Jefferson County Adult Correctional Facility Inmate Search
Who Is in Custody in Jefferson County? Inmate Search at the Madras Jail
Adults arrested anywhere in this county, whether by a deputy, a Madras officer or a trooper, are booked at the Adult Correctional Facility, 675 NW Cherry Lane, Madras, OR 97741. The 150-bed jail shares its building with the Sheriff's Office. Read on for searching the list, then visits, mail, money, calls, warrants, court dates and federal or immigration holds.
The Sheriff's Web Jail Viewer holds the current list of people inside. The jail chooses which details each entry carries, and these can include a description and the charges the arresting agency filed. The Sheriff warns the list may hold mistakes, so double-check anything important by phone.
The control room never closes. Call 541-475-2869 and spell the person's name, then give the birth date. Ask about the charge, any release ruling and the next court date. For release rules, see our bail page, while hearings and case steps get their own court page.
1. Using the Jefferson County jail viewer
On an average day the jail holds about 70 people, and roughly 130 new bookings come through each month. Here is how to look someone up:
- Open the Web Jail Viewer in any web browser.
- Go into the site and pick the current inmate list.
- Search for the last name. A phone's "find on page" tool works well.
- Read what the entry shows, such as the booking details and the charges filed by the arresting agency.
- If the entry shows a booking or ID number, write it on paper for calls to the jail.
Questions about a person on the list go to the control room at 541-475-2869, any hour of the day.
↑ Back to the question list2. The name won't come up. Why?
When a search turns up nothing, one of these is usually why:
- Still being booked. Entering a new arrival takes a while, so the list can trail a fresh arrest.
- Already gone. Many low-level charges end with release on a promise to appear. Someone who posted money is often out 10 to 20 minutes later.
- Moved. Transfers happen to other counties' jails, to state prison and to federal holding.
- Typed differently. Search once more, adding a middle name or swapping in a past surname or a likely misspelling.
- A minor. Arrested kids under 18 are taken to juvenile detention, and the adult list will not show them.
- Arrested on tribal land. Warm Springs police may have handled it through the tribal system.
Staff can settle the question quickly at 541-475-2869.
↑ Back to the question list3. Other jails that could be holding them
This county runs one adult jail. Someone picked up close to a neighboring county, or wanted by another agency, could be sitting in one of these:
- Crook County Jail, 308 NE 2nd Street, Prineville, OR 97754, 541-416-3620
- Deschutes County Adult Jail, 63333 West Hwy 20, Bend, OR 97703, 541-388-6661
- NORCOR (Northern Oregon Regional Corrections), 201 Webber Street, The Dalles, OR 97058, 541-298-1576
- Linn County Jail, 1115 Jackson St. SE, Albany, OR 97322, 541-967-3901
- Marion County Jail, 4000 Aumsville Hwy SE, Salem, OR 97317, 503-581-1183
The Department of Corrections runs Deer Ridge Correctional Institution, 3920 East Ashwood Road, Madras, OR 97741, which holds people serving state prison terms. Questions about anyone there go to DOC at 503-945-9090.
↑ Back to the question list4. Booking photos and Oregon's mugshot law
The jail picks what the viewer displays, so what you see can differ from one entry to the next. Since 2021, House Bill 3273 has limited when Oregon police may hand out a booking photo. Officers can still share it with the arrested person, a crime victim or a case participant. A conviction also opens the door, and so does a police need like hunting a runaway suspect.
- News outlets or anyone else asking about a booking photo can reach the Sheriff's Office at 541-475-6520.
- Sites that charge to take mugshots down have 30 days after a request to do it, and their fee can't top $50. For a dismissed or set-aside case, the photo must come off in seven days at no charge.
- Someone wanting an ICE booking photo must send a request using the ICE records request page.
- Federal agencies generally keep their photos private. When a fugitive is on the loose, though, the U.S. Marshals Service is allowed to publish a picture.
