265-4400 whether it can help.

A Michigan Attorney General opinion treats police pictures of suspects as records the public may ask for. Still, the agency can decline when sharing one would be an unfair intrusion on privacy. Mugshots are requested from the arresting department under Michigan's Freedom of Information law, MCL 15.231 and following.

  • ICE keeps its own photos. Request them on the ICE records page.
  • The U.S. Marshals Service alone may release a federal booking photo, such as when hunting a fugitive. Most other booking photos from federal cases are not given out.

5. Free notices when a Lenawee inmate is freed or sent elsewhere

MI-VINE sends a free alert whenever a county jail inmate is freed, transferred or reported escaped, or when a state prisoner's status shifts. Court events are covered too. Sign up at vinelink.com or dial 800-770-7657.

Alerts can lag. When timing matters, also phone 517-265-4400. Released people walk out near door 138, on the Trestle Park side at the back of the jail, so tell your ride where to wait.

6. Getting out after a Lenawee County arrest

Michigan offers several paths:

  • Interim bond. When no magistrate is around, the ranking deputy at the jail may take a modest bond on some misdemeanors. In a domestic violence arrest, a judge or magistrate must make the call first, so the person stays put.
  • Arraignment. The 2-A District Court sits at 425 N. Main Street, Adrian, MI 49221, 517-264-4675. A judge or magistrate, often on video, sets the terms. Many people go home on their own promise to return or a bond that needs no cash up front. Some face rules, like staying away from one person. Cash bail needs a reason on the record.
  • Cash in town. Pay cash bonds at the Judicial Building, 425 N. Main Street, Adrian, MI 49221, Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., holidays excluded. Other hours, pay at the jail. After dark, take the exact amount plus booking fees to door 138.
  • Bond agent. Jail staff can't recommend anyone. The county shares a list of court-approved bondspeople.

If a 10 percent cash deposit was paid, the court refunds all of it unless the person is convicted of an offense under MCL 780.66, minus fines or costs owed. Read more on our bail page, with state rules at Michigan bail law.

7. Finding the accusation behind an arrest

The jail writes down a charge at booking. Phone 517-265-4400 and ask what was entered.

When a case is opened, look for it in MiCOURT Case Search. If nothing comes up, dial the 2-A District Court clerk at 517-264-4675. The Prosecuting Attorney picks the final charges and takes calls at 517-264-4640.

8. Paying for an attorney when money is short

Judges raise the topic of counsel themselves. If the person can't afford an attorney, the court looks into appointing one. Having the money for bond does not by itself rule out court-paid help.

The county states that a public defender office serves people unable to pay in misdemeanor and felony cases. Ask the court at 517-264-4675 how to reach that office. The Michigan Indigent Defense Commission answers at 517-657-3066. Families may also hire a private attorney whenever they like.

Attorneys and clergy on the approved professional list may come in person or by video between 8:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. For questions, call 517-265-4400.

10. Adding funds to an inmate's trust account

Cash taken at arrest is placed in a trust account. It covers bond, commissary, haircuts and booking fees. The jail does not send refunds to relatives or mail checks to pay bills. More help is on our money page and commissary page.

  • Pay at touchpaydirect.com or phone 866-232-1899. Touchpay is the service the jail points families to.
  • Or use the kiosk in the visitation area.
  • Bring the facility number, 249201, and the inmate number. The county's payments page backs this up.

Snack and care packages are ordered through iCare at lenaweemi.icaregifts.com with a credit card and the inmate number. They are delivered Mondays and Thursdays.

11. Calls from inside, plus texts and video

Calls only go out. Nobody can ring in or leave a voicemail. Every call is collect. Our phone page and messaging page give background.

  • Phones work every day from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and again from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.
  • Billing questions go to 866-232-1899. The jail names Touchpay for this.
  • Video chats follow the tablet steps in the visits answer.

12. Writing to someone behind bars here

Address the envelope to the person at 549 N. Winter Street, Adrian, MI 49221. Phone the jail at 517-265-4400 to learn how to place the name and inmate number. Our mail page adds general tips.

  • Personal letters are cut down to postcards. Attorneys, courts, licensed doctors and licensed mental health workers may send regular mail.
  • Staff inspect everything.
  • Books must be paid for ahead and shipped by a publisher or bookstore. Hardcovers are turned away.
  • Subscription magazines are fine. Nudity and sexual content are not.
  • Most inmates keep up to four books or magazines and one Bible.

13. Where do their things go?

For a sentenced inmate, personal property stays at the jail until someone the inmate names collects it. After 30 days the jail destroys or donates what is left. Relatives can't bring items for a person inside.

Ask the jail at 517-265-4400 what happens to belongings at release. A freed person is met at door 138, in the Trestle Park area behind the building.

14. Sickness or injury while in custody

Phone 517-265-4400 and describe the problem to staff. Mention any medicine or ongoing condition.

  • Medical staff see inmates seven days a week.
  • The inmate puts a request in writing for the nurse or dentist. Encourage them to do so.
  • Charges come out of the commissary balance, yet treatment is never held back over money.
  • A counselor for mental health is on staff at no cost.

15. Checking whether a warrant exists

The Sheriff's Office also runs the jail. Phone its Records Office at 517-263-0524 and ask for Records whether a warrant exists, or visit 405 N. Winter Street, Adrian, MI 49221. Michigan has no statewide warrant lookup, so ring the Sheriff or the court to be sure. Offer the full legal name and birth date.

MiCOURT Case Search shows many cases, and a court clerk can check what the search misses. Clearing a warrant starts with legal advice. Then call that court and ask about giving yourself up. Here the District Court is at 425 N. Main Street, Adrian, MI 49221, 517-264-4675.

17. Someone taken by federal agents

A person charged with a federal crime from this area is taken to the federal court for Michigan's Eastern District (Southern Division). You will find it in downtown Detroit, in the Levin federal courthouse (Theodore Levin United States Courthouse) at 231 W. Lafayette Boulevard, Detroit, MI 48226, clerk 313-234-5000.

Whether the person stays locked up is for a federal judge to say, at a detention hearing (18 U.S.C. 3142). Until sentencing, the U.S. Marshals Service watches over the person. Its office in that courthouse, Room 300, answers at 313-202-0135. After sentencing, use the BOP inmate locator.

↑ Back to the question list

18. Someone picked up by immigration agents

A jail can be asked by ICE to keep someone until agents arrive. The request is a detainer, filed on Form I-247A. Under 8 CFR 287.7(d), the jail may keep the person up to 48 hours after they would otherwise be released. ICE then decides whether to take custody.

Try the ICE Online Detainee Locator, which asks for a name and country of birth. You may also call the ERO Detroit Field Office, 985 Michigan Avenue, Suite 207, Detroit, MI 48226, 313-771-6601. It covers Michigan and Ohio.
