This page shows you how to use the jail roster, get directions, and access inmate services, including visitation, account deposits, mail, phone calls, voicemail, email and text messaging, tablet rentals, bail bonds, and commissary.

Polk County South Jail Inmate Search
Most criminal defendants in Polk County are entitled to pretrial release on reasonable conditions under the Florida Constitution. The exceptions are capital and life felonies with evident proof, and cases where no conditions would protect the community. People arrested for minor misdemeanors or traffic offenses are often given a notice to appear. For other offenses, the Florida Supreme Court sets minimum bond amounts in a uniform statewide schedule.
To check an inmate’s bail at the Polk County South Jail, call 863-635-2642. You can also review the Florida uniform statewide bond schedule for 2026 to see the minimum bond for the charge. Circuits may set higher amounts, and some serious charges require a first appearance before a judge. The county accepts payment in cash, by surety bond, or by property bond, and release on personal recognizance is also possible.
The Polk County South Jail is licensed for 1600 inmates at any given time, but it often has to make room for many more, especially on weekends. At most city and county jails in Florida, the inmate population turns over like this:
- At least 35-40% turn over monthly
- Another 25-30% turn over every 90 days
- Another 15-20% turn over every six months
- About 8-9% stay between six and twelve months
Inmates held longer than twelve months are usually facing serious charges like rape or murder. Because those cases take time to prepare for trial, offenders arrested in this county remain in custody at one of the Polk County facilities much longer.
Every year, Polk County law enforcement agencies arrest and detain approximately 53,700 offenders.
We’ve also gathered photos of the jail over the years that you can view.
⇓ Learn more ⇓ Show lessAs a secondary jail to the Polk County Central Jail, the Polk County South Jail is staffed around the clock for the safety of the inmates as well as the surrounding community. It offers a safe and secure location for those requiring detention within Polk County.
South County Jail is the Polk County Sheriff’s second jail, at 1103 US Hwy 98 West in Frostproof, FL 33843, on the county’s rural south side. The main phone is (863) 635-6920. Like the Central County Jail in Bartow, it holds adults awaiting trial and people serving county sentences of a year or less; longer sentences are served in state prison. The Sheriff’s Office does not publish capacity or population figures for either jail. Because people can be moved between the two jails, confirm where your loved one is before you do anything else. Search the online jail inquiry or call (863) 292-3400.
No one is booked directly into South County Jail. After an arrest, deputies take the person to the Sheriff’s Processing Center at 7101 De Castro Road in Winter Haven, and after processing they are assigned to Bartow or Frostproof. First appearance must happen within 24 hours of arrest (Florida Rule of Criminal Procedure 3.130). South County Jail has its own courtroom for first appearance hearings, and family members can watch from the lobby any day of the week. Cases are handled by Florida’s Tenth Judicial Circuit.
Florida’s Constitution (Article I, Section 14) gives most defendants a right to pretrial release on reasonable conditions. The main exceptions are capital and life felonies with strong proof, and cases where no conditions would protect the public. Until the first appearance judge sets bond, jail staff use the Florida Supreme Court’s 2026 uniform statewide bond schedule (AOSC25-69, effective January 1–December 31, 2026). It sets minimum amounts, the circuit’s chief judge may raise them locally, and the judge at first appearance can set a different bond. Some charges, such as those covered by sections 903.046 and 907.041, Florida Statutes, mean the person must see a judge before release. For lower-level misdemeanors, a notice to appear is common. To post bond you can pay the full amount or hire a licensed bail bond agent. The state premium is 10% of the bond, according to the Florida Department of Financial Services. Call (863) 298-6200 to ask where and how cash bonds are taken, because the Sheriff’s site does not say.
Visiting works the same way as at Central: remote video only, booked through Smart Communications at smartinmate.com. A 15-minute visit costs $2.55 ($0.17 a minute). You can book up to two weeks out, with 24 hours’ notice for any booking, change or cancellation (by 6:00 p.m. the day before). Visiting windows are 7:30–10:30 a.m., noon–4:00 p.m. and 5:00–10:30 p.m. Each inmate gets one visit a day, the adult account holder must be present if children take part, and visitors must be appropriately dressed. South County Jail’s visitation lines are (863) 635-2642 and (863) 635-6826.
Don’t mail personal letters to Frostproof. Polk County scans general mail through Smart Communications, so address it to Smart Communications – Polk County Jail, with the inmate’s name and ID number, PO Box 9204, Seminole, FL 33775-9129. Only legal mail goes to a jail street address (2390 Bob Phillips Road, Bartow). Access Corrections handles deposits online, by phone at (866) 345-1884, or at the kiosk in the South County Jail lobby, which is open 7:00 a.m.–10:30 p.m. daily and takes cash or cards ($300 daily limit, $4.95 kiosk fee). Family members can also order commissary items through MyCarePack. Phone calls go through Smart Communications at (727) 349-1561, and inmates cannot take incoming calls.
To see whether someone has an open warrant, try the Sheriff’s warrants inquiry or FDLE’s wanted persons database. Some warrants won’t show up in either. Citrus Connection lists service to the Frostproof area, but we could not confirm a bus stop near the jail on US 98, so plan to drive. Nearby, you can fill up at Marathon at 7030 US-27, which is open 24 hours, or Sunoco at 5321 US-27. For food, Frostbite Ice Cream & More at 801 N Scenic Hwy serves burgers and sandwiches, and The Roost at Four Seasons at 5298 US-27 serves breakfast and lunch. Hours change, so check before you go.

Steps to pay bail in Polk County
After an arrest, individuals are brought to Polk County South Jail in Frostproof for processing. Following this, three possible outcomes exist:
1. The individual may be released without posting bail, with a promise to appear in court.
2. The individual could be held in jail until their court date.

- Pay a cash bond in full at the bonding window inside the jail or at the clerk of court, by cash, cashier's check or money order; a lobby kiosk or online bond vendor often takes debit and credit cards for an extra fee, and you should bring the inmate's full name and booking number (the jail can be reached at 863-635-2642).
- Licensed bail bond agents in Polk County are available for assistance.
- Land or a home can often serve as bond collateral: the owner provides a deed and a recent tax or appraisal value showing clear title and equity of at least the bond amount, commonly double, and the court that set bail approves the pledge.