5. Text or phone alerts when someone is released
Oregon's version of VINE goes by VISOR. The Department of Corrections runs it, and it shows custody status for people in county jails and in state prisons. Go to visor.oregon.gov, or phone 855-691-6246, open 24 hours.
- Searches work with a full name, part of a name, or an SID or County ID number.
- Alerts can reach you by voice call, email or text after a release, transfer or escape.
- Registering takes no account, and the jailed person never learns who signed up.
Alerts can lag, so for a same-day answer call the control room at 541-475-2869.
↑ Back to the question list6. Getting out of the Madras jail
In Oregon, a signed promise to come back is the normal first step toward release. The statewide release guidelines let many people on minor charges leave without seeing a judge. Bigger charges, like domestic violence, sex offenses and Measure 11 crimes, wait for the judge at the first appearance. That appearance has a 36-hour deadline, and since only court days count, a weekend or holiday stretches it.
According to the Sheriff, Senate Bill 48 means money usually can't be posted for a new charge. The exception is a warrant arrest where the amount is already set. In that case, 10 percent is the typical deposit, and $25 is the least. Staff cannot make change. Show up with ID that has your photo and with the amount down to the cent.
Ask the control room at 541-475-2869 whether security applies. Our bail page covers refunds, holds and court review.
↑ Back to the question list7. Learning the charges in Jefferson County
The viewer can list the offenses the arresting agency booked the person on. Treat those as a first draft. The District Attorney's Office decides what charges are actually filed, and they can change.
- District Attorney: 129 SW E Street, Suite 102, Madras, OR 97741, 541-475-4452, weekdays 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
- After the DA files, charges and court events pop up on OJD Records and Calendar Search, which costs nothing to use.
- Prefer to hear them read aloud? Phone the clerk's front counter at 541-475-3317.
Oregon groups crimes in two tiers, each with Class A, B and C: felonies on top, then misdemeanors. Below both are violations, which bring a fine and no jail.
↑ Back to the question list8. A lawyer for someone in the Madras jail
The first court date is when to request appointed counsel. The person fills in a short money form. A court screener reviews it. There is typically a $20 fee, and judges are able to waive it. A person with no money still gets counsel.
- After a lawyer is named, the person has two days to contact that office, or the release agreement is broken.
- The Oregon Public Defense Commission funds appointed lawyers across the state.
- Oregon is short on defenders. Under the Betschart federal order, seven days in jail past the first appearance with nobody appointed generally triggers release on conditions.
- Paying privately? Oregon State Bar referrals: call 503-684-3763.
Lawyers who need a professional visit should call the jail at 541-475-2869 for the current rules.
↑ Back to the question list9. How video visits work at the jail
Visits here are by video. There are two ways to do it:
- From home. Remote video visits run through the jail's contracted vendor on a computer or a cell phone. These are paid visits, and there is no weekly cap on them.
- At the Sheriff's Office. Two video kiosks at 675 NW Cherry Lane, Madras, OR 97741 are free. Each inmate who isn't on discipline gets three free kiosk visits a week.
For the schedule, how to sign up, ID rules and whether children may come, call 541-475-2869. Our visiting guide has tips for a good first visit.
↑ Back to the question list10. Putting money on an account in Jefferson County
The jail takes cash, bank cashier's checks and money orders for inmate accounts. Bring them during the Sheriff's Office's regular business hours at 675 NW Cherry Lane, Madras, OR 97741. If your video visit falls outside those hours, you may leave money at that visit.
- Commissary spending is capped at $60 a week, and calling cards don't count against it.
- Orders go in on Sunday and arrive on Thursday.
- Money must already be on the account when the order is placed.
- An inmate can use the account to post their own security.
To ask about other deposit options, call 541-475-6520. Never mail cash. Our deposit guide covers sending funds, and the commissary guide covers snacks and supplies.
↑ Back to the question list11. Phone calls from the jail
The jail's information page says calls can be made from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. every day, unless phone privileges are taken away. Calls are collect, or paid with $20 calling cards bought through commissary. Each call stops at 15 minutes, with a warning before it cuts off.
