Hill County, Texas Inmate Search: Locating Someone Booked on Hall Street

Deputies, troopers and town officers from Itasca to Whitney bring adult arrests to the Hill County Jail, 406 Hall Street, Hillsboro, TX 76645. The Sheriff's Office runs that lockup. Below are the lookup steps, then mugshots, charges, lawyers, visits, mail, deposits, property and hearings.

Begin on Texas IVSS-Counties, a no-cost lookup run for the state, which tells you if someone is held in a Texas county jail and can warn you when that changes. A booking from this morning may not appear yet. Also check the official jail search.

Still unsure? Dial the jail at 254-582-5313 and choose the inmate prompt. Spell the full legal name for the Hall Street clerk, then give the birthday. Staff can then cover charges, bail totals and the first court setting. Our bail and release page explains release options.

1. Using IVSS-Counties to find a Hall Street inmate: what are the steps?

IVSS-Counties reaches county jails across Texas, Hall Street included. Steps:

  1. On a phone or laptop, load IVSS-Counties.
  2. Enter a whole name, or only the first few letters of it.
  3. From the results, tap the person you mean.
  4. Decide whether you want custody notices; an account is optional.

Prefer talking to a person? The IVSS phone line, 866-268-8959, never closes and speaks Spanish as well as English. The county jail page still names an older service, but IVSS-Counties has replaced Texas VINE.

2. No match in a Hill County search yet: what's going on?

Usually one of these:

  • Fresh arrest. Paperwork at booking runs behind. Wait a few hours, then search again.
  • Bonded out. A fast release can beat the update.
  • Odd spelling. Enter fewer letters, a former surname or a nickname.
  • Arrested past the county line. Bosque, Johnson or Ellis may be holding them.
  • Federal or ICE custody. Separate lookups for both appear further down.

A call settles it fastest. Hall Street staff at 254-582-5313 know who came in, who left and who was moved. For an arrest inside the county seat, Hillsboro police at 254-582-8406 may also help.

3. One county lockup, three neighbors: where might they be?

Adults arrested in this county go to a single jail: the Hill County Jail, 406 Hall Street, Hillsboro, TX 76645, 254-582-5313. Inside are housing blocks A1 to J2, single cells and a trusty block. In June 2022, the state's jail agency put its capacity at 203.

A stop just outside the county could mean a different jail:

McLennan, Navarro and Limestone counties touch this one too. Each sheriff there runs a jail, so phone that sheriff's office about a local arrest.

4. Are Hill County mugshots or booking photos public?

IVSS-Counties gives custody status but no pictures. For mugshots, send a written Public Information Act request. Mail it to the Sheriff's Office, 406 Hall Street, Hillsboro, TX 76645, or by email to sheriff@co.hill.tx.us. Basic arrest details count as public information that the office must release promptly (GC 552.108). How the office treats photo requests? Phone 254-582-5313.

Private mugshot websites sometimes sell removal. Texas Business and Commerce Code chapter 109 applies to sites whose removal fee is $150 or more. They must correct or delete an inaccurate record free of charge. Posting expunged and nondisclosed records is banned outright. To get ICE photos, file an ICE records request. Federal booking pictures mostly stay private; the Marshals Service sometimes releases one, as for a fugitive.

5. Does IVSS-Counties send word at a release or a transfer?

It will, at no cost. Expect a notice at booking or release, at any new or changed court event, and when custody ends through death, escape or transfer to TDCJ. Registration is private, and the jailed person never finds out.

Sign up through the IVSS-Counties website, whether or not you make a login, or by calling 866-268-8959. If an old county page says VINE, that service is gone; IVSS-Counties took its place.

6. Getting out on bond after a Hall Street booking: a quick overview

Within 48 hours, a magistrate reads the accusation, explains rights and fixes bail (CCP 15.17). Texas allows three routes out: cash posted with the court, a licensed bondsman's surety bond, or a no-cash personal bond. Personal bonds are off-limits for certain violent offenses. Holds placed by ICE, a parole office or another county can still block release.

For each charge's bail figure, phone Hall Street at 254-582-5313. Read about bond types, payment counters and refunds on our local Hall Street bail page.

↑ Back to the question list

7. Which offenses are listed against them, and where is that written?

Phone 254-582-5313 and ask for Booking. They can read each charge, its class and the bail tied to it. After filing, the case papers sit with the District Clerk, home to criminal records of every grade above Class C: 80 North Waco Street, 2nd Floor, Hillsboro, TX 76645, 254-582-4042.

Try the county's online court portal too; the District Clerk's page links to it. Statewide, the free re:SearchTX site needs a login, then shows charging papers and final rulings.

8. Court-paid defense from a Hill County jail cell: how is it requested?

Tell the magistrate at the first hearing. A judge then checks whether money is too tight to hire counsel. For that, the County Court at Law offers an Affidavit of Indigence, a sworn list of income and bills. That court answers at 254-582-4068.

Hiring a private attorney instead stays an option for relatives. How this county picks appointed lawyers is laid out in its written plan, searchable through a state plan finder kept for the Indigent Defense Commission.

