Cass County Inmate Search: Locating Someone Booked on Hwy 8

Every adult arrested in Cass, by deputy, constable, trooper or Atlanta or Linden officer alike, gets booked into the Cass County Jail, 604 Hwy 8N, Linden, TX 75563. The jail's main line is 903-756-7511. Below: finding the person, mugshots, charges, visits, mail, money, warrants, and the agency behind the arrest.

Your first stop is the Sheriff's Citizen Connect inmate confinements search. Type a last name, then check the Current Confinements tab for people inside right now. The Admits by Date Range tab reaches back as far as 31 days, which helps when someone was booked and then let go or moved.

Can't find them, or want details? Phone the jail and ask about the booking, the charge, any bond, and the next court step. To work on release, open our Cass bail page. To follow the case, see our Cass court page.

Search for an Inmate or Active Arrest Warrant in Cass County

1. Searching the Cass County booking list: six quick moves

  1. Open the Sheriff's Citizen Connect booking search.
  2. Stay on Current Confinements to see who sits in the Hwy 8 jail today.
  3. Type a last name only. Spellings vary, so less is more. Too many matches? Then add the first name.
  4. Recent arrest or quick release? Switch to Admits by Date Range and pick dates covering the last few days. That window can stretch to 31 days.
  5. Use the Charges tab to search by offense, or Arresting Agency to see bookings by department, such as Atlanta police or DPS.
  6. Jot down the booking date and charges you see before you call.

The page loads its list after a short pause, so give it a moment. If it stalls, try another browser, or just call the jail at 903-756-7511.

2. Zero matches on Citizen Connect: what next?

A missing name usually has a boring cause:

  • Still in booking. Fingerprinting and forms on Hwy 8 come before the record shows. Check back in a few hours.
  • A different spelling. Search a nickname, the maiden name, or just two or three letters.
  • Released already. A quick bond, a personal bond or a charge the state dropped can free someone within hours. Use the date range tab to spot a recent admit.
  • Booked elsewhere. An arrest across the line in Morris, Marion or Bowie County means that county's jail, not Hwy 8.
  • Federal or ICE custody, covered further down.
  • Under 17. Children never appear on the adult list.

Faster than any screen: phone the Hwy 8 jail, 903-756-7511. With a full name and birth date, staff can say if the person came in, left, or got sent somewhere else.

3. Hwy 8 or a jail near Cass County: where are they held?

Cass runs one adult lockup, the county jail inside the Law Enforcement & Justice Center at 604 Hwy 8N, Linden, TX 75563. Officers from Linden, Atlanta, Hughes Springs and Queen City bring arrests there, as do constables and state troopers. A 2022 state report listed room for 96. That August, the state counted 4 Cass inmates housed in other counties, so ask staff if your person was moved.

If the arrest happened outside Cass, try these nearby county jails:

4. Cass County mugshots: where do booking photos come from?

Mugshots are a top search after any Cass arrest. Citizen Connect shows booking records; whether a photo comes with each one is a question for the jail. For an official booking photo, the Sheriff answers Public Information Act requests sent in writing to P.O. Box 180, Linden, TX 75563. What gets released is the Sheriff's call (Gov't Code §552.108(c)).

  • ICE photos: ask through the agency's Freedom of Information Act request page.
  • Federal booking photos generally aren't handed out. Occasionally, though, the U.S. Marshals Service will release a fugitive's photo.
  • Private mugshot websites are covered by Bus. & Com. Code ch. 109. Sites asking $150 or more for removal must, for free, fix or take down wrong or incomplete Cass records. They may not publish an expunged or nondisclosed record at all.

5. IVSS-Counties: free word when they leave or move

Texas runs a free service called IVSS-Counties for county jail custody. Search for the person and register for notices when their custody changes. Phone registration works too, at 866-268-8959, any time, in English or Spanish. It is confidential.

Once someone moves to state prison, switch to TDCJ's own IVSS for state inmates, which the Cass Sheriff's page also links.

6. Bond, bondsmen, personal bonds: getting out of the Cass jail

Within 48 hours, one of the four Cass JPs, sitting as magistrate, sees the person, sometimes over Zoom. That JP names a dollar amount, or grants a personal bond, meaning a signed promise to come back stands in for cash. Paying the full amount in cash, or hiring a licensed bondsman for a fee you won't get back, are the other two roads.

