Every Florida county, including Seminole County, follows the same basic bail rules. Most defendants have a constitutional right to pretrial release on reasonable conditions, except those charged with capital or life felonies when the proof is evident, or those no conditions could safely release. Many minor misdemeanors and traffic offenses end with a notice to appear. Bond amounts for other charges come from a uniform statewide bond schedule set by the Florida Supreme Court.

The jail can tell you an inmate’s bail if you call the John E. Polk Correctional Facility at 407-665-1200. You can also look at the Florida uniform statewide bond schedule for 2026, which sets minimum bond amounts statewide. Local circuits can raise them, and certain serious charges require a judge’s review first. The county accepts cash, a surety bond, or a property bond, or can release an offender on personal recognizance.

By the numbers, the John E. Polk Correctional Facility:

  • Is licensed for 1396 inmates at any given time
  • Often has to make room for many more, especially on weekends

At most city and county jails in Florida, at least 35-40% of inmates turn over monthly, another 25-30% every 90 days, and another 15-20% every six months, while about 8-9% stay six to twelve months. Inmates held longer than twelve months are usually facing serious charges like rape or murder. Because those cases take longer to prepare for trial, offenders arrested in this county remain in custody at one of the Seminole County facilities much longer.

Each year, Seminole County law enforcement agencies arrest and detain approximately 31,580 offenders.

Take a look at our photo gallery of the jail, collected over the years.

With a design capacity of 1396 inmates, the functional capacity is 1,000 at John E. Polk Correctional Facility in Seminole County.

Throughout each year it sees an average of more than 16,000 inmates and each is provided with a full intake process and classification to ensure they are able to receive the medical and mental health they need.

During the booking process inmates will have time to their attorney or family, to alert them to where they are, and family can call the facility at 407-665-1200 to determine if their loved one is in the building and what the bail and visiting requirements are.

The John E. Polk Correctional Facility is Seminole County’s jail. The Seminole County Sheriff’s Office runs it at 211 Eslinger Way, Sanford, FL 32773, on the same complex as the Sheriff’s headquarters at 100 Eslinger Way. The jail’s number is (407) 665-1200, and the Sheriff’s main line is (407) 665-6650. Like other Florida county jails, it holds adults awaiting trial on Seminole County charges and people serving county sentences of a year or less. People sentenced to more than a year go to the Florida Department of Corrections. The Sheriff’s Office doesn’t publish current capacity and population figures anywhere we could reach, so call if you need them.

After an arrest anywhere in the county, the person is brought to the John E. Polk facility for booking. If they aren’t released, Florida Rule 3.130 requires a first appearance before a judge within 24 hours. Seminole County belongs to the Eighteenth Judicial Circuit, which it shares with Brevard County. The Sheriff’s Office posts booking information and photos for people held at John E. Polk on its website, seminolesheriff.org, and uploads a daily booking report around 8 a.m. each weekday. If you can’t find someone online, call the jail.

Bail works the same way across Florida. Article I, Section 14 of the state constitution entitles most people to pretrial release on reasonable conditions. The exceptions are capital or life felonies with strong proof, and people no conditions could make safe to release. Starting January 1, 2026, the Florida Supreme Court’s uniform bond schedule (AOSC25-69) sets the minimum bond amounts used before first appearance. The Eighteenth Circuit’s chief judge can set higher local amounts, and the judge at first appearance can change a bond either way. Some serious charges can’t be bonded out until a judge sees the person. Minor misdemeanors are often handled with a notice to appear. You can post a cash bond through the jail, or hire a licensed bail bond agent, whose premium must match the rate approved by the state (section 648.33). We couldn’t confirm which payment forms and hours the jail accepts, so call (407) 665-1200 before you go.

Visiting rules, the video visitation vendor, costs and scheduling weren’t available on any Sheriff’s Office page we could reach. The same goes for mail, money deposits and phone service. Call the jail for current visiting hours, ID and dress requirements, and the rules for bringing children before you make the trip. Ask the same call about the mailing address format and how to put money on someone’s account. Many Florida jails now scan personal mail, so it’s worth checking before you send photos or cards.

For warrants, the FDLE wanted persons database covers the whole state. It isn’t complete, though, so a clean search doesn’t prove there’s no warrant. The Sheriff’s Office can confirm at (407) 665-6650.

The jail is just west of U.S. 17-92 (South Orlando Drive) near West Lake Mary Boulevard. LYNX serves Seminole County, but we couldn’t confirm which route stops closest to Eslinger Way. Use the trip planner at golynx.com or call LYNX at (407) 841-5969. Nearby, you can fill up at the Shell at 360 W. Lake Mary Blvd. or the 24-hour RaceTrac at 3760 S. Orlando Dr. For food, the McDonald’s at 3785 S. Orlando Dr. and the Wendy’s at 3717 S. Orlando Dr. are a few minutes’ drive away.

Understanding the booking process at John E. Polk Correctional Facility

After an arrest, individuals are taken to John E. Polk Correctional Facility where they go through booking. This process includes identifying the person, reviewing charges, and determining whether they will be released on their own, eligible for bail, or detained until their court date.

It’s crucial to remain silent after being arrested. Anything said may be used in court, so it’s better to refrain from speaking until consulting with an attorney.

The following steps outline the booking procedure at John E. Polk Correctional Facility:

  • Personal identification verification.
  • Taking photographs (mugshots).
  • Medical and mental health assessment, as well as inquiries about substance use.
  • Possibly collecting DNA samples.
  • Performing a full-body search.
  • Seizing personal belongings for safekeeping.
  • Allowing one phone call.

Booking can take from a short hour to longer periods, especially on busy nights or with uncooperative individuals. For inquiries about posting bond for an arrestee, call the facility at 407-665-1200.

Paying bail for someone in custody in Seminole County

Once someone is booked at John E. Polk Correctional Facility in Sanford after an arrest, there are several outcomes:

1. They may be released without paying bail, agreeing to show up on a scheduled date.
2. They may remain in custody until their court appearance.
3. They can pay a bail or bond for release. Call 407-665-1200 for bail details.

Bail payments can take several forms.

  • The full cash bond is paid at the jail's bonding window or at the clerk of court using cash, a cashier's check or a money order, while many jails add a card option at a lobby kiosk or through an online bond service for a fee; bring the inmate's full name and booking number, and call the jail at 407-665-1200 with questions.
  • A licensed bail bond agent in Seminole County can help cover bail.
  • Many courts take real estate as security for a bond; the property owner must show clear title plus equity at least equal to the bond, often twice it, backed by a deed and a recent tax or appraisal value, and the court that set the bail gives final approval.

For detailed information about the bail process in Seminole County, Florida, see the John E. Polk Correctional Facility Bail FAQ.
