With 72 beds to house juveniles 11 to 18 years of age, the South Carolina Juvenile Detention Center serves 46 counties across the state including Oconee County. It provides a safe environment for securing youth who are a risk to their own safety or the safety of those in the community, any juveniles who are facing serious or violent charges, and others who have a history or reason to suspect they will not appear at their court dates if released. To provide full care for each of the residents each of the meals is prepared to meet all nutritional needs and snacks are provided, along with all medical care and mental health care by professionals within the industry. Teachers attend the classrooms each day to provide a full education to all students that matches that of the public schools. Mental health professionals help to create a care plan along with medical professionals and educators to make the best program for each juvenile, providing them with education, care, opportunities for personal growth, and the chance to develop new life skills and improve social skills. Mail is subject to search for the removal of any contraband.
