About the Jefferson County Jail
Located with the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office at 675 NW Cherry Lane, Madras, Oregon, the Jefferson County Jail accepts only adult inmates and was completed in 2000. When it opened in the following year it multiplied the capacity of the original facility, allowing it to hold 150 beds. During the transition to the new facility there were 25 inmates who were transferred from the old facility to the new one. With only an average of 70 people in the jail at any one time, it has not yet reached capacity and the goal of the local sheriff is to ensure that it doesn’t need to be at full capacity. People who are arrested and booked into this facility are often held only until they meet bail, or they may remain until their trial has been completed and serve their sentence. In order to support these inmates there are several programs to encourage exercise, mental health classes, AA/NA meetings, GED classes, and more. Programs are added and removed based upon availability of qualified people to run them, and if there is a demand for another option. Televisions are provided in the common rooms but cable is not available, and there is a lending library to select books to read, along with recreation yards and fitness spaces. Inmates are allowed to have 3 visits via video each week for free, and then unlimited number of paid visits after that. Each visit is monitored, and remote visits can be conducted through Securus Technologies at securustech.net. Two kiosks are present in the lobby for those who do not have access to internet or to a device capable of video calls. Professional visits of lawyers, clergy, mental health care providers, and those who are investigating the case have increased access and reduced limits on their visit. Telephone services are provided by the same company and can be accessed at the website for Securus Technologies. Phones are available from 8 am to 10 pm each day. This allows inmates to make outgoing calls to those who they are permitted to contact via phone. To provide a few comforts there is a commissary that is delivered each week and inmates are allowed up to $60 worth of commissary purchases each week. This includes personal hygiene items, games, cards, over the counter medication, denture and contact supplies, and snacks. Too add money to the account of an inmate for phone calls, commissary purchases, and other needs, it can be provided to the front desk during regular business hours, or during a scheduled visit.
