1. Is my relative at the Farmington jail?

The sheriff posts a Jail Intakes list of recent bookings, newest first, with the booking date, the person's name, a photo, and a link to the booking sheet. A separate Jail Releases list shows release dates and times by day. Neither page is a full list of everyone held now, so phone 207-778-3032 to confirm. Call the jail for more information about charges or a bail amount.

↑ Back to the question list

2. What is on the booking sheet?

The Franklin jail posts a booking sheet for each intake. Click a name on the intakes list to open the sheet. It usually shows the booking date, the arresting agency, and the charges written at intake. Charges on that sheet are what officers listed at intake. The district attorney may file something different in court later.

↑ Back to the question list

3. How do I read the Jail Releases list?

Franklin's jail posts a daily releases list. Pick a day, and the list shows who left that day and at what time. It is handy when someone says they were let go but you have not heard from them. If a name is missing for the day you expect, a transfer elsewhere or a longer stay is possible, so phone County Way. Releases on a weekend may post a little later than weekday ones.

↑ Back to the question list

4. Are mugshots shared?

The Jail Intakes list shows mugshots; click a photo to open it. Reporters wanting a different copy can call the Sheriff's Office at 207-778-2680. For people in immigration custody, use the ICE records request page. Federal detainee photos are not public, except where the U.S. Marshals Service chooses to release one.

↑ Back to the question list

5. The name dropped off the intakes list. Were they freed?

Not always. Farmington's intakes list is short-term. The intakes list only covers recent bookings, so older entries roll off even while the person is still inside. Check the Jail Releases list for the dates you care about. If the name is on neither, phone County Way with a birth date ready.

↑ Back to the question list

6. How does bail get set in Farmington?

Bail for the Farmington jail is posted at 121 County Way. After hours, a bail commissioner decides; during the court day a judge does. Maine caps the commissioner's fee at $60 in 15 M.R.S. §1023. Judges must look first at release with no cash under 15 M.R.S. §1026. Our bail page covers how to post the money and the rules after release.

7. Might the person be wanted on a Franklin warrant?

Franklin County deputies serve warrants here; ask the Sheriff's Office in Farmington at 207-778-2680. Maine has no public warrant search, but the court dockets explained on the electronic records page show missed hearings. Clearing it means reporting with your attorney to the Franklin County Detention Center, 121 County Way, or phoning the clerk at 129 Main St. (207-778-2119) to see if the hearing can be rescheduled.

↑ Back to the question list

8. Where is the hearing?

Both courts sit at 129 Main St., Farmington:

Give the clerk the full name and date of birth to get the next date.

↑ Back to the question list

9. Can I sign up for release alerts?

Yes. Releases from the Farmington jail appear in VINE. Search VINELink by name and register a phone or email. VINE then messages you about any release or move out of County Way.

↑ Back to the question list

10. How long does intake take at County Way?

Booking at the Farmington jail takes time. Booking means fingerprints, a photo, a property count, a health screen, and a records check for other warrants. A quiet night may take an hour; a busy one takes longer. The person shows up on the intakes list only after that work is done, so give it time before you worry.

↑ Back to the question list

11. Tips for phoning the Farmington jail

Call 207-778-3032 and give the full legal name and date of birth. Ask whether bail is set, whether a commissioner is coming, and when the first court date is. Officers can confirm custody but will not discuss the evidence. Write down the inmate number if they give it; you will need it for deposits.

↑ Back to the question list

12. Is cash bail allowed for minor crimes?

On minor Franklin charges, the Farmington jail rarely collects money. For most Class E crimes, the lowest level in Maine, cash bail is generally off the table. There are exceptions, such as domestic violence cases, some sex offenses, bail violations, and cases where the person already missed court. A Class E arrest often ends with release on a signed promise the same night.

↑ Back to the question list

13. When does the jail have to wait for a judge?

Some Farmington bookings must wait for a judge on Main Street. A commissioner cannot act on a murder charge. Probation holds and arrests for breaking earlier release terms may also need a judge. In those cases, nobody can post money at County Way until court decides. The clerk on Main Street can tell you the hearing day.

↑ Back to the question list

14. How do I schedule a visit?

Visits must be requested by calling the detention center at 207-778-3032. See our visitation page for general tips.

