With 60 beds the Richmond Juvenile Detention Center is a secure facility that provides space for both male and female juvenile offenders. Most of the residents are pre-dispositional and are pending adjudication, and are being detained at the request of a judge or law enforcement as they are alleged to have committed what for an adult is a felony or misdemeanor, if they are considered to be a danger to themselves or a threat to the community, or if they are unlikely to attend their court date if released, or if they are wanted in another state. Services that are provided during detention meet the physical, emotional, and social needs of the youth and are designed to promote social skills, teach life skills, and provide tools for a successful future. Counseling is provided to all those who will benefit from it, and all students are expected to attend classes each weekday to maintain their education during the school year. They are supervised continuously to maintain the safety of the students and the staff, and each is provided with meals to meet their nutritional needs, recreation both indoors and out, and contact with their parents and guardians. Richmond Juvenile Detention Center Visitation Information

  • Unless otherwise approved by the Detention Center Administration, visitation is limited to parents/legal guardians.
  • All visitors are subject to search, including the use of metal detectors without prior notification.

Visitation hours are as follows:

  • Sunday 12:45 pm to 1:45 pm
  • Wednesday 6:00 pm to 7:15 pm
  • Saturday 2:15 pm to 3:30 pm
  • On Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's Day, visitation hours are 2:15 pm to 3:30 pm

Visitors who fail to adhere to visitation rules, which are provided to parents/legal guardians, could result in the early termination of a visit and/or denial of future visitation privileges.

Visitors are asked to leave any personal belongings such as pocketbooks, cell phones, cameras, tobacco products, lighters, keys, hats and scarves in their personal vehicle.

Appropriate attire and picture identification are required.

Alternate visiting times require administrative approval.

Magazines
News, special interest or sports magazines may also be mailed to an inmate as long as they are shipped directly from the publisher. Any magazines that contain profanity, weapons, pornography or other content that is adult in nature will be confiscated by the jail staff and will NOT be delivered to the inmate.

Books
The Richmond Juvenile Detention Center allows books to be mailed directly to the jail from a reputable source such as AmazonBarnes & Noble or Books-A-Million. You can order them directly from your computer and have them shipped to the inmate at the address noted.
Books must NOT contain images or content that are considered excessively violent, pornographic or obscene. Any book that does not meet the Richmond Juvenile Detention Center standards will be disposed of.