Phone services change, so call 541-475-2869 to ask how calls, messages or tablets work now. Oregon law requires every jail to have written phone rules (ORS 169.076).
Talk about the case belongs with the defense lawyer, not on a jail call. See our jail phone guide for calls and our inmate email guide for messages.
↑ Back to the question list12. Mailing address for Jefferson County inmates
Address letters like this:
[Inmate's full name]
675 NW Cherry Lane
Madras, OR 97741
Staff inspect or read all mail and process it within 24 hours. These items are turned away:
- Sexual material, crime how-tos, coded letters, threats or blackmail
- Newspaper clippings, internet printouts and instant photos
- Anything with crayon, white-out, paint, lipstick, perfume or body fluids
- Blank paper, envelopes or stamps, which the person buys through commissary
Up to six photos may come in one envelope, each 4 by 6 inches or smaller. Write your name and address in the top corner of the envelope. First-time writers should look over our mail guide.
↑ Back to the question list13. Dropping off or picking up belongings
Families can't drop off clothes or other items for someone inside. In special cases, the jail commander may okay a written request in advance.
The jail keeps a person's booking property in storage while they are held. If they left something behind, call 541-475-2869 before you go. Ask if a relative may collect it, whether the owner must sign a release, and what hours to come. Pickups are at 675 NW Cherry Lane, Madras, OR 97741. Bring photo ID.
↑ Back to the question list14. Health care, meals and programs inside
Two nurses work at the jail. Oregon lets a jail bill a health fee, but care can't be withheld from someone who has no money (ORS 169.150). The state's jail rules add emergency medical and dental care, three regular meals daily, and an officer's look at each person once an hour (ORS 169.076).
Worried about a medicine or a health condition? Call 541-475-2869. Tell staff the drug's name and dose, and give them the prescribing doctor's number. For an emergency, dial 911.
Programs inside include church services, AA and NA meetings, mental health classes, GED courses and a class called Breaking Barriers. There are also recreation yards and books every day.
↑ Back to the question list15. Searching for a Jefferson County warrant
Deputies serve warrants in rural areas and the two contract towns; ask the Sheriff's Office records desk at 541-475-6520. Madras police serve them within city limits, 541-475-2424. Fugitive pages that cover Oregon: the FBI Portland office, prison escapees on Oregon DOC Most Wanted, and the 15 Most Wanted list from the Marshals. Open cases appear in the OJD Records Search; the court clerk can look one up by phone. Most warrants name the security amount for release. A lawyer should be the first call. Then the person surrenders at the court that issued it, or phones that court to reschedule. Circuit Court: 129 SW E Street, Madras, OR 97741, 541-475-3317.
↑ Back to the question list16. Court dates for someone in the Cherry Lane jail
- Circuit Court, 129 SW E Street, Madras, OR 97741, 541-475-3317, weekdays 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
- Upcoming hearings show up for free in the OJD Records and Calendar Search.
- Sign up for the court's text reminders.
- Warm Springs Tribal Court, 2126 Warm Springs Street, Warm Springs, OR 97761, 541-553-3278, for tribal cases.
Step-by-step case details are on our court page.
↑ Back to the question list17. Tracking a person in federal custody
The federal court's Portland Division hears cases from here. The clerk can be reached by mail or in person through the Mark O. Hatfield U.S. Courthouse, 1000 Southwest Third Avenue, Suite 740, Portland, OR 97204, 503-326-8000.
- Whether the accused waits for trial at home or locked up gets settled at an early hearing (18 U.S.C. 3142).
- The Marshals hold federal defendants before trial. To learn where, call the U.S. Marshals Service in Portland, 1000 Southwest 3rd Avenue, Room 401, Portland, OR 97204, 503-326-2209.
- Housing for federal prisoners can be FCI Sheridan or a county jail that accepts them. FCI Sheridan is at 27072 Ballston Road, Sheridan, OR 97378, 503-843-4442.
