Itasca County Jail Annex Inmate Bail & Bonds
Itasca County bail and bond: the Grand Rapids jail and what to do first
When someone is picked up in Itasca County, the Sheriff's Office books them into the Itasca County Jail at 108 NE Fifth Street, Grand Rapids, MN 55744. Below, we explain how a judge decides on bail and where the money goes. You will also learn what a bondsman may charge you.
Your first job is to confirm the arrest. Enter the name in the county's official jail lookup and note any bail amount it lists. Our Grand Rapids Recent Arrests page also covers charges, mugshots and warrants.
Call the Sheriff's Office at 218-326-3477 before you drive in. Ask where the bail desk is today and what it will accept as payment. To follow the case after release, visit our Itasca court guide.
1. Is my brother in the Grand Rapids jail right now?
Look him up in Itasca County Inmate Search. The search covers people held by the Itasca County Sheriff's Office. If he was arrested within the last few hours, the entry may lag, so try again after a while.
The Sheriff's Office number is 218-326-3477. Use it if the search shows nothing or you need to know what a charge means.
↑ Back to the question list2. Where is the Itasca County Jail?
The Itasca County Jail stands at 108 NE Fifth Street, Grand Rapids, MN 55744. The state approves it for 179 beds. The Sheriff is the head of the office that runs it, and the Jail Division line is 218-327-3477.
The Sheriff's Office is at the same address, 108 NE Fifth Street.
↑ Back to the question list3. What decides the bail here?
A district court judge decides after reviewing the case. Itasca County sets bail case by case rather than from a chart, and Minnesota court policy discourages them. Judges are told to start with release on the person's own promise unless safety or flight is a real worry.
If money is required, it should be set at the lowest level that will bring the person back. Check Itasca County Inmate Search for any amount on file.
↑ Back to the question list4. Where do I pay bail in Itasca County?
Call the Sheriff at 218-326-3477 and ask for the bail desk for the day and time you will arrive. Ask the Sheriff's Office at 218-326-3477 which window takes bail and its hours.
The court administration office in the courthouse, 123 Fourth Street NE, takes court payments on weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and answers bail bond questions. Its line is 218-327-2870.
↑ Back to the question list5. Can I pay bail by card?
Call the Sheriff's Office about payment types, since the answer depends on who takes the money and what hour it is. Ask at 218-326-3477 before you leave.
Never pay a person who contacts you first. A bondsman's fee is not refundable, so ask about it up front.
↑ Back to the question list6. What is the bail for common crimes in Itasca County?
No county list exists to quote. A judge picks a figure after seeing the charge and the person's history.
State law caps cash bail for misdemeanors and gross misdemeanors at double the highest cash fine for the crime, with larger multiples for a few offenses such as certain assaults (Minn. Stat. 629.471). Felony amounts are up to the judge.
↑ Back to the question list7. How long can police keep someone before a judge sees them?
The first appearance must happen within 36 hours or as soon as a judge can hear it. Sundays, legal holidays and the arrest day are not counted, but Saturdays are. A judge must also review the facts within 48 hours counting every day (Minn. R. Crim. P. 4.02 and 4.03).
After that review the judge can set bail, add rules or let the person go. The courthouse at 218-327-2870 can say when a case is on the calendar.
↑ Back to the question list8. What do bondsmen in the Iron Range area charge?
The Department of Commerce licenses them and the State Court Administrator must approve them. Premiums follow the rate the surety filed, with a $100 floor (Minn. Stat. 60M.02). It is not a flat state percentage.
Collateral you hand over must be logged and receipted, and the agent has 21 days to return it after proof the bond is discharged (Minn. Stat. 60M.03).
↑ Back to the question list9. Can a lake home or wooded lot be used as security?
A judge may accept security other than cash, but Itasca County has no published property-bond procedure. Only the court can say whether your land qualifies and how it must be filed.
Call 218-327-2870 and ask for the criminal clerk. State law forbids a bondsman from holding a quitclaim deed on your land as collateral.
↑ Back to the question list10. Which Itasca County court handles felonies and traffic tickets?
All adult cases begin in the Itasca County District Court, Ninth Judicial District, at the courthouse on Fourth Street NE in Grand Rapids. The court administrator oversees it.
Minnesota has no separate municipal courts. Tickets, misdemeanors and felonies all appear on the same district calendar.
↑ Back to the question list11. Why do I see no bail listed?
The first hearing may not have happened. The person may also have a probation hold, a warrant from another county, or a domestic-abuse arrest where the judge looks at victim safety first.
Minnesota has no death penalty, so there is no capital-case exception that blocks bail. Ask the Sheriff at 218-326-3477 what the entry means.
↑ Back to the question list12. My daughter is 16 and was picked up. Where is she?
The Itasca County Jail has no approval to hold juveniles, so a teenager should not be in the adult jail. Court administration can tell you which youth detention center is holding her.
Call court administration at 218-327-2870 the same day to learn where she is and when the detention hearing is. Her record will not appear in the adult search.
↑ Back to the question list13. How can we get a public defender in Grand Rapids?
Ask the judge at the first appearance and be ready to complete a financial statement. The court names the lawyer if you qualify.
For the local public defender office, ask court administration at 218-327-2870.
↑ Back to the question list14. What if the case is in federal court?
Federal charges go to the U.S. District Court for the District of Minnesota, and a federal judge decides release. State bail rules do not control.
Federal prisoners are sometimes kept in county jails. The Sheriff's Office at 218-326-3477 can tell you who holds your relative.
↑ Back to the question list15. How do I get bail money back?
Cash bail sits with the court administrator until the case is done. It then goes to the defendant or to a person the defendant names in writing, minus any fine or restitution (Minn. Stat. 629.53).
A bond fee paid to an agent stays with the agent.
↑ Back to the question list16. What bail scams are common?
Callers pose as deputies and demand payment by gift card or app. No jail or court in Itasca County asks that way. If you get such a call, hang up and dial the Sheriff at 218-326-3477.