Some people stay in even after bond is posted. Holds do that: an ICE detainer, a parole blue warrant, a warrant from some other county, or the 4-hour family violence hold. Phone 903-756-7511 and ask two things, the bond amount and any hold. For payment, bondsmen and refunds, our Cass bail page has the details.

↑ Back to the question list

7. Reading the charge: ticket, misdemeanor or felony?

Start with the Charges tab on the booking search, which sorts bookings by offense. Charge levels you may see:

  • Class C means fine only. Class B and Class A are misdemeanors that can bring county jail time.
  • Felonies climb from state jail felony to third degree, second degree, first degree and, at the very top, capital.

The Criminal District Attorney may rewrite a booking charge after review. For the formal charge, call the District Clerk at 903-756-7514. The clerk can also say if an indictment or information has been filed.

↑ Back to the question list

8. Appointed counsel from a Hwy 8 cell: how is it requested?

At magistration, the JP asks whether a free lawyer is wanted. A yes starts things. If they missed that, a relative can pick up the request form from the District Clerk or a court coordinator. The finished form goes to the District Clerk's office.

In Cass, counsel gets appointed within three working days of the request. Families on SNAP, TANF, Medicaid or SSI, or in public housing, are presumed eligible, as are people with low income. Under Crim. Proc. Code art. 26.04, the appointed lawyer must then make contact efforts by the following working day's close.

9. Visiting the Cass County Jail: days, length, video?

Call the jail at 903-756-7511 before you drive out. Ask about visiting days, how long visits last, how to sign up, the dress code, and any video visit option.

Texas jail standards set a weekly minimum: two noncontact visits per inmate, 20-plus minutes apiece, one of them in evening or weekend hours. Some jails win an exemption from in-person visits and offer video only (Gov't Code §511.009). Carry a photo ID to Hwy 8. Our visitation page has general advice.

10. Cash for a Cass inmate's account and commissary

Account money buys snacks, soap and toothpaste, phone time and sometimes tablet use. Ask the jail at 903-756-7511 how deposits work right now, whether by lobby kiosk, online, or a mailed money order. Keep the booking number from Citizen Connect handy.

Our page on sending money covers deposit basics. Snack and supply ordering? That's on the commissary page.

↑ Back to the question list

11. Calls out of Hwy 8, tablets and messages

Most jails let inmates call out but take no incoming calls. Most jails use a phone company account that you fund ahead, so the calls go through. Some also offer messages or video on tablets. Ask the jail which company it uses, then set up an account with that provider.

Treat each call as recorded and never discuss the Cass case on it. Read up on jail phone accounts and on email and messages to inmates.

12. Letters to a Cass inmate: which address now?

The Sheriff's page flags an important update to inmate mail, with a new mail policy posted as a PDF on the county site. Read it, or call 903-756-7511, before you mail anything. The long-used address is:

Inmate's full name and inmate ID number
Cass County Jail
P.O. Box 180
Linden, TX 75563

Texas puts no limit on how many letters an inmate receives. Lawyer letters get opened only with the inmate present. Follow the new policy on what may go inside an envelope. More on writing to someone in jail.

↑ Back to the question list

13. Wallet, truck keys, cell phone: how do belongings come back?

Clothes, wallets, phones and keys are bagged and stored at booking. The person gets them back on release. Ask staff whether cash they carried went onto their jail account.

Want to pick up a car key or a phone while they are still inside? Call 903-756-7511 first. Expect to show photo ID. The jail may also ask for the inmate's signed OK naming you. Evidence is different. It stays locked up until a Cass judge or prosecutor says it can go.

↑ Back to the question list

14. Illness, injury or daily pills inside the Hwy 8 jail

Phone Hwy 8 without delay: 903-756-7511. Describe the illness, list each medicine with its dose, and give the doctor's name. A medical emergency goes to a hospital. Ask whether the jail accepts medicine from family or only prescriptions it fills itself.

Worried that care falls short? Texas has a jail regulator, the Commission on Jail Standards, and Cass families may complain there. Go to its jail complaints page, or phone 512-463-5505. The commission inspects every county jail in Texas.

