The Dale County Jail is licensed to hold 116 inmates, though it frequently has to make room for many more, especially on weekends. Most city and county jails see a monthly turnover of at least 40% of inmates, another 30% every 90 days, and another 20% every six months. About 8-9% stay incarcerated between six and twelve months. Offenders who remain longer than a year are usually facing serious charges such as rape or murder. Since those cases take longer to prepare for trial, offenders arrested in Dale County remain in custody at the Dale County facility much longer.
Dale County law enforcement agencies arrest and detain approximately 2,320 offenders per year.
Dale County’s jail sits at 124 Adams Street in Ozark. The Dale County Sheriff’s Office built the 116-bed, medium-security facility in 1988. It books arrests from Ozark, Daleville, Level Plains, Midland City and the rest of the county, and it holds men and women awaiting trial, people serving county sentences, and state inmates waiting for transfer to ADOC. The jail answers at (334) 774-5402. The sheriff’s current inmate roster is on their app at https://apps.apple.com/us/app/dale-county-sheriffs-office/id6746731386, and VINELink also tracks custody.
The in-person visiting schedule is unusually strict, so read it before planning a trip. Visits happen on Sundays only. Men’s visits run in 30-minute slots from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m., women visit from 2:30 to 3 p.m., and trusties from 3 to 3:30 p.m. Each inmate gets one visit a week with no more than two guests, and every visitor must already be on that inmate’s list. Children are not allowed. A new arrival isn’t eligible until they have been in custody for 72 hours, and anyone on lockdown loses that week’s visit. Bring a government photo ID and dress modestly. The jail asks families to call ahead to confirm the schedule. No public bus serves Ozark, so most visitors drive. Inland (763 E. Broad Street) and Fast Trip (1233 S. Union Avenue) are nearby for fuel, and Dairy King (964 E. Broad Street) and Crowe’s Chicken (1164 E. Andrews Avenue) are good for a quick meal.
A new arrest leads to a first appearance before a judge within 72 hours under Alabama Rule of Criminal Procedure 4.3. Dale County shares the 33rd Judicial Circuit with Geneva County. Bail is a constitutional right for most people charged in Alabama. The exceptions are capital cases with evident proof or a great presumption of guilt, and, after a detention hearing under Aniah’s Law (2022), charges of murder; first-degree kidnapping, rape, sodomy, sexual torture, domestic violence, human trafficking, burglary, arson or robbery; aggravated child abuse and certain crimes against children; and terrorism. Since voters passed Amendment 1 in May 2026 by 81.6%, solicitation, attempt or conspiracy to commit murder and shooting into an occupied building or vehicle are on the list as well. The Rule 7.2 schedule ($10,000–$60,000 for a Class A felony, $5,000–$30,000 for Class B, $300–$6,000 for a Class A misdemeanor, $1,000–$7,500 for DUI) is only a starting point. A judge may release someone on personal recognizance or an unsecured bond, or require a secured bond paid in cash, backed by property in the county, or posted by a licensed bail bondsman. Call the jail for amounts. If you suspect a warrant, check Alacourt and call the sheriff’s office or an attorney before you turn yourself in.
Money for commissary goes through CorrectPay (VendEngine): online, at the kiosk, through the app, or by phone at (855) 836-3364. Kellwell fills weekly commissary orders. Phone calls run through IC Solutions. Set up an account at (888) 506-8407; calls cost about $0.21 a minute.

Photos must not be Polaroids, and books, newspapers and magazines must be new and mailed by the publisher, with no more than three books at a time and no hardcovers. The jail has a zero-tolerance policy for mail violations.
