The Houston County Jail has a licensed capacity of 400 inmates, yet it is often forced to house many more, especially over the weekend. Most city and county jails see at least 40% of their inmates turn over monthly, another 30% every 90 days, another 20% every six months, and about 8-9% remain between six and twelve months. Stays of more than a year usually involve serious charges such as rape or murder, and because preparing those cases for trial takes time, offenders arrested in Houston County can remain in the Houston County facility far longer.

The Houston County Jail, at 901 East Main Street in Dothan, is where anyone arrested in Houston County on a misdemeanor or felony is booked. The Houston County Sheriff’s Office runs this medium-security jail, which dates to the mid-1970s. It holds men and women awaiting trial or sentencing and people serving county sentences of less than a year; those sentenced to longer terms move on to the state prison system. Houston and Henry counties make up the 20th Judicial Circuit. Alabama Rule of Criminal Procedure 4.3 requires that an arrested person be taken before a judge without unnecessary delay and within 72 hours. Under the Alabama Constitution, most defendants are entitled to bail. A judge may deny it in a capital case when the proof is evident or the presumption great, or, under Aniah’s Law (2022), after a pretrial detention hearing on charges such as murder, first-degree kidnapping, rape, sodomy, sexual torture, domestic violence, human trafficking, burglary, arson, robbery, aggravated child abuse, and terrorism. Amendment 1, passed with 81.6% of the vote in May 2026, added solicitation, attempt, or conspiracy to commit murder and shooting into an occupied building or vehicle. Rule 7.2’s recommended bail schedule runs from $300–$6,000 for a Class A misdemeanor to $10,000–$60,000 for a Class A felony, with $1,000–$7,500 for DUI, though judges may depart from it. Release options include personal recognizance, an unsecured appearance bond, or a secured bond in cash, property, or through a professional bail bond company. Personal checks are not accepted; call the jail for the bond amount and payment options.
Visiting starts with a list. Within 30 days of booking, each person fills out a visitor list of up to eight people, and the lists can be updated in January and July. Face-to-face visits happen on designated weekends: one 30-minute visit, no more than two people including children, and it must be booked by calling (334) 712-0762 no later than 3 p.m. the Friday before. There are no walk-ins. Visitors 16 and older need a current government-issued photo ID; younger children need a Social Security card or birth certificate and may never be left alone in the lobby. Dress modestly and leave phones and electronics behind, since a rule violation can bring at least a 90-day visitation ban. Dothan has no fixed-route city bus. The Wiregrass Transit Authority runs Dial-A-Ride service weekdays from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. for $3 inside city limits; book at least one business day ahead at (334) 836-5555. Most visitors drive. For gas, there is Fast Stop at 617 N Oates St and Marathon at 2808 E Main St. Food is close at American Deli, 386 N Oates St, and Chick-fil-A, 1905 E Main St.

• Valid picture identification (e.g., driver's license, State I.D., or Military I.D. with picture) is required of all visitors, with the exception of children under the age of 17.
• Visitors under the age of 17 must be accompanied and supervised by an authorized adult visitor.
• Visitors who 'arrive' after the scheduled start time may not be allowed to visit.
• Clothing must cover all private/sensitive body areas.
• The visitation schedule may be canceled or altered on holidays or for safety/security reasons.
• Houston County Jail can disconnect, deny, change, or cancel a visit at any time.
• Internet connectivity issues during offsite visits will NOT be refunded.

How do I Mail an Inmate in the Houston County Jail, and what can I send them?
All incoming personal inmate mail will be sent in on a single sheet of 8 ½ X 11 card stock which will be folded in half and taped on both edges and the top.
Nothing may be inserted in the folded card stock and the edges and the top cannot be completely sealed.
No hand-delivered mail or packages will be accepted.
Only letters hand-written in ink or typed will be accepted, nothing in crayon or non-ink substances.