15. Cass County warrants: looking one up and taking care of it

Sheriff's deputies, reached at 903-756-7511, carry out most warrants here. Constables in all four precincts help, and so do Linden and Hughes Springs police. On the web, open the Most Wanted section of the Sheriff's Citizen Connect page, then the Texas 10 Most Wanted fugitives DPS posts. A phone call by name works for everything else, since Texas runs no public warrant database. Fixing a warrant starts with a lawyer. Next, either walk in at the issuing court together, or have the lawyer arrange a fresh date. Warrants out of the 5th District or the County Court at Law trace back to the District Clerk at 604 Highway 8 North, Linden, TX 75563, 903-756-7514.

↑ Back to the question list

16. Next hearing: which Cass courtroom, which day?

The fastest answer comes from a person. Call the District Clerk at 903-756-7514 about a felony, Class A or Class B case, or the County Court at Law coordinator at 903-756-7515. For a ticket, call the JP court printed on it.

Cass posts its felony settings on a 5th District docket page, and misdemeanor settings on a County Court at Law docket page. Our Cass criminal court page lists every courthouse, JP office and step in the case.

↑ Back to the question list

17. Federal arrest: Marshals, the Marshall courthouse, then BOP

A Cass federal case is heard in Marshall, in the Eastern District's Marshall Division. The courthouse sits at 100 East Houston Street, Room 125, Marshall, TX 75670, and the clerk's line is 903-935-2912.

Until sentencing, deputy U.S. marshals hold the person, possibly in a county jail. Their headquarters for the district is in Tyler, at 211 West Ferguson Street, 4th Floor, Tyler, TX 75702, 903-590-1370. Pretrial release is a federal judge's decision. If prosecutors object to release, a detention hearing comes first (18 U.S.C. 3142). Once sentenced, a federal prisoner from Cass turns up on the BOP inmate locator.

↑ Back to the question list

18. ICE detainer: how does someone go from Hwy 8 to immigration custody?

  1. ICE sends the Hwy 8 jail its detainer paperwork, Form I-247A.
  2. Release day comes, and the Hwy 8 jail keeps the person for up to 48 hours after they would otherwise be released (8 CFR 287.7(d)).
  3. ICE officers pick them up, usually for a detention center.
  4. Search the ICE Online Detainee Locator using an A-number. No A-number? Use name plus birth country.
  5. Still stuck? Call ICE's Dallas Field Office at 972-367-2200 and ask which office holds the case. The office is at 8101 N. Stemmons Freeway, Dallas, TX 75247.

In Texas, county jails must honor detainers (Crim. Proc. Code art. 2A.060). Proof of citizenship or of lawful presence ends one. Sheriffs who operate jails also face a 2025 duty to request 287(g) agreements. For where Cass stands, phone the Sheriff's Office.

↑ Back to the question list

19. Moved to TDCJ: tracking a state prisoner

Once a Cass judge imposes prison or state jail time, the wait on Hwy 8 lasts until transfer. The receiving agency is TDCJ (Texas Department of Criminal Justice). Its intake staff process each arrival and choose a unit. Then try the TDCJ inmate search.

Planning visits, letters or deposits at a state unit? Use our Texas state prison page. Victims can reach TDCJ Victim Services at 800-848-4284.

↑ Back to the question list

20. Kids aged 10 to 16: juvenile court, not the adult roster

Texas handles offenses by kids 10 to 16 in juvenile court. Their cases stay off Citizen Connect's adult list. A detention hearing comes within a working day or two, and the child gets a lawyer before it.

Parents should phone the county's juvenile probation office, 903-756-7551. It can explain where their child is and what comes next.

21. Sheriff, city police, constables or DPS: who arrested them in Cass County?

Citizen Connect's Arresting Agency tab sorts bookings by department. Agencies that arrest people in Cass:

  • Sheriff's Office: covers the countryside plus every town lacking a police force. 903-756-7511.
  • Linden Police Department: non-emergency 903-756-5544. After hours, calls go to the Sheriff.
  • Hughes Springs Police Department: 603 East 1st Street, Hughes Springs, TX 75656. Non-emergency 903-639-2621.
  • Atlanta Police Department and Queen City Police Department: both book into the Cass jail. Call the Sheriff's line above to reach them or ask about an arrest.
  • Avinger, Bloomburg, Domino, Douglassville and Marietta: call the Sheriff's Office.
  • Constables: Precinct 1, 903-756-5341. Precinct 2, 903-824-6947. Precinct 3, 605 CR 3433, Queen City, TX 75572. Precinct 4, 903-824-6933.
  • Texas DPS troopers: they patrol the highways and book into the Cass jail. The jail can tell you if DPS made the arrest.