↑ Back to the question list

15. What mail is not allowed?

The Farmington jail screens all mail. Handmade cards and hand-drawn pictures are not accepted. Address letters with the person's full name and 121 County Way, Farmington, ME 04938, plus your own return address. Our mail page and email page explain more.

↑ Back to the question list

16. How do I add money or phone time?

Money for someone at the Farmington jail goes into an account. Ask the staff which account options are open. See our money page, commissary page, and phone page.

↑ Back to the question list

17. Someone was arrested at a ski area. Where do they go?

Arrests in Carrabassett Valley, Kingfield, or Rangeley still end at the Farmington jail. That can be a long drive on winter roads, so check the intakes list before you leave. Visitors from out of state should bring a government photo ID.

↑ Back to the question list

18. Is free defense help offered in Farmington?

Yes, for those who qualify; the request is made when the case is first called on Main Street. The Maine Commission on Public Defense Services handles court-appointed defense. Family can help by gathering proof of a job, school, or a stable home, which a lawyer can use when asking for easier release terms.

↑ Back to the question list

19. Where can I see the formal charge?

For a Farmington booking, the jail's sheet has the charge. The booking sheet gives the charge at intake. Once prosecutors file, the Farmington file lists the charge and its class. Ask the Main Street clerk, or search re:SearchMaine once you have an account. The police report itself stays with the arresting agency.

↑ Back to the question list

20. Is the intakes list a criminal record?

No. Farmington's intake list covers jail bookings and nothing more. Farmington families can request a statewide record from the State Police SBI. Court records come from re:SearchMaine or the clerk on Main Street.

↑ Back to the question list

21. What happens on release day?

People walk out from 121 County Way. Bring a charged phone and a ride, since taxis are scarce in rural Franklin. The person gets back property taken at booking and any money left on their account. The release form names the coming hearing and every condition, such as no contact or no alcohol, so read it together.

↑ Back to the question list

22. Can the person call or message me?

Yes. Phone accounts and tablet messages are set up through the jail; see our phone page and email page. Treat every call as recorded, and leave case details for the lawyer.

↑ Back to the question list

23. What about minors?

25. Federal prisoner lookup

A federal arrest in Franklin bypasses the Farmington courthouse. Federal defendants awaiting trial are kept for the U.S. Marshals Service, sometimes in a county jail. The Marshals' Maine headquarters is at 156 Federal St., Suite 124, Portland, ME 04101; 207-780-3355, with a second office at 202 Harlow St., Suite 321, Bangor; 207-945-0416. Hearing dates come from the U.S. District Court for the District of Maine clerk: Portland 207-780-3356, Bangor 207-945-0575. After sentencing, search the Federal Bureau of Prisons inmate locator.

↑ Back to the question list

26. ICE detainers

Immigration officers may contact the Farmington jail about a detainee. Under 8 CFR 287.7(d), a Form I-247A detainer from immigration officers seeks custody up to 48 hours after they would otherwise be released. Even so, Maine law at 5 M.R.S. §4763 and §4764 forbids Franklin jailers to keep someone on that request alone and gives the person the right to a copy. Search the ICE detainee locator for a transfer.

↑ Back to the question list

27. Can a Farmington arrest end without booking?

Yes. Deputies, troopers, and town officers regularly issue summonses on lesser charges, so the intake list shows nothing. Look on the paper for the date.

↑ Back to the question list

28. What if a caller wants bail by gift card?

Refuse. Real bail goes only to the commissioner at the County Way jail or the Main Street clerk, with paperwork you can hold. Ring the jail before parting with a dollar.

↑ Back to the question list

29. How can I verify a Farmington hearing date?

Check the release form first, then phone the Main Street clerk. More is in our court guide.

↑ Back to the question list

30. What happens at the first hearing?

Franklin first appearances are in Farmington District Court, often by video from County Way. A judge reads out the accusation, explains rights such as counsel, names counsel when someone cannot afford one, and may revisit bail. Inmates often attend by video from the jail.

↑ Back to the question list

31. Does the Farmington jail give medical care?

↑ Back to the question list

32. No name on the intakes list. Now what?

The Farmington intakes list can miss people. Try alternate spellings, scan the releases list, and remember the person may hold a summons or be in another jail. Then phone the facility.

↑ Back to the question list

Yes. Call the Farmington jail at 207-778-3032 first. Make sure your relative is still inside and someone can take bail or a visit. Have ID and the exact cash.