9. Hill County jail visiting: which days, how long, what ID?

Visits are in person and grouped by housing block. Some blocks get Monday and Saturday slots; others get Wednesday and Sunday. Each visit runs 30 minutes at most.

  • Arrive 5 or more minutes ahead.
  • Carry photo ID that is current.
  • Two visitors at once, never more.
  • Kids stay beside an adult.

The online schedule is jumbled, so phone 254-582-5313 for the block's exact time before driving to Hall Street. State jail standards call for at least two visits weekly. More on our visitation page.

10. Which deposit site does the jail use for commissary accounts?

For deposits, the county's jail page points families to CSG Pay, its listed payment service for inmate accounts. Allow up to 5 business days for a new account to activate; deposits wait until it does.

Other payment options? Ask Hall Street at 254-582-5313. Funds pay for snacks and hygiene items, as our commissary page explains. General deposit advice sits on our money page.

11. Tablets, calls and messages: what links a family to the cellblock?

People held on Hall Street use tablets. To send funds for tablet use, the county points to a tablet deposit page. For phone call setup and rates, ring 254-582-5313.

Keep the case itself out of every call and message. More on calls is on our phone page, and texts and e-messages are on our messaging page.

12. Letters go to Arkansas? Here is the mailing format

Yes. Personal letters skip Hall Street and go to a scanning center in Jonesboro:

Hill County Jail, TX
Inmate First and Last name
Inmate Number #
P.O. Box 16120
Jonesboro, AR 72410

  • Letters are read on a screen. Originals get destroyed, never sent back.
  • The Jonesboro box refuses legal mail, medical mail, magazines and newspapers. Ask 254-582-5313 where those belong.
  • Packages are turned away.
  • Books: soft covers only, handed in at the Sheriff's Office, and only while the inmate has under 5.

13. Wallet, phone, keys: getting belongings back from the jail

Booking staff bag and store what a person carried in. Before driving over, call 254-582-5313 and ask what hours property is handed out. Also ask if the owner has to sign before a relative can collect.

Carry ID at pickup. Ask how leftover account money gets returned once the person is released.

Report it to Hall Street at 254-582-5313. Name the condition and any medicine plainly.

Unhappy with the care? Use the jail's complaint process first; every jail must tell inmates how it works. Next stop is the Texas Commission on Jail Standards, 512-463-5505.

15. Might a Hill County warrant be pending, and how can families find out?

Deputies with the Sheriff's Office, 254-582-5313, carry out warrants here, as do constables (Precincts 1 to 3 at 254-582-4040, Precinct 4 at 254-337-0245) and town police. To check, phone the Sheriff's Office with a name and birth date, or ask the court that might have issued one. Texas troopers keep a DPS Texas 10 Most Wanted roster of fugitives.

Getting one cleared starts with a defense lawyer. Counsel can arrange for the person to report to the issuing court, or request a fresh setting there. Criminal files are kept by the District Clerk, 80 North Waco Street, 2nd Floor, Hillsboro, TX 76645, 254-582-4042.

16. Hearing calendar: when is the next court appearance?

The District Clerk, 254-582-4042, can look up a setting by name or cause number. The court portal is a second option. Fine-only tickets are set by the four JP offices or a town's municipal court.

Want a heads-up? IVSS-Counties alerts can cover new or moved court events. For each courthouse and JP office, open our court page.

18. Immigration hold placed: how is ICE custody traced?

  1. Paperwork arrives first: ICE's Form I-247A detainer, sent to the Sheriff's jail.
  2. That detainer asks for custody up to 48 hours after they would otherwise be released (8 CFR 287.7(d)).
  3. Texas jails follow detainers by law (CCP 2A.060). Under GC 752.053, from 2017, no Texas city or county may restrict immigration enforcement.
  4. Senate Bill 8 (2025) tells jail-running sheriffs to seek 287(g) agreements, with December 1, 2026 as their deadline. Ask the Sheriff's Office about local plans: 254-582-5313.
  5. Federal immigration officers pick them up for an ICE detention center.

19. Shipped to TDCJ: tracking a state prisoner

A felony sentence means a wait on Hall Street until TDCJ sends for them. Intake staff classify each newcomer, then assign a suitable unit. State jail sentences are done at state jail units, not regular prisons.

Only people currently inside TDCJ appear in the TDCJ inmate search. Surname plus first initial works, and so do TDCJ or SID numbers. Unit mail and visit rules: our Texas prisons page.

↑ Back to the question list

20. Where are kids under 17 taken after an arrest here?

Hall Street holds adults only, so an arrested youth aged 10 to 16 is taken to juvenile detention. From the 17th birthday on, a new arrest lands in adult court (FC 51.02). A parent gets notice right away (FC 52.02). If detention continues, FC 54.01 sets a hearing within two working days, so Monday's arrest is heard by Wednesday.

The Hill County Juvenile Probation Department can say which center has the youth: 401 W. Walnut St., Hillsboro, TX 76645, 254-582-4053 or 254-582-9553.
