Vitamins and Detoxing

Vitamins and Detoxing

During your drug days, you probably didn't eat very well. It is important to take care of yourself during detox and withdrawal, and that includes vitamin replacement. Because of the damage you did to your body while using drugs, proper nutrition is essential to rebuilding your health. Check with your doctor to determine if there are any special dietary precautions you should take while detoxing from drugs, and discuss the possibility of taking vitamins, especially a daily multi-vitamin. The United States Department of Agriculture has a site called www.ChooseMyPlate.gov that can help you understand how to eat a balanced diet.

Over-the-Counter Vitamins: Multivitamins are available that are designed for your gender and age bracket. Their recommended dosage is usually one each morning. If you take a multivitamin and it makes your nausea worse, adult gummy vitamins are available, and they are often easier on the stomach. If you choose to take different individual vitamins instead of a multivitamin, it is important that you discuss this with your physician so that you are taking the appropriate amounts, and consider spacing those out throughout the day to avoid taking one handful of pills on a detoxing stomach.

Eat Healthy Foods: Most people take vitamins because they know they don't eat a balanced diet. While detoxing and regaining your pre-drug health, you need to eat live foods not just supplement with vitamins. Be sure you are eating foods rich in vitamins and minerals each day including generous amounts of leafy greens, fresh fruits, dairy products, grains, and protein sources such as fish, poultry, meats and beans. If your detox is causing nausea, consider making some soups rich with vegetables and broths. You can sip soup all day long until you feel well enough to eat small meals. Fresh fruit smoothies made in a blender are also a good snack that can be sipped slowly throughout the day.

Avoid Alcohol: As an addict, you should not be drinking anyway, but if you need an added incentive, you should know that alcohol consumption depletes the body of vitamins and nutrients including: B1, B2, B3, B6, B12, folic acid, vitamin C, potassium, calcium and iron.

Small Frequent Meals: Eating small snacks or small meals five times a day will help avoid nausea while you are detoxing. Also, small healthy snacks every few hours stabilize your blood sugar. This can help with mood swings and irritability, which are typical side effects of withdrawal.
