About the Linn County Correctional Center

The Linn County Correctional Center in Iowa has a capacity of 401 inmates. It is the only jail in Linn County and is used to house inmates awaiting trial and serving time for state, county, and municipal offenses, as well as overflow inmates for other jurisdictions and federal prisoners awaiting trial. The center can be contacted by phone at 319-892-6300. The mailing address for legal mail, books, magazines and newspapers is P.O. Box 608, Cedar Rapids, IA 52406, however if you want to send a personal letter, please note the address above. It is for a third party service that scans the mail, then sends it to the inmate digitally. All in all, it's faster and less expensive to use the NCIC instant messaging service (it's like email) to send mail.  It only costs $0.25 per message.

Inmates housed in the Linn County Correctional Center are eligible for two, 20 minute visits per week. Visitation space is limited, so inmates are limited to a combination of 2 adults and 1 child or 1 adult and 2 children. The jail also offers offsite video visitation with NCIC Inmate Communications for a fee. There have been reports of issues at the Linn County Correctional Center in Iowa. In June 2022, an informant suffered a beating at the hands of two men in the facility. The Linn County Correctional Center is a state-mandated jail facility operated by the Linn County Sheriff to confine all inmates arrested in Linn County, as well as federal, state, and out-of-county inmates.

The jail itself is in a great location in that it overlooks a beautiful river in downtown Cedar Rapids, and is connected to the back of the Linn County Courthouse for ease of moving inmates to their court appearances.

Linn County Bail and Bond Information

  • Anyone arrested at night and before 5:00AM, their arraignment in court is scheduled for 10:00 a.m. Monday-Friday and for 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, Sunday and holidays.
  • Friends or family can view the court proceedings at the courthouse Monday through Friday, excluding holidays and in the lobby of the jail on weekends and holidays only.

  • Contact the clerk of court at 319-398-3411 to find out an inmate's court dates in the future.
  • An inmate's bond can be posted at the Clerk of Court during normal business hours or through a bail bondsman.

  • If Clerk of Court is closed, CASH only bond can be brought to the Linn County Correctional Center lobby window.
  • For Arraignment Bond it must be posted at the Jail (lobby window at the jail is closed daily from 3 p.m. - 4 p.m.)

Linn County Correctional Center uses the services of NCIC for remote video visitation.

In other words, you can visit your inmate in jail by using your home computer, as long as it is equipped with a microphone and camera that supports video.

When available, the jail also provides use of ‘video visit kiosks’ in the jail lobby if you do not have a computer at home. These ’on-site’ video visits are FREE.



Costs
NCIC Video Visitation fees are subject to change, but the cost to you is roughly $7.50 ($0.25 per minute) for a 30-minute visit + an additional fee of $2.00 for the connection.

How Do You Deposit Money for an Inmate in the Linn County Correctional Center?

There are three options for putting money on an inmate's books:



Option 1 - Dropping Money at the Jail

  • Bring money to the jail in person. 
  • Bring cash only (change will not be made) to the Linn County Correctional Center lobby window. The lobby window is closed daily from 3 p.m. - 4 p.m.

How do I Mail an Inmate in the Linn County Correctional Center, and what can I send them?

Postcards
The Linn County Correctional Center allows inmates to receive pre-metered postcards like the type purchased from the post office. They may also allow certain photo postcards as long as they have not been tampered with or contain images that may be considered to be obscene or violent in nature. It is best to only use blue or black ink. Always include your name and return address.

Envelopes
The Linn County Correctional Center also allows envelopes to be mailed to inmates.

  • It is best to only use blue or black ink.
  • Postcards and envelopes MUST HAVE the sender's full name and return address on the envelope. 
  • Only mail that is within 8.5 inches wide x 11 inches tall will be accepted.
  • Mail sent to inmates must contain no more than 5 pages.If the envelope contains more than 5 pages, the entire letter will be returned to the sender.
  • All mail that is entered into the system will be scanned front side only. Do not write on the back of the page, as only the front will be scanned and sent to the inmate.
  • Inmates may receive a maximum of 1 photo per mailing. If more than 1 photo is mailed, the entire letter and all of its contents will all be returned to sender, and nothing will be scanned and delivered to the inmate.

Newspapers
Local or national newspapers may also be mailed to the inmate as long as they are mailed directly from the newspaper publisher.

Magazines
News, special interest or sports magazines may also be mailed to an inmate as long as they are shipped directly from the publisher. Any magazines that contain profanity, weapons, pornography or other content that is adult in nature will be confiscated by the jail staff and will NOT be delivered to the inmate.

Books
The Linn County Correctional Center allows books to be mailed directly to the jail from a reputable source such as AmazonBarnes & Noble or Books-A-Million. You can order them directly from your computer and have them shipped to the inmate at the address below.
Books must NOT contain images or content that are considered excessively violent, pornographic or obscene. Any book that does not meet the Linn County Correctional Center standards will be disposed of. No more than three books may be shipped at any one time.
Hard cover books will not be accepted by the jail due to their potential to be used as a weapon.