- After sentencing, search the Federal Bureau of Prisons inmate locator by name or register number.
18. Locating a person ICE has detained
- To request a hold, ICE sends a jail its detainer form, the I-247A.
- The form requests custody for up to 48 hours after they would otherwise be released (8 CFR 287.7(d)).
- Oregon's sanctuary laws (ORS 181A.820 to 181A.829; HB 3265, 2021) mean an ICE request with no judge's signature on it gets no help from Oregon officers or jailers. So the jail here generally won't hold anyone on an ICE detainer alone, or share someone's time of release so ICE can pick them up.
- If ICE arrested the person on its own, try the ICE Online Detainee Locator. It accepts an alien registration number by itself, or the full name plus the person's native country.
Oregon is part of ICE's Seattle Field Office, 12500 Tukwila International Boulevard, Seattle, WA 98168, 206-277-2000. Its Portland office is at 4310 S Macadam Avenue, Suite 300, Portland, OR 97239, 503-326-4165.
↑ Back to the question list19. Finding a state prisoner after sentencing
- Oregon processes every newly sentenced prisoner at Coffee Creek Correctional Facility, 24499 SW Grahams Ferry Road, Wilsonville, OR 97070. Intake takes about 30 days.
- Women then stay at Coffee Creek. Men are sent on to an assigned prison.
- Look up anyone in state custody on the Oregon Offender Search.
- The state prison system's main number is 503-945-9090.
- Visits, mail and phones at each prison are covered in our Oregon state prisons guide.
After release, people on probation or post-prison supervision check in with Adult Community Corrections, 243 SW 3rd Street, Madras, OR 97741, 541-475-6145. That team works apart from the jail staff.
↑ Back to the question list20. When a teenager is arrested
Anyone 12 to 17 is handled by the Juvenile Justice Department, and youths are held in a juvenile detention center, apart from adults. Call the department at 243 SW 3rd Street, Madras, OR 97741, 541-475-3463, weekdays 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Ask which detention center has the young person and when the first hearing is.
The public court search leaves juvenile cases out. Since 2020, an older teen facing a Measure 11 charge can be tried as an adult only after a judge holds a waiver hearing. Youths sent to state custody by a judge live in an Oregon Youth Authority facility.
↑ Back to the question list21. Arrests on the Warm Springs Reservation
Oregon took over criminal cases on most tribal land under Public Law 280, but the Warm Springs Reservation was left out. When tribal police arrest a tribal member there, the case may go to the tribal court or federal court. Ask the tribe's offices where the person is:
- Warm Springs Tribal Police, 2144 Kota Street, Warm Springs, OR 97761, 541-553-3272
- Warm Springs Tribal Court, 2126 Warm Springs Street, Warm Springs, OR 97761, 541-553-3278
22. Police agencies that make arrests in Jefferson County
About 25,740 people live in the county, going by Census numbers dated July 1, 2025. Look for the arresting agency's name in the jail entry, then use the list below:
- Jefferson County Sheriff's Office, 675 NW Cherry Lane, Madras, OR 97741, 541-475-6520. Deputies cover about 1,781 square miles, everything outside the county seat's city limits.
- 24-hour non-emergency dispatch: Frontier Regional 911, 135 S Main St, Condon, OR 97823, 541-384-2080.
- Madras Police Department (city population 8,242), 125 SW E Street, Madras, OR 97741, 541-475-2424.
- Culver (1,661) and Metolius (1,015): each city has a contract with the Sheriff's Office for patrol, so call the Sheriff's number above.
- Oregon State Police, local worksite at 1713 Highway 97, Madras, OR 97741, 541-475-6573. Troopers handle state highways.
- Warm Springs Tribal Police, 2144 Kota Street, Warm Springs, OR 97761, 541-553-3272. The 24-hour line is 541-553-1171.
The town numbers are PSU certified estimates as of July 1, 2025.
