About the Faulkner County Detention Center Unit 1

The Faulkner County Detention Center Unit 1 is made up of two jails; Unit 1, which is a 100+ bed maximum security unit, and Unit 2, which is for general population inmates. Combined the two units of Faulkner County Detention Center Unit 1 have beds for 462 inmates, and even with that they are overcrowded.

For several years the Sheriff has been trying to get the county commissioners to agree to building a third jail, one that can eventually replace the older Unit 1, but at this stage it's still just talk. Unit 1 was originally built in 1991 and remodeled in 2002, but nothing has been done since then. It has serious roof leaks and plumbing issues that they continuously have to patch up.

Prior to the construction of the Faulkner County Detention Center Unit 1, the county used the old jail next to the courthouse on Locust Street, that has now been turned into the Faulkner County Museum. It was built in 1896.

Unit One is the maximum-security building of the Faulkner County Detention Center, which is this jail, is located at 801 Locust Street in downtown Conway, next to the sheriff’s administrative office. Run by the Faulkner County Sheriff’s Office, it holds up to 118 adult men who need closer supervision; its direct line is (501) 450-4995, or call (501) 450-4914 and press 3. Nobody is booked here – arrests are processed at Unit Two on South German Lane – so a person usually reaches Unit One only after being classified.

Both units appear on the same sheriff’s roster, and the rules are shared: video-only visits scheduled through JailATM, phones through Correct Solutions Group, commissary money through Access Corrections, and personal mail sent to Jail ATM.com – Faulkner County Jail, Inmate ID#, Inmate Full Name, 500 Amity Rd, Ste 5B PMB 53, Conway, AR 72032. Legal mail goes to 801 Locust St., Conway, AR 72034. Cash deposits and property pickup are handled at Unit Two, but proof-of-incarceration letters are issued at Unit One for $2, cash only.

The first-appearance, bail and bond rules described for Unit Two apply here as well: a judge sees the person without unnecessary delay, generally within 48 hours (Rule 8.1), and a bondsman’s premium is 10% of the bond, rounded up to the nearest $5 (Ark. Code §17-19-301). No public bus serves the jail. Downtown, the Shell at 375 E. Oak St. and Maverik at 508 Oak St. sell fuel, and Whataburger at 813 E. Oak St. and Raising Cane’s at 916 E. Oak St. are a short drive away.
